A person who was previously healthy suddenly developed a black complexion on his entire face. Believing that a black facial color indicated death, he sought medical attention. A physician palpated his pulse and found no disease, speculating that foul qi might have accumulated in the face and failed to dissipate, causing the blackness, and asked if such an event had occurred. The patient replied: Indeed, while using the toilet, I endured a foul odor for a long time, and this condition appeared after leaving the latrine. The physician said: To eliminate foul odors, nothing is superior to highly fragrant substances. One may burn agarwood (Chenxiang) and sandalwood (Tantan) in a censer, place it inside a bed canopy, and have the patient sit surrounded by quilts within the canopy, ensuring the fragrance does not escape. The patient should close his eyes and sit quietly until the fragrance burns out, then remove the canopy. Following this method, the patient's complexion gradually improved, and after ten days, it returned to normal.
Another patient, aged sixty, was emaciated and weak. His symptoms included intolerance of cold in the head and face, and weak qi preventing him from sitting or walking facing the wind. Various medicines proved ineffective. The physician palpated his pulse, finding them wiry, thin, and faint. Given his advanced age and habit of consuming a vegetarian diet with tea and fruits, the Yangming channel (Stomach Channel of Foot-Yangming) was inherently deficient. The classics state: "When qi is insufficient, the anterior part of the body feels cold and shivering." This resulted from deficiency of Stomach qi, which failed to ascend and nourish the head and face, leading to aversion to wind and cold. Initially, Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Decoction to Regulate the Middle) was used to warm the middle jiao qi, followed by Shengma Jia Fuzi Fang (Cimicifuga Formula with Aconite).
Xian Gu (ST43): Treats facial swelling and eye abscesses; acupuncture with bleeding leads to immediate cure.
Jia Che (ST6): Treats cheek swelling, oral tightness, pain at Jia Che, and inability to chew; both acupuncture and moxibustion are applicable.
He Gu (LI4), Lie Que (LU7), Di Cang (ST4): Treats facial and mandibular swelling and sores.
Select the Stomach Channel: First, the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel, when disturbed, causes aversion to cold and darkening of the face.
Select the Kidney Channel: Second, the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel, when disturbed, causes hunger without desire to eat, and a face as black as lacquered wood; select points based on excess/deficiency and cold/heat patterns.
Shaoyin Collateral: Treats black complexion, teeth appearing long with dirt, abdominal distension, and constipation.
Taiyang Collateral.
Taiyin Collateral: Treats abdominal distension, constipation, and dyspnea; frequent belching and vomiting lead to a red face, while absence of vomiting leads to a black face.
The *Suwen: Liujie Zangxiang Lun* states: The Kidney governs hibernation, is the root of sealing and storing, the residence of essence, and its luster manifests in the hair.
The *Suwen: Wuzang Shengcheng Lun* states: The Kidney corresponds to bone, and its luster manifests in the hair. Excessive consumption of sweet flavors causes bone pain and hair loss. (Note: Sweet flavor benefits the Spleen and overcomes the Kidney; when the Kidney cannot withstand this overcoming, bone pain and hair loss occur.)
The *Suwen: Shanggu Tianzhen Lun* states: At seven years old, a girl's Kidney qi becomes substantial, her teeth change, and her hair grows. At thirty-five (five sevens), the Yangming pulse declines, her face begins to wither, and her hair starts to fall. At eight years old, a boy's Kidney qi becomes substantial, his hair grows, and his teeth change. At forty (five eights), his Kidney qi declines, his hair falls, and his teeth become brittle.
The *Chushi Bingyuan* states: The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel has its luster in the beard. The essence of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney has its luster in the hair. The Chong and Ren vessels are the seas of the twelve channels, known as the Sea of Blood. Their collateral branches ascend to the lips and mouth. If blood is abundant, it nourishes the hair, resulting in beautiful beard and hair. If qi and blood are weak, and the channels are empty and exhausted, they fail to nourish and moisten, resulting in baldness and hair loss.
In the *Lingjing*, the Emperor asked: Do women without beards lack qi and blood? Qibo answered: The Chong and Ren vessels both originate in the uterus, ascend along the interior of the back, and serve as the sea of the collaterals. Those floating externally ascend along the abdomen, meet at the throat, and their collateral branches connect to the lips and mouth. In women, there is surplus qi but deficient blood due to frequent blood loss. (Women menstruate monthly, hence the term "frequent blood loss.") Since the Chong and Ren vessels do not nourish the lips and mouth, beards do not grow. He further stated: Some individuals injure their yin organs, causing yin qi to cease rising and function, yet their beards do not fall off. Eunuchs lose only their beards; why is this? Qibo said: Eunuchs have their Zongjin (genitals) removed, injuring the Chong vessel; blood is lost and not restored, internal skin binding occurs, and the lips and mouth are not nourished, so beards do not grow. What about those who have never been injured nor lost blood, yet do not grow beards? The answer is: This is a congenital insufficiency; the Chong and Ren vessels are not vigorous, the Zongjin does not form properly, there is qi but no blood, the lips and mouth are not nourished, so beards do not grow.
