When Yang blood moves recklessly, the color of the blood in the gums is yellow like spoiled sauce; when Stomach heat is extremely abundant, the teeth are dry like stone and have a luster. When Kidney Yin blood moves recklessly, the blood lobes in the gums are purple like black lacquer; when Kidney fluid is exhausted, the teeth are withered like bone and lack luster. Even if the teeth suddenly fall out, or if one suffers from "chuan sai ya gan" (cheek-penetrating gum disease), these are all extremely dangerous conditions. At this time, it is urgent to use purgative formulas (Xia Duo Fang) to subdue the fire of Dragon and Lei (Long Men Huo), so as not to let the Kidney fluid be boiled dry, thereby avoiding the exhaustion of Yin from below. Subsequently, use nourishing Yin agents to hope for the flow of essence (Gao) on barren land (Chi Di), preventing the consumption of Stomach fluids which would cause Yang to rebel upwards.
Seasonal epidemic qi does not spread via wind, hence Liezi stated that "wind is the stagnation of the earth." Although this qi resembles stagnant gloomy air, once stirred by wind, it transforms into Yang. Therefore, epidemics belong to Yang pathogens and are hot diseases caused by excessive Yang. Initially affecting the exterior, although chills are present, the origin of the pathogen lies in fire and heat; this is the first reason for applying the Double Resolution method (Shuang Jie Fa), which combines cooling and dispersing properties. As for the cause of chills, it is because wind injures the Wei (Defensive) level and heat injures Qi, causing Wei Qi to be unable to resist and retreat, allowing the pathogen to prevail and generate cold. Yang pathogens move fastest; once invading the Wei level, they follow the movement of Wei Qi and transform into heat within the Wei level. The source of the disease is at the Wei level, initially causing no damage to the original Yin and Ying (Nutritive) levels. However, if it lingers in the Wei level without being expelled, wind dominance leads to tremors/movement, and heat dominance leads to swelling. Thus, Yang hyperactivity consumes Yin, burning and damaging the Ying level. Therefore, dispersing (Shu Da) and nourishing Yin cannot be neglected; this is the second reason why the Double Resolution method should be applied. Furthermore, if at the onset there is mental dullness, faint sand points (Sha Dian), dry heat, and rotting throat, with a fierce onset, failing to clearly identify the syndrome and attempting treatment with small doses is tantamount to indecision and nurturing evil, inevitably leading to major disasters. This is like using a cup of water to extinguish a cartload of firewood—it only increases the flames.
