According to the *Bencao* (Materia Medica): If a physician or acupuncturist breaks a needle inside the flesh and it cannot be removed, apply the liver and brain of a male rat (Marmota bobak) to the affected area. Additionally, Ivory (Elephantis Dentis) is indicated for needles or foreign objects embedded in the flesh; scrape off shavings, grind them finely, mix with water to form a paste, and apply to the site, causing the object to emerge immediately. The *Zhouhou Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up My Sleeve) states: For a broken needle embedded in the flesh, apply a paste made from Ivory shavings mixed with water; the needle will emerge immediately.
The Yongzhen Ointment (Needle-Emerging Ointment) from *Yixue Baojian*: Used when a needle enters the flesh and the arrowhead remains embedded and unextractable. Ingredients include: ten rat feces heads, forty-nine mole crickets (Gryllidae), ten ground beetles (Coptotermes formosanus or similar earth-boring insects), dried blister beetles (Mylabris), maggots from horse meat, and maggots from soy sauce, all roasted dry; plus one tael each of dung beetles (Scarabaeus sacer), croton seeds (Crotonis Tiglii Fructus), realgar (Arsenici Sulfatum), nansha (Nao Sha), prunella vulgaris (Prunellae Spica), magnetite (Magnetitum), red lead (Lithargyrum), sappan wood (Sappan Lignum), and wolfberry root bark (Lycii Cortex), along with three taels of petroleum ether (Shinao Oil) and three sheng of juice from mugwort ash. First, boil the ash juice and petroleum ether over alternating mild and strong heat until an ointment forms. Then add the other herbs, stir evenly, and store in a porcelain vessel. When needed, apply the ointment according to the size of the wound; after some time, the needle will naturally emerge.
Shensheng Ointment (Divine Holy Ointment): Used when a needle penetrates the skin. Use an unspecified amount of axle grease (Che Zhi), melt into an ointment consistency, spread evenly on paper to the size of a coin, and apply to the affected area. Change every two days. After three to five applications, the needle will self-extract with great efficacy.
Wuling Powder (Crow Feather Powder): Used when an iron needle enters the skin. Take three to five crow feathers (Corvidae Pluma), roast until charred, and grind into powder. Mix with good vinegar to form a paste, apply to the wound, and cover with paper. After one or two treatments, the needle will self-extract. Alternatively, use a strong magnet to attract the needle embedded in the flesh, causing it to emerge.
The Yellow Emperor asked: "For kings and nobles, rulers who consume rich foods, whose bodies are tender and fragile, with weak muscles but vigorous and slippery qi and blood, how should the depth, speed, and quantity of needling be determined?" Qibo replied: "Those who consume rich pastries and meats (Gaoliang) cannot be treated the same as those who consume coarse grains and beans (Huoshu). If the qi is slippery, withdraw the needle quickly; if the qi is stagnant, withdraw slowly. If the qi is vigorous, use a small needle and insert shallowly; if the qi is stagnant, use a large needle and insert deeply. Deep insertion requires retaining the needle; shallow insertion requires rapid withdrawal. From this perspective, needling commoners (Buyi) involves deep insertion and retention; needling nobles involves subtle and slow manipulation. This is all due to their vigorous and slippery qi and blood."
