The upper eyelids show red meridians extending downward to penetrate the pupil. The fontanelle protrudes, and in severe cases, becomes sunken into a pit. The nostrils are black and dry; the abdomen is distended with visible blue veins. The eyes are mostly fixed in a staring gaze, unable to rotate. The fingernails turn cyanotic-black, and the infant suddenly makes sounds resembling those of a crow. The tongue extends and may prolapse from the anus (or refers to flaccid tongue protrusion); the infant gnashes teeth and bites people. Breathing is rapid and labored like a fish opening its mouth, yet crying produces no sound. Once roundworms are expelled, death is certain. Even if medication is administered urgently for rescue, fewer than one in ten survives.
Heart disease manifests as darkening of the pupils; this is Kidney Water overcoming Heart Fire, leading to critical failure on Ren-Gui days (Water days). Liver disease manifests as blackening of the skin; this is Lung Metal overcoming Liver Wood, leading to critical failure on Geng-Xin days (Metal days). Spleen disease manifests as bluish lips; this is Liver Wood overcoming Spleen Earth, leading to critical failure on Jia-Yi days (Wood days). Lung disease manifests as swollen cheeks and reddened eyes; this is Heart Fire overcoming Lung Metal, leading to critical failure on Bing-Ding days (Fire days). Kidney disease manifests as facial edema and yellowish lips; this is Spleen Earth overcoming Kidney Water, leading to critical failure on Wu-Ji days (Earth days).
Chao Yuanfang stated: When a child is in the womb, if the mother consumes heat-toxic substances or takes heat-inducing medicines, the infant will be born with body heat, ruddy complexion, closed eyelids, hot mouth, excessive phlegm, panting and urgency, constipation, and scanty, painful urination. This is mostly due to heat accumulation in the fetus, or misadministration of warm tonics, causing heat to accumulate internally and steaming the fetal qi, thus producing this syndrome. If left untreated for a long time, it will give rise to conditions such as thrush (white plaques on oral mucosa), double tongue (swelling under the tongue resembling a second tongue), purple-red dan tumors (skin redness like cinnabar), and acute convulsive wind spasms, all originating from fetal heat.
For infants suffering from fetal heat syndrome, one should first administer Mutong San decoction to the nursing mother so that the medicinal properties pass through the breast milk for the infant to drink. This unblocks Heart Qi and resolves vexatious heat. One must not seek rapid effects. As the nursing mother takes the medicine, the heat will gradually dissipate, with almost no chance of failure. If cold-natured drugs are used to attack the infant directly, vomiting will inevitably occur, leading to major complications. The nursing mother must still avoid spicy, pungent, alcoholic, wheat-based foods, and rich flavors, so that recovery can be easily achieved.
Mutong Decoction: Treats fetal heat in infants, various heat syndromes causing closure and stagnation of the intestines and bowels, as well as sores, toxins, dan spots. Taken by both mother and child.
