The *Treatise on the Correspondence of Yin and Yang* states: Heaven has the four seasons, which govern growth, flourishing, harvesting, and storage, thereby generating cold, heat, dryness, dampness, and wind. When the emergence of cold, heat, dryness, dampness, and wind conforms to the proper timing, all things are born; when their emergence does not conform to the proper timing, all things die. Thus it is said: "Born from the four seasons, dying by the four seasons." It also says: Humans have five zang organs, which transform into five qi, thereby generating joy, anger, worry, grief, and fear. When the expression of joy, anger, worry, grief, and fear is moderate and regulated, the nine orifices function normally; when their expression is unregulated, the nine orifices fail. Thus it is said: "The nine orifices are born from the five zang organs, and die by them." The eyes are one of the nine orifices. They possess brightness and vision, capable of encompassing the vastness of mountains and rivers, as well as the minutiae of hairs and grains; they can perceive the height of clouds and the depth of springs and sands. Although they seem infinite yet finite, and the finite cannot truly reach infinity, when these energies gather inward, they fluctuate between opening and closing, movement and stillness, condensing into a subtle point like a pool of clear water. Is this achieved through force? No, this is the natural way of continuous generation.
However, internal injury may result from the seven emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, grief, fear, fright), or external invasion by the five pathogenic factors, irregular eating and drinking, and excessive labor. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian correspond to Wu Earth and Ji Earth, respectively, serving as the source of life's generation. The seven emotions and five pathogens collectively injure these two meridians; irregular diet injures the Stomach, while overexertion injures the Spleen. Once Wu and Ji Earth are diseased, the physical form of natural generation cannot perform its functional role, leading to illness. This is termed disease caused by the seven emotions, five pathogens, overexertion, and dietary irregularities. Symptoms include redness and swelling of the eyeballs with pain, feeling like needle pricks, corresponding to the Taiyang pattern. The eyelids lack strength and tend to droop; the patient dares not gaze for long periods. Prolonged gazing leads to soreness, distension, and the formation of nebulae (corneal opacities). Any resulting depressions may be round, square, long, short, dot-like, thread-like, cone-shaped, or chisel-marked. For cases presenting such signs, Chaihu Fusheng Tang (Bupleurum Decoction for Renewal) is indicated; Huanglian Yanggan Wan (Coptis Pill for Nourishing the Liver) is indicated. For severe eye pain, Danggui Yangrong Tang (Angelica Decoction for Nourishing the Blood and Qi), Zhuyang Huoxue Tang (Decoction for Assisting Yang and Invigorating Blood), Jiadi Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill with Modifications), Jueming Yiyin Wan (Cassia Seed Pill for Nourishing Yin), or Huanglian Yanggan Wan modified with Danggui (Angelica) are indicated; Longnao Huanglian Gao (Camphor and Coptis Ointment) is also indicated. All the aforementioned formulas consist primarily of herbs that ascend and generate Yang Qi. Those containing Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) are used to eliminate the five pathogens. Biyun San (Green Cloud Powder) may also be used concurrently. One must strictly avoid agents containing Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus). Violation of these prohibitions will exacerbate the condition.
