In Shanghan disease, after six or seven days, there is fever, slight aversion to cold, vexatious pain in the limbs and joints, slight vomiting, and a sensation of fullness and obstruction under the heart (epigastrium). This is a concurrent disease of Taiyang and Shaoyang, treated with Chaihu Guizhi Tang.
Chaihu (four liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (each one liang half), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (one liang), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (two he half), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) (six pieces).
The above nine herbs are boiled in water and taken orally.

Originally a Taiyang disease, the physician incorrectly used purgation, resulting in abdominal fullness and occasional pain, which belongs to Taiyin disease, primarily treated with Guizhi Jia Shaoyao Tang; for severe solid pain, Guizhi Jia Dahuang Tang is used.

This is Guizhi Tang with Shaoyao increased by three liang; for severe solid pain, Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) is added two liang to the original formula. The decoction method is as before.
