The *Daozang* (Taoist Canon) contains the *Yuzhou Jing* (Jade Axis Scripture), which discusses how the Qi of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs becomes disharmonious due to the薰灼 (scorching/marring) effects of the Five Flavors (sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, salty). Long-term accumulation of the Six Desires (desires of the six senses) and Seven Emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, grief, fear, fright) generates disease. These diseases internally injure the Zang-Fu organs and externally attack the Nine Orifices (eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, urethra, and anus), leading to illness in the entire skeletal system. Mild cases result in stubborn accumulations or masses; severe cases lead to blindness or disability; even heavier cases result in death. Therefore, Taishang (the Supreme Deity) pities sentient beings and uses the Six-Character Qi Mantra to treat diseases of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs.
The method involves exhaling to discharge toxic gases from the Zang-Fu organs and inhaling to draw in the clear Qi of Heaven and Earth. Small effects are seen within a day, major effects within ten days, and after one year, myriad diseases will not arise, extending life and increasing longevity. This is a treasure for health preservation; do not transmit it to unworthy persons.
There are six characters for exhalation: He (呵), Hu (呼), Si (呬), Xu (嘘), Xi (嘻), and Chui (吹). There is only one character for inhalation. The reason there are six exhalation characters is that "He" treats Heart Qi, "Hu" treats Spleen Qi, "Si" treats Lung Qi, "Xu" treats Liver Qi, "Xi" treats Gallbladder Qi, and "Chui" treats Kidney Qi. These six characters of the Qi Mantra respectively govern the Five Zang and Six Fu organs.
Generally, the Qi of Heaven and Earth consists of six Yang hours from Zi hour to Si hour, and six Yin hours from Wu hour to Hai hour. If practicing during Yang hours, face East. Do not close windows completely, but beware of wind entering. Loosen clothing, sit upright, click teeth thirty-six times to stabilize the mind. First, stir the turbid saliva in the mouth, rinse and refine it two or three hundred times, until it becomes clear water. Then lower the head and swallow to the left, using intention to send it down. Wait until you feel it patting against the abdomen. Then lower the head, open the mouth, and first recite "He" to expel toxic gas from the heart. While reciting, one must not hear the sound of "He" with one's own ears; if heard, the breath becomes coarse and damages Heart Qi. After reciting, raise the head, close the mouth, and slowly inhale the clear Qi of Heaven and Earth through the nose to supplement Heart Qi. While inhaling, one must not hear the sound of inhalation; if heard, the breath becomes weak and also damages Heart Qi. The duration of "He" should be short, while the duration of inhalation should be long, meaning less is expelled and more is absorbed. After inhalation, lower the head again to recite "He," ensuring the ears do not hear the sound. After "He," raise the head and slowly inhale clear Qi through the nose to supplement the Heart, again without hearing the inhalation sound. Repeat this cycle of inhalation and exhalation six times. The toxic gas of the Heart will gradually dissipate, supplemented by the clear Qi of Heaven and Earth, and the Yuan Qi of the Heart will gradually recover.
Next, follow this same pattern to recite "Hu." The ears must not hear the sound of "Hu." Inhale to supplement Spleen Qi; the ears must not hear the inhalation sound. Repeat this six times to scatter Spleen toxicity and supplement Spleen Yuan Qi. Next, recite "Si" to drain Lung toxicity and inhale to supplement Lung Yuan Qi, also repeating six times. Next, recite "Xu" to drain Liver toxicity and inhale to supplement Liver Yuan Qi. Recite "Xi" to drain Gallbladder toxicity and inhale to supplement Gallbladder Yuan Qi. Recite "Chui" to drain Kidney toxicity and inhale to supplement Kidney Yuan Qi. Each of these is performed six times. This is called the "Small Cycle" (Xiao Zhou). "Small Cycle" refers to six cycles of six, totaling thirty-six repetitions. After thirty-six repetitions, the Six Qi circulate fully, the toxic gases of the Zang-Fu organs gradually diminish, the root of the disease is gradually removed, and the Qi of the Gallbladder is gradually restored.
If observing which Zang-Fu organ is diseased, for example, eye disease, recite "Xi" and "Xu" eighteen times each, still supplementing with inhalation each time. In total, this amounts to thirty-six repetitions, which is called the "Medium Cycle" (Zhong Zhou). The "Medium Cycle" is the second set of thirty-six, totaling seventy-two repetitions. Next, repeat the previous method of "He, Hu, Si, Xu, Xi, Chui," each character performed six times. Exhale to drain and inhale to supplement. Practice with greater precision and do not neglect this. This is the third set of thirty-six, called the "Great Cycle" (Da Zhou). In total, this is one hundred and eight repetitions, known as the "Hundred-Eight Mantra" (Bai Ba Jue).
Wu hour belongs to Yin hours. If treating illness, face South. South belongs to Fire, so this can repel Yin toxicity. However, this is not as effective as facing East during the Yang hours between Zi and Si hours. If rising early and facing East, performing six repetitions of each of the six characters constitutes the "Small Cycle," which can also treat eye diseases. All various conditions of the eyes can be eliminated by this mantra alone; the same applies to other diseases. Miraculous! Miraculous! This is the compassionate decree of Taishang. It is briefly seen in the *Yuzhou Zhenjing* (True Scripture of the Jade Axis), but the detailed instructions were received from teacher transmission. If the disease is severe, perform each character fifty times, totaling three hundred repetitions, completing one cycle of the six Zang organs. After rinsing, refining, swallowing saliva, and clicking teeth, repeat the process for another three hundred repetitions. After finishing, rinse, refine, swallow saliva, and click teeth as before. Repeat this entire sequence three times, totaling nine hundred repetitions. No disease will remain unhealed. Keep it secret! Keep it secret! Do not transmit to unworthy persons.
