Secret Formula: For treating beating injuries (Zhang Chuang), whether the wound is broken or not, use raw Pinellia Rhizome (Banxia) ground into powder, mixed with Chinese chive juice for topical application. This is effective, stops pain and bleeding, and leaves no scar.
Another Formula: Use only Rhubarb (Dahuang) ground into powder, mixed with egg white for topical application, which will cure the condition.
Erhuang Ointment: A wonderful treatment for beating injuries. It uses Mingchium (Huangdan), Yellow Beeswax (Huangla), and Sesame Oil (Xiangyou). First, take four taels of sesame oil, boil it in an iron spoon until boiling, add one tael of yellow beeswax, continue to melt and lift off the heat, then add Mingchium and stir until it reaches a thin paste consistency. Spread the ointment on oil paper and apply it to the affected area, securing it externally with a cloth bandage. It will heal within three days.
Another Formula: Highly effective for beating injuries. Take one tael of Lead White (Guanfen), one qian of Red Kaolin (Chishizhi), and one fen of Mercury (Shuiyin). Pound them into an ointment in a mortar with sesame oil. Apply the ointment to the wound, cover with oil umbrella paper, and bind firmly for immediate effect.
Another Formula: Prevents scarring from beating injuries and relieves pain. Stir-fry Foxtail Millet (Shumi) until black, grind into powder, and mix with Sesame Oil (Xiangma You) for topical application.
Iron Shirt (Tie Bu Shan): Treats pain from blows. Administer this medicine before being beaten; upon subsequent beating, there will be no sensation of pain. Ingredients include Frankincense (Ruxiang), Myrrh (Moyao), Wumingyi, Natural Copper (Zirantong), Earthworm (Dilong), and Momordica Seed (Mubiezi, shelled). First, quench Natural Copper in vinegar seven times. Grind all ingredients together into powder, and make pills the size of bullets using refined honey. Dissolve one pill in warm wine and swallow. Drink one or two cups of wine just before the incident occurs; regardless of the beating, there will be no pain. Another formula adds Aconite Root (Caowu). The processing method for Caowu is: place it on a heated earthen bed, sprinkle with vinegar to steam, and let it sit for a day before use.
Secular physicians claim that surgery (Waike) is easy to treat, involving merely detoxification and topical applications. They fail to carefully examine the exterior and interior, severity, deficiency and excess, and attack and tonify principles. Thus, they rarely avoid harming patients. Although previous dynasties had books on surgery, they did not explain these concepts deeply and clearly. Since the publication of Xue Xinpu's *Xinfa* and *Fahui*, and Wang Shengzhi's *Lili*, practitioners of surgery have come to understand the root causes, realizing that treatments should proceed from the interior to the exterior, release the exterior and purge the interior, tonify deficiency, and drain excess, each having its own guidelines. However, the differentiation was still not exhaustive. I have collected the essentials of these two masters and appended them to the *Yitong*, so that those practicing this profession may have convenient references for verification.
