The syndrome of Shanghan (Cold Damage) involves numerous complexities. Since Zhang Zhongjing established therapeutic principles and formulated prescriptions, followed by Wang Shuhe's compilation and countless commentaries, the profound medical theories have been revealed. Subsequent commentators on this work number in the dozens, criticizing and disparaging one another without end. I believe that among these dozens of commentators, Wu Mengzhai's *Shanghan Zhizhang* (Finger-Pointing Guide to Cold Damage) is indeed a swift and convenient approach; although Li Shicai also praised it, its profound and subtle meanings are difficult to thoroughly investigate. Fang Zhongxing rose to author *Shanghan Lun Tiaobian* (Differentiated Analysis of the Treatise on Cold Damage), which truly demonstrates outstanding insight. Cheng Jiaoqian (Cheng Yingmou) merely picked up the crumbs left by Fang, adding only superficial and redundant content. Ke Yunbo (Ke Qin)'s statements, while fluent, are not free from forced interpretations. As for scholars such as Zhang Luyu (Zhang Lu) and Zhou Yuzaï (Zhou Yangjun), their elucidations are each extremely precise and detailed, yet some find them overly complex and sprawling. Only the works of Yu Jiayan (Yu Chang) have become widely popular because they strike a proper balance between brevity and detail, making them accessible to the general ear. However, compared with Mr. You Zaijing's *Shanghan Guan Zhu Ji* (Pearl String Collection on Cold Damage), there is a vast difference.
Take, for instance, the statement in the first chapter: "When cold pathogenic factors are shallow, they only injure the Wei (Defensive) level; when wind pathogenic factors are severe, they extend to the Ying (Nutritive) level. When Wei Qi is excess, wind is difficult to disperse; when Wei Qi is deficient, cold cannot be secured. One should only distinguish between Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) and Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) based on whether the syndrome presents with sweating or not, rather than rigidly adhering to the deficiency or excess of Ying and Wei to differentiate between Shanghan and Fengshan (Wind Strike)." He established seven methods: Zhengzhi Fa (Orthodox Treatment Method), Quanbian Fa (Flexible Treatment Method), Woxuan Fa (Mediating Treatment Method), Jiuni Fa (Rescue from Error Method), Leibing Fa (Similar Disease Differentiation Method), Mingbian Fa (Clear Differentiation Method), and Zazhi Fa (Miscellaneous Treatment Method). The intent behind Zhang Zhongjing's writings becomes as bright as snow and clear as the moon, allowing for immediate understanding—a feat unprecedented in history. Why was his *Jingui Yaolue Xindian* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet: Insights into the Classic) published and included in the *Yuzuan Yizong Jinjian* (Imperially Compiled Golden Mirror of Medicine), while *Shanghan Guan Zhu Ji* has not yet circulated widely? This is truly regrettable.
Regarding those who varied the methods and claimed that ancient and modern times require different approaches, such as Tao Jian'an (Tao Hua) and Gao Gufeng (Gao Shishi), although they have left behind transmitted works generation after generation, none surpass Ge Cunju's (Ge Weicheng) *Buding Shi* (Stone to Mend Heaven). In this book, all exogenous syndromes contracted in the four seasons, whether true Shanghan or similar diseases, are differentiated and treated item by item, each reaching perfection. It can be described as broad yet detailed, and detailed yet concise. After the printing blocks of this book were discarded, no one re-engraved them, and I cannot understand why. I wished to combine and publish the works of Ge Cunju and You Zaijing. One establishes treatment methods based on syndromes, and the other differentiates syndromes based on treatment methods; together they form a complete system, clear as day. I privately believe that for anyone dealing with exogenous syndromes, reading just these two books would allow one to grasp more than half of the subject matter. Alas, my strength did not match my will, and due to procrastination, the engraving was never completed. Now that I am old, I have the ambition but lack the ability. Therefore, I record these few words, hoping that fellow practitioners may share this view.
