In the past, there was a person who had a fondness for eating pig and sheep brains. After consuming them for a year, his hands and feet became weak and flaccid, rendering him unable to walk, eventually leading to paralysis. According to the "Nei Ze" (Inner Regulations) of the *Book of Rites*: "When preparing a young pig, remove its brain; when preparing fish, remove the 'Yi' (referring to the swim bladder or gallbladder); when preparing a turtle, remove the 'Chou' (referring to turtle urine)." Zheng Xuan commented: "These are all detrimental to human health." The *Zuo Zhuan* records: "The Marquis of Jin dreamed that the King of Chu lay upon him and bit his brain. Upon waking, he divined it as an auspicious omen, saying, 'I shall soon soften/subdue him.' Du Yu annotated: 'Brain possesses the property of softening objects. To make human skin soft, one must use pig brain, desiring it to become pliable.' From this, we know that the statements in "Nei Ze" and *Zuo Zhuan* are well substantiated.
A farmer lay on the ground during the summer day. While in a deep sleep, a centipede entered his mouth. Upon waking, he felt a foreign body sensation in his throat, as if obstructed, unable to cough it out or swallow it down. The pain and itching were variable, causing him great suffering. A physician cracked an egg, mixed it with wine, and instructed the patient to drink it in one go. Simultaneously, the patient was given powder of Rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) mixed with sesame oil. Within a short while, the patient defecated the centipede, which was still alive and moving. This occurred because the egg white constricted the centipede's legs, preventing movement, and the purgative facilitated its expulsion through the large intestine. Chickens naturally peck at centipedes; here, the principle of mutual restraint is applied.
A young man from a wealthy family had a chicken bone lodged in his throat. Numerous treatments failed. An old man observed this and said, "I have a technique; I will extract it manually without using medicine." He quickly took fresh cotton wool and white sugar. He wrapped the sugar in the cotton to the size of a plum and instructed the patient to swallow it into the throat, leaving half of the cotton outside. By periodically pulling the cotton with his hand, he waited until the throat became itchy. Suddenly, phlegm and saliva gushed out, and the bone adhered to the cotton and was extracted, resulting in a cure.
Qian Yi (courtesy name Zhongyang) gained fame for his expertise in the *Luxin Jing* (Cranial Swaddling Classic). He treated a puerperal woman who fell ill due to extreme fright. Although her illness subsided, her eyes remained open and could not close, a phenomenon no one could explain. When asked about it, Qian Yi said, "This disease is named Dan Heng (a condition characterized by imbalance of Gallbladder Qi leading to inability to close the eyelids, often caused by fear). Decocting Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) in wine and drinking it until intoxication will cure it. The reason is that the visual system connects internally with the Liver and Gallbladder. Fright causes Qi stagnation, and Gallbladder Qi fails to descend. Semen Pruni Armeniacae can resolve stagnation. Accompanied by wine entering the Gallbladder, once the stagnation is resolved and Gallbladder Qi descends, the eyes can close." Following his advice, the treatment proved effective.
