Infantile Pan Chang Qi (Intestinal Colic), when painful, causes the waist to curl, dry crying without tears, and sweating on the forehead; this is due to the Small Intestine being attacked by cold qi. The manifestations include closed mouth, cold feet, and a dry upper lip.
This condition arises from delayed bathing after birth, exposure to wind-cold, or stools that are greenish and unformed. It is appropriate to administer Gouteng Gao (Uncaria Paste), Weixiang San (Wei Xiang Powder), Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill), and Danggui San (Angelica Powder). The nursing mother should take Wuchen Tang (Black Atractylodes and Amber Decoction) or Chenxiang Jiangqi Tang (Aquilaria Descending-Qi Decoction).
Ruxiang San: Treats Pan Chang Qi. Whenever this syndrome occurs, urgently decoct scallion soup to wash the abdomen, rub the navel and abdominal area previously warmed with scallions, and after a while, urine will flow freely and the pain will cease, then administer this medicine.
Frankincense (Ruxiang), Myrrh (Moyao) (equal parts)
Grind into powder, take with Mugwort Water (Muxiang Tang), or boil for a few moments before taking.
Danggui San: For infants who cry at night, it is due to cold causing abdominal pain. If the face is cyanotic, hands and feet are cold, and the infant refuses milk, it is Pan Chang Qi, and this formula is suitable.
Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), White Peony Root (Shaoyao), Ginseng Root (Renshen) (each 1 qian), Roasted Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao) (0.5 qian), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) (each 1 qian)
Grind the above herbs into powder, take 2 qian per dose, decoct in water. If there is heat-pain, incessant crying, red face, scorched lips, and yellow urine, Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill) is suitable, taken with Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction).

Sweat is stored by the Heart; internally it becomes blood, and externally it manifests as sweat. Sweat is essentially the fluid of the Heart. Therefore, when a person's qi and blood are balanced, they are peaceful; when imbalanced, disease occurs.
The Classics state: When Yin is deficient, Yang must converge, leading to fever and spontaneous sweating; when Yang is deficient, Yin must invade, leading to cold extremities (Jue) and spontaneous sweating. All these result from an excess of either Yin or Yang. Infants have tender and weak qi and blood, and their skin pores (Cou Li) are not dense. If dressed too warmly, internal heat generates in the Zang-Fu organs, combusting with the Heart and overcoming the body; fluids cannot be stored internally, but vaporize out through the skin, resulting in sweat. Alternatively, injury by cold or heat disrupts the harmony of Yin and Yang, causing fluid discharge, which also leads to sweating during sleep. Those who are deficient may experience excessive sweating after various illnesses, with weak qi and blood, tidal fever, and spontaneous sweating. Or, after the passage of chills and fever, the body feels cool yet sweats spontaneously; if prolonged, this leads to sallow complexion and emaciation, and if mismanaged, transforms into Bone-steaming Consumption (Gu Zheng Gan Lao). Night sweating (Dao Han) refers to profuse sweating during deep sleep, which stops upon waking and does not recur. This is also due to Heart deficiency; one should astringe Heart qi and nourish Kidney water, so that Yin and Yang harmonize, and Fire and Water ascend and descend properly, causing the sweat to stop naturally. Qian Yi stated: Sweating from the head down to the neck is called Liu Yang Xu Han (Six-Yang Deficiency Sweat), which requires no treatment.
