The horizontal measurements of the chest (Ying) and abdomen are both standardized by measuring horizontally between the nipples as eight Cun. The method for taking acupoints horizontally on the chest and abdomen is entirely based on this standard. For vertical measurements, the distance from below the xiphoid process to the umbilicus is measured as eight Cun, and from the umbilicus to the pubic symphysis (hairline) is measured as five Cun. The distance from Tiantu (CV22) to Shanzhong (CV17) is measured as six Cun and eight Fen; moving downward one Cun and six Fen leads to Zhongting (CV15). The total distance from Tiantu to Zhongting is measured as eight Cun and four Fen. Acupoints on the hands and feet are all measured using the Middle Finger Cun method.
According to the standards of Tongshen Cun (Body Proportion Inch): The circumference of the skull is two Chi and six Cun; the chest circumference is four Chi and five Cun; the waist circumference is four Chi and two Cun. The area covered by hair, from the crown to the nape, measures one Chi and two Cun; from the hairline to the chin measures one Chi. From below the laryngeal prominence to the center of Quepen (LI12) is four Cun; from Quepen to Jiwei (CV15, referred to here as KT/heart pit) is nine Cun. If this measurement exceeds nine Cun, the lungs are large; if less, the lungs are small. From Jiwei to Tianshu (ST25) is eight Cun. If it exceeds, the stomach is large; if insufficient, the stomach is small. From Tianshu to Henggu (pubic symphysis) is six Chi and half a Cun. If it exceeds, the ileum is wide and long; if insufficient, it is short and narrow. The length of Henggu is six Chi and half a Cun. From the upper border of Henggu to the upper border of the medial epicondyle of the femur is one Chi and eight Cun. From the upper border to the lower border of the medial epicondyle is three Chi and half a Cun. From the lower border of the medial epicondyle to the tip of the medial malleolus is one Chi and three Cun; from the tip of the medial malleolus to the ground is three Cun. From the knee to the dorsum pedis connection is one Chi and six Cun; from the dorsum pedis connection to the ground is three Cun. Therefore, if bone circumference is large, the body parts are excessive; if small, they are insufficient. From the shoulder angle to the Zhu Gu (C7 spinous process) is one Chi; the part hidden in the armpit during walking is four Cun; from the armpit to the hypochondrium (costal margin) is one Chi and two Cun; from the hypochondrium to the Bi Shu (greater trochanter) is six Cun; from the Bi Shu to the middle of the knee is one Chi and nine Cun; from the knee to the ankle is one Chi and six Cun; from the lateral malleolus to Jing Gu (fifth metatarsal tuberosity) is three Cun; from Jing Gu to the ground is one Cun. The width behind the ear at Wang Gu is nine Cun; the width in front of the ear at Er Men (TE21) is one Chi and three Cun; the distance between the two zygomatic bones is seven Cun. The width between the two nipples is nine Cun. The width between the two thighs is six Chi and half a Cun. The foot length is one Chi and two Cun, and width is four Chi and half a Cun. From the shoulder to the elbow is one Chi and seven Cun; from the elbow to the wrist is one Chi and two Chi and half a Cun. From the wrist to the proximal phalanx joint of the middle finger is four Cun; to the distal end of the last phalanx is four Cun and half a Cun. From the neck hairline to the spinal bone is two Chi and half a Cun; from the spinal bone to the twenty-one coccygeal vertebrae is three Chi. (Acupoints along the meridians throughout the body can be located according to local proportions, ensuring that lengths and widths meet standards without being too large or too small. Currently, people use the one-Cun measurement of the middle finger for whole-body localization; how can this be called Tongshen Cun? It should be called Tongzhi Cun (Same-Finger Cun). One must select acupoint proportions relative to the specific location on the body, hence it is termed Tongshen Cun.)
