[Jingmi (Coarse Rice)] Raw Jingmi is cold in nature, while roasted Jingmi is hot. Raw Jingmi does not benefit the Spleen, but overcooked Jingmi is preferable. Consuming it with Xuancao (Cocklebur) may suddenly cause heart pain; consuming it with horse meat may induce chronic diseases.
[Daomi (Rice), also known as Nuomi (Glutinous Rice)] For pregnant women, consuming this with mixed meats is detrimental to the fetus and may cause the fetus to develop Taenia solium larvae (Cestoda), due to its property of causing flaccidity of the sinews. Its nature is cold and it obstructs the flow of Qi in the meridians, leading to weakness and lack of control in the four limbs, dizziness, mental confusion, excessive sleepiness, wind generation, and Qi disturbance. Therefore, it should be consumed in small amounts.
[Shumi (Millet for Wine Making)] It resembles Shumi (Broomcorn Millet) but is smaller, and can also be used to brew wine. It generates wind and should not be eaten frequently.
[Shumi (Broomcorn Millet)] It may trigger latent diseases. Long-term consumption causes the five Zang organs to become dull and induces sleepiness. In children, it leads to inability to walk, relaxation of sinews and bones, and obstruction of blood vessels. White Shumi, if consumed long-term, generates excessive heat and causes irritability. Red Shumi should not be combined with honey. Although it can be made into porridge, it is unsuitable for making rice because the grains stick together and are difficult to digest. If the five types of Shumi are eaten with Kai (Malva verticillata), it forms chronic diseases within the Zang-Fu organs, blocks Qi, but is suitable for patients with Lung disease.
[Raw Rice] Playing with and swallowing raw rice can lead to "Mi Jia" (rice mass/accumulation) over time, muscle fatigue resembling exhaustion, and salivation of clear fluid when rice intake stops.
[Yitang (Malt Sugar)] Consumed in moderation, it strengthens the Stomach; however, excessive consumption triggers Spleen Wind.
[Wheat/Mai] Wheat cultivation spans the seasons, sown in autumn and harvested in summer. In the northwest, where there is much frost and snow, the flour is non-toxic; in the south, with less snow, the flour is considered toxic. Xiaomai (Common Wheat) has a cloying and hot nature, slightly stirring wind Qi. If one feels poisoned after eating noodles, swallowing 3-5 grains of Hanjiao (Zanthoxylum bungeanum) with wine will prevent illness. Damai (Barley) is beneficial for long-term consumption, but raw barley is cold and damaging to the body. Long-term consumption of Mai depletes Kidney essence, so it should not be eaten in excess.
[Qiaomai (Buckwheat)] Widely planted in Western Sichuan, while people in Shandong and Hebei plant it only in the first lunar month. Those who already suffer from Cold Qi should avoid eating it.
[Qiaomai (Buckwheat)] Its nature is cold and difficult to digest. Long-term consumption triggers Head Wind and dizziness. Eating it with pork eight or nine times can cause Hot Wind disease, leading to the loss of eyebrows and beard.
[Suli (Foxtail Millet)] Do not eat Apricot Kernels immediately after consumption, as this causes vomiting and diarrhea.
[Baimi (Barnyard Grass Seed)] Also known as Baizi, it triggers thirty-six types of diseases and is the lowest quality among the Eight Grains. It should not be taken with Chuan Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root).
[Chen Lin Suli (Aged Foxtail Millet) and Chen Baimi (Aged Barnyard Grass Seed)] Both have a cold nature. Frequent consumption leads to spontaneous diarrhea.
[Lvdou (Mung Bean)] When used for treating diseases, the skin should not be removed. Removing the skin reduces the risk of Qi stagnation.
[Chixiaodou (Red Adzuki Bean)] Promotes urination. Long-term consumption weakens deficient individuals, causing them to become dark, thin, and dry, depleting body fluids and causing heaviness. Combining Chixiaodou and Bai Dou (White Beans) with fish leads to Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst syndrome). Chixiaodou is also called Hudou. Combining it with Carp leads to Liver Yellow Jaundice, which develops into Gan Xiao (Dry Wasting-Thirst) after five years.
[Heibai Huanghe Dou (Black, White, Yellow, Brown Beans) and Da Xiao Dou (Large and Small Beans)] Made into Dou Chi (Fermented Soybeans), they are extremely cold. Huang Juan (Soybean Sprouts) and Jiang (Soy Sauce/Paste) are neutral. Excessive consumption causes body heaviness. Those taking Douda Mo (Soybean Powder) must avoid pork. If beans are stir-fried and stored for more than a year, and a child under ten eats them followed by pork, it may eventually cause death due to Qi stagnation.
There was a case of someone who loved eating Tofu and suffered from poisoning that could not be cured. The physician, on his way to treat the patient, encountered a dispute at a tofu-making household. Upon inquiry, he learned that the wife had mistakenly put Laifu Tang (Radish Decoction) into the pot, ruining the Tofu. Understanding this principle, the physician administered medicine with Radish Decoction, and the patient recovered. Laifu refers to Luobo (Radish).
Jiang (Paste/Sauce) should be made from beans. If made from wheat/flour, it consumes medicinal efficacy. Confucius said, "If the sauce is not proper, I do not eat." This is to make the Five Zang organs happy and affectionate. This is also the beginning of peace and joy.
[Zhima (Sesame)] Stir-fried and pressed while hot yields raw oil, which is only suitable for lamps. Only oil obtained by frying/cooking is considered "cooked oil" and edible. Sesame oil triggers cold diseases, lubricates bone marrow, and burdens the Spleen. After overnight storage, it disturbs Qi movement. It is unsuitable for those with dental or Spleen diseases. Old sesame oil used for cooking must be re-boiled daily. Black Sesame, when stir-fried and eaten, does not generate wind diseases. Patients with Wind disorders who eat it daily walk steadily and speak clearly without slurring. This is also known as Huma (Sesame) or Jushengzi. White Sesame lubricates the intestines and stomach, moves Wind Qi, and unblocks blood vessels. Old sesame can trigger Huoluan (Cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea); long-term consumption wastes muscle tissue. Mahren (Sesame Seeds) in excess damages blood vessels, causes Yang deficiency with seminal emission, and triggers Dai Xia Bing (Leukorrhea) in women.
