Pulse Diagnosis
The pulse at the left Cun position is surging and rapid, indicating Heart Fire blazing; the Guan position is wiry and surging, indicating Liver Fire excess; both the right Cun and Guan positions are wiry and surging, indicating Liver Wood carrying the momentum of Ministerial Fire to insult the Metal it cannot overcome (Lung) and control the Earth it overcomes (Spleen).
Treatment
The world believes that eye diseases with pain are mostly caused by Fire-Heat and excessive Blood. I privately believe that although eye diseases are indeed caused by Fire-Heat, if there is no external Wind-Cold closing the exterior, the eyes will not become diseased, and even if they do, the pain will not be severe. Generally, when a person contracts Wind-Cold, the Couli (pores) become closed and dense, preventing Fire-Heat from dissipating outward, so it travels upward to the orifices causing eye disease. Dispersing the external Wind-Cold allows the Fire-Heat to vent, and the pain stops naturally. Formulas such as Xi Gan San (Liver-Washing Powder) use cooling herbs to internally reduce Fire-Heat. Although this is one method of treatment, using it excessively damages the Spleen and Stomach, often leading to anorexia or diarrhea, which becomes difficult to treat. Bloodletting therapy should not be used frequently either, as it injures the root, because the eyes require Blood to see; if Blood is deficient, vision becomes dim. If the dimness is due to Blood deficiency, then Zi Yin Di Huang Wan (Nourishing Yin Rehmannia Pill) and Yang Gan Wan (Nourishing Liver Pill) can be taken.
Appendix: Memorial on Presenting Huan Jing Wan by Taishang Xuan Zhenren
I respectfully submit that medicine possesses the profound wonders of sagehood, divinity, skill, and ingenuity, which people must understand; medicines possess properties of warmth, coolness, cold, and heat, which physicians must distinguish. In ancient times, the Yellow Emperor tasted hundreds of herbs to compose the Ben Cao (Materia Medica), and Shuhe (Wang Shuhe) examined the six pulses to illuminate the source of diseases, thereby supporting the moral order and saving lives, truly having its merits. People in antiquity all reached old age, let alone the most noble in the world being humans, and among humans, the most noble being the eyes. The eyes are the essence of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs, the supreme treasure of the hundred bones and nine orifices, capable of observing all things and seeing clearly in four directions, bright and pure like pearls, containing Heaven and Earth, internally connected to the Liver and Gallbladder, externally corresponding to the pupils. Although the eyes belong to the Liver gate, the orifices reside in the Kidney. The Kidney belongs to North Ren-Gui Water, and the Heart belongs to South Bing-Ding Fire. When Heart and Kidney are not harmonious, Water and Fire battle; during battle, Qi and Blood stagnate and do not disperse, damaging the Gallbladder and weakening the Liver, inevitably resulting in eye pathology. To treat any eye disease, one must first tonify Kidney Yuan, then repair Liver Wood. The Liver is the sprout of the Kidney, and the Kidney is the root of the Liver; repairing the Liver calms the Hun and Shen, while tonifying the Kidney circulates Jing and Po. Once Jing and Po are harmonized, the eyes naturally become clear. It is like planting trees: one must cultivate the roots; strong roots lead to lush branches and leaves, while damaged roots cause flowers and leaves to wither. Furthermore, the black part of the eye (cornea/pupil area) belongs to the Kidney; Kidney deficiency causes tears to flow; the inner canthus connects to the Liver; Liver wind causes constant cold tears; the white part of the eye (sclera) belongs to the Lung; Lung cold causes red vessels to flow into the eyeball; the upper and lower eyelids belong to the Spleen; Spleen wind causes inverted eyelashes; the inner and outer canthi belong to the Heart; Heart heat causes pterygium growth. The five wheels of the eye correspond externally to the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water; and internally to the Five Zang: Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung, Kidney. The five wheels refer to Wind, Flesh, Blood, Qi, Water; the eight corridors refer to Heaven, Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Cloud, Mountain, Lake. If illness occurs, one must investigate the root cause. Do not employ mediocre doctors to perform hooking or cutting surgeries. Your Majesty likes taking alchemical pills, damaging the Spleen and Stomach, worrying and thinking all night, exhausting spirit and energy, or suffering heat in the Gallbladder, cold in the Lung, eating too much of the Five Pungents, indulging excessively in the Seven Emotions, gazing at stars and moon, or approaching fire and smoke, thus causing Heat in the Triple Burner, leading to blindness in both eyes, or tearing upon exposure to wind, or seeing objects as if through smoke, seeing the sky as if covered in frost and snow, viewing the sun as if looking at a lid. The Five Zang are depleted, dreaming of ghostly intercourse at night, seeing chaotic black spots before the eyes, unaware of the white nebula obscuring vision. I deeply pity this. Your Majesty should take heed. Now, according to the Ben Cao, I have prepared an immortal prescription that nourishes nature and calms the spirit, searches out wind and clarifies the eyes, removes Heat and eliminates evil, repairs the Liver and tonifies the Kidney. It can clarify even distant internal cataracts, let alone recent redness and swelling. The prescription consists of twenty-nine ingredients, named Huan Jing Wan (Restore Vision Pill). Its preparation is extraordinary, possessing the functions of Jun (Monarch), Chen (Minister), Zuo (Assistant), and Shi (Envoy); its processing is uncommon, possessing the subtleties of roasting, processing, chopping, and refining. Regardless of age or Yin-Yang constitution, brightness and clarity will be seen immediately. I respectfully wish Your Majesty to cultivate condensed virtue and nurture spirit, residing peacefully in the deepest palace, seeing clearly ten thousand miles away. You certainly do not rely on this medicine, but it can ensure prevention beforehand. I humbly request that it be widely distributed to the common people for trial, and bestowed upon the ministers, who unanimously agree. I am overwhelmed with awe and reverence toward Heaven and the Sage, feeling intensely agitated and fearful. I respectfully record this formula and present it with this memorial.
