The body is flaccid, the genitals are atrophied, and the four sutures of the skull are split; the umbilicus is small or protruding, and the flesh does not retract.
Hair is sparse and brittle, the cry is short, and blue veins are visible all over the body; such individuals will not live to an old age.
If the calcaneus (heel bone) and patella (kneecap) bones fail to develop properly, even if the child can squat, walk, or stand, death will occur quickly.
A dark-colored and mature-looking umbilicus indicates a child who will enjoy longevity.
When infants suffer from diseases that cause concern, if there is still a pulse at Taichong (LR3), the Shen Qi (Spiritual Energy) has not dissipated, the fontanelle has not sunken, and the colors of the Three Passes (Wind, Qi, Life) have not turned dark, treatment efforts may still be effective.
However, the essence of the Zang and Fu organs flows upward into the eyes, allowing diagnosis through observation (Wang Zhen). One should first verify based on the integrity of the Shen Qi in the eyes. If the eyes possess Shen Qi, death is unlikely. If the eyes lack Shen Qi, death is certain.
The Heart orifice connects with the tongue: The Heart is a Zang organ, and the Small Intestine is its corresponding Fu organ. The color associated with the Heart is Red, governing the three months of Summer. The flavor is Bitter, the fluid is Sweat, it governs Blood, the vocalization is Speech, and the breath sound is "He" (exhaling). Excess Heart Qi leads to laughter, while deficiency leads to sorrow. *Qianjin Fang* states: Heart Qi excess results in incessant laughter; deficiency results in unceasing grief.
The Liver orifice connects with the two eyes: The Liver is a Zang organ, and the Gallbladder is its corresponding Fu organ. Its color is Green, flourishing during the three months of Spring. The flavor is Sour, the fluid is Tears, it governs Sinews, and the vocalization is Weeping. Liver Qi produces the sound "Xu"; excess Liver Qi leads to anger, while deficiency leads to sadness. *Qianjin Fang*: Anger indicates excess, sadness indicates deficiency.
The Spleen orifice connects with the lips and mouth: The Spleen is a Zang organ, and the Stomach is its corresponding Fu organ. Its color is Yellow, flourishing during the four seasonal months (the last month of each season). The flavor is Sweet, the fluid is Saliva, it governs Muscles, the vocalization is Singing, and the breath sound is "Hu" (exhaling). Excess Spleen Qi leads to abdominal fullness, while deficiency leads to shortness of breath.
The Lung orifice connects with the nostrils: The Lung is a Zang organ, and the Large Intestine is its corresponding Fu organ. Its color is White, flourishing during the three months of Autumn. The flavor is Pungent, the fluid is Nasal Mucus, it internally governs Qi and externally governs the Skin and Hair. The vocalization is Crying, the breath sound is "Shen" (smiling/sneering); excess Lung Qi leads to panting, while deficiency leads to sighing.
The Kidney orifice connects with the two ears: The Kidney is a Zang organ, and the Bladder is its corresponding Fu organ. Its color is Black, flourishing during the three months of Winter. The flavor is Salty, the fluid is Spittle, it governs Bones, the vocalization is Groaning, and the breath sound is "Chui" (blowing). Excess Kidney Qi leads to diarrhea, while deficiency leads to Jue Ni (Cold Extremities/Reversal).
Joy belongs to the Heart. Consuming milk and food after excessive joy damages the Heart. Qian Yi stated: The Heart governs Fright. Fright refers to Epilepsy. *Su Wen* states: Violent anger injures Yin, violent joy injures Yang. Sun Simiao stated: Injury to Yin leads to diarrhea; injury to Yang leads to fright.
