Night crying is divided into two syndromes: Yin and Yang. The Yin syndrome is due to coldness of the Zang organs. At night, Yin Qi (Yin energy) is abundant, clashing with the internal cold; the Qi of the Zang organs strikes each other, causing pain and crying. The Yang syndrome is due to heat in the Zang organs. At night, Yang Qi is weak; this deficiency interacts with the organ heat, also causing pain and crying.

The *Youyou Xinshu* (New Book for Infants and Children) states: "Bell sounds are loud and resonant; stream waters flow far and long." While in the womb, the fetus receives ample Qi, with Water and Fire mutually supporting, and Heart and Kidney unimpaired. Thus, the voice emitted is clear, loud, and resonant. This is because the root is deep and strong, and the innate constitution is full, which is the natural principle. If a newborn cries but produces no sound, or has short, hiccup-like sounds, indicating that upper and lower Qi do not support each other, this is due to insufficient fetal Qi and an unsteady root. Why use medicine? Even if one prescribes medicine based on speculation, such a child will likely not grow up healthy. Physicians must examine this carefully.
Pediatric Ke Wu (Guest Intrusion) refers to foul and evil pathogenic Qi brought by outsiders invading the infant. Once it affects the person, it is called Ke Wu. Even parents or family members can cause this if they come from afar, have visited temples or places associated with mourning, have been drinking or riding horses, or approach the infant with sweat or foul odors. Once infected, it constitutes Ke Wu. When a child suffers from Ke Wu, the face changes color through five hues, resembling Jing Xian (Startle Epilepsy), but the eyes do not roll upward. There may be vomiting of blue-white foam, panting, abdominal pain, and body twisting/trembling, similar to fright. This occurs because the child's Heart Qi is deficient and Spirit is lacking, making them susceptible to Ke Wu Qi. It must not be treated as Fright (Jing); instead, the Heart Spirit should be tonified, and fear/invasion will naturally subside. When Ke Wu triggers convulsions, the pulse is wiry, rapid, and tense, and the facial color changes. Observe the uvula area in the mouth; if there are small blisters on either side, puncture them immediately with a bamboo splinter or scratch them with fingernails. Prescribe Bixie Zhengqi San (Expel Evil and Rectify Qi Powder) to calm the Spirit, and the condition will resolve spontaneously.
