Remove the rice, add Trichosanthis Radix (Tianhuafen) and Bambusae Caulis in Sterilization (Zhuru), etc., and its therapeutic power will be vastly different. Huang Lianzhong had a great realization, took the medicine, and recovered soon after. This shows that taking medicine should not merely rely on the name of the decoction.
Madam Huang Dingru, aged seventy-seven, suffered from intermittent malaria in late autumn. Each episode worsened; chills were slight, but fever was invariably accompanied by coma and convulsions, with an inability to extend the tongue. After three episodes, everyone considered her condition critical. Wang Mengying examined her: malar flush, drooping eyelids, cold nose, and slight sweating on the forehead and chin. The tongue coating was yellow and greasy, the root purely red, with thirst, profuse phlegm, and no desire for porridge or drinks. The pulse was wiry and rapid, lacking spirit when pressed heavily. The syndrome belonged to latent summerheat complicated by phlegm, with yin deficiency and floating yang. Initially, he prescribed Cistanche Ramul (Rongrong), Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (Biejia), Toosendan Fructus (Lianshi), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu), Zhuru, Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu), Swallow's Nest (Yanwo), and Lotus Rhizome Juice (Ou Zhi). After two doses, the malar flush and chin sweating disappeared. Subsequently, he added Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Bamboo Sap (Zhuli), Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (Xiebai), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), Loquat Leaf (Pipaye), and Inulae Flos (Xuanfu), removing Zhuru and Rongrong. After three doses, the coma and convulsions ceased. He then removed Xiebai and Lianshi, adding Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi) and Tianhuafen. After five days, the malaria subsided. Her diet gradually increased, and she declared recovery. During the height of the malaria's rampant course, Dingru and his brother Shangshui were very worried. They invited several renowned physicians to discuss treatment. Some advocated Ren Shen Bai Hu Tang; others used Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang; some desired large doses of warming tonics; others insisted on modifying Xiao Chai Hu Tang. Fortunately, Mengying firmly refuted these opinions, giving the family confidence. Mr. He Xinzhi agreed with Mengying, encouraging and assisting, contributing to the cure.
Old Madam Han, nearly sixty years old, suffered from tertian malaria (three-year malaria) in mid-winter. Physician Zhu advocated warming and dispersing, allowing her to drink Ginger and Jujube Decoction freely. Ten days later, she could not eat a grain of rice, and vomiting occurred severely upon malaria onset. Physician Huang administered hot tonics, worsening the condition. Ten days later, Mengying examined her: chest oppression and stagnation felt like blockage, yellow bitter tongue coating, thirst, urine as hot as boiling water, wiry and slippery pulse, more pronounced on the right, and leukorrhea pouring down. He prescribed Xiao Xian Xiong Tang combined with Wen Dan Tang plus Xiebai. After ingestion, she vomited copious gelatinous phlegm. After ten-plus days, the chest oppression subsided. He switched to sweet-cool herbs, and the malaria gradually ceased. Gradually incorporating yin-nourishing methods, she recovered completely.
Chen Shunting suffered from malaria that persisted for a long time. His constitution was inherently deficient, and doctors were at a loss. Mengying examined him and said: "The tongue is crimson without fluids, slight chills, and red urine. Originally, this is Spring Warmth transforming into malaria. Neither the constitution nor the disease fits the pattern for Xiao Chai Hu Tang. Overuse of warming dispersants has led to blazing heat and yin injury." He prescribed Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang to clear heat and preserve fluids, resulting in recovery.
The third daughter-in-law of Scholar Zhuang Zhijie suffered from spasms occurring every other day. Mengying palpated the pulse: wiry and rapid. She felt nauseous, had a bitter taste, no appetite, severe chills, headache, and delayed menstruation. Urine was hot as fire. This was Jueyin Summerheat Malaria. He prescribed a large dose of Rhinoceros Horn (Xi Jiao - note: substitute with legal alternatives in practice), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua), Akebiae Caulis (Mutong), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Lianshi, Tianhuafen, and Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Jinyinhua). She recovered in a few days.
Zhao Zishan suffered from malaria, fearing cold and lack of appetite. Mengying palpated: slippery and rapid pulse, yellow coating, red urine, epigastric fullness, and frequent vomiting. He prescribed modified Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang to clear latent summerheat, leading to recovery.
Wang Yifeng's second son suffered from malaria. Due to excessive use of Ginger and Jujube warming dispersants, he developed high fever, deafness, delirium, incontinence of stool and urine, insomnia, confusion, mania, and aggression towards people. Gu Tingquan treated it as latent summerheat without effect. By early winter, Wu Aitang advised seeking Mengying. The pulse was slippery throughout. Mengying added Calami Rhizoma (Shichangpu), Arisaematis Rhizoma cum Bile (Danning), Zhuli, Pearl (Zhenzhu), and Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang) to Gu's prescription of Xi Jiao, etc., along with swallowing Baijin Wan. One dose brought relief; he recovered completely in ten days.
Subsequently, his mother developed fever and frequent vomiting of sticky saliva, splitting headache, bitter taste, deafness, and confused consciousness. The pulse was wiry and rapid. This was latent summerheat complicated by aggressive internal wind. He prescribed Xi Jiao, Yuanshen, Zhuru, Tianhuafen, Zhimu, Lianqiao, Huang Qin, Shihu, Zhizi, Juhua, and Xue Geng. She recovered in seven days.
Gao Ruisheng's younger brother suffered from persistent malaria, emaciation, and anorexia. Doctors attributed it to deficiency. Tonics exacerbated spontaneous sweating. Mengying palpated: wiry and slippery pulse, qi accumulation below the epigastrium. He prescribed Xiao Xian Xiong Tang plus Zhuru, Xuanfu, and Zhishi to resolve phlegm stagnation. Appetite gradually returned. Follow-up with clearing and nourishing methods led to recovery and flesh gain.
Madam Wen, in early summer, suffered from intermittent malaria while eight months pregnant. After several episodes, intense heat caused coma, lower back pain, and threatened miscarriage. Zhang Yangzhi referred her to Mengying. Pulse: surging, slippery, and rapid. Tongue coating: yellow, greasy, and turbid. He prescribed Huang Qin, Zhimu, Zhuru, Zhuye, Jinyinhua, Sangye, Luoguo Si Gua (Si Gualuo), Shihu, Shigao, and Shichangpu. One dose cured her.
Mr. Zhu Jiamu's father, over seventy, suffered from intermittent malaria. People were worried. Mengying palpated: wiry and slippery pulse, epigastric fullness, yellow coating. He said, "Do not worry." He prescribed heat-clearing and phlegm-resolving herbs. He recovered completely after a few doses.
Madam Li Mingfu, over sixty, had chronic phlegm-cough, recently compounded by afternoon fever, anorexia, headache, and inability to eat. Previous treatments failed. Yao Xiaoh recommended Mengying. Pulse: slippery and rapid. This was internal latent phlegm-fire with external warm-heat invasion. Two doses of Shi Gao cleared the heat and restored appetite. Several more doses cured both the current illness and the chronic condition.
Yu Langzhai was thin and weak, suffering from intermittent malaria with less chills and more heat, difficult urination and defecation, extreme epigastric diaphragmatic oppression, greasy coating, and no thirst. Mengying palpated: slow, slippery, and overflowing pulse. He said, "Although your constitution is yin-deficient, phlegm-dampness obstruction prevents using lifting/dispersing methods that might aggravate rebellious qi, nor is it suitable to use cooling/moistening methods that might hinder the pivot mechanism." He prescribed Huashi, Houpo, Zhuru, Xuanfu, Tongcao, Pipaye, Weijing, Yujin, and Lan Ye. The coating faded. He then removed Houpo and Yujin, adding Huanglian, Zhishi, and Banxia. Chest oppression opened, malaria reduced, and bowels unblocked. Finally, he removed Huashi, Banxia, Huanglian, and Zhishi, adding Shashen, Shihu, Ju Pi, and Huang Qin. He recovered in ten days.
Madam Xu Jimi, returning from Weiyang, suffered from chronic malaria in mid-autumn. Treating it herself as cold-dampness worsened the condition. Her nephew Zhiqing thought it was wind-summerheat complicated, prescribing clearing/resolving herbs without effect. Mengying palpated: wiry, slippery, and surging pulse. She was plump, sweaty, had yellow coating, bloody stools, vomiting, thirst, delirium, insomnia, and wanted to lie on the floor. This was abundant latent phlegm with summerheat disturbing the Yangming channel. He prescribed a large dose of Shigao, Zhimu, Xi Jiao, Yuanshen, Shihu, Jinyinhua, Huang Qin, Tianhuafen, Lan Ye, and Zhuli. Three doses stabilized the condition. Zhiqing followed up with consolidating herbs for complete recovery.
Scholar Zhuang Zhijie, aged seventy, suffered from intermittent malaria with trembling chills and delirious speech during fever. Mengying palpated: wiry, rapid, and hurried pulse, black tongue coating, dry mouth. This was latent heat-phlegm with internal latent summerheat. He prescribed Zhimu, Tianhuafen, Yuanshen, Shihu, Huang Qin, Zhuru, Lianqiao, Haizhe, Lufu, and Lianzi Xin. Several sips led to recovery.
In mid-winter, after hosting guests on a lake, he caught wind-pathogens, causing cough with phlegm, headache, anorexia, and chills. Self-medicating with Qianghuo, Zisu, and Jingjie for two doses worsened the condition, leading to thirst and anuria. Mengying palpated: similar to late autumn but with floating quality. The syndrome was Wind-Warmth. Having taken warming dispersants, "the heat became fiercer with wind." The tongue was crimson without fluids, requiring immediate clearing and transformation. He prescribed Sangye, Pipaye, Zhizi, Zhimu, Dongguazi, Yuanshen, Juhua, Tianhuafen, Beimu, and Lizhi. Relief was immediate; he recovered in ten days.
Sister Suo Rongting, returning from Taicang, contracted seasonal malaria. Gu Tingquan's clearing treatment allowed her to eat and rest. Suddenly, she developed rebellious qi, cold limbs, fatigue, drowsiness, deafness, slurred speech, anorexia, normal bowel movements, and no other pain. Knowing her history of blood-loss and chronic qi deficiency, Gu used Renshen and Fuzi, worsening the condition, suspecting collapse. Relative Wu Jiushan summoned Mengying. Pulse: wiry and slow. Tongue: yellow and greasy. It was early pregnancy; (pathogen未尽) obstructed qi and condensed phlegm, blocking the pivot. Treatment required dispersing and resolving. He prescribed Shichangpu, Zhishi, Xuanfu, Banxia, Huanglian, Fuling, Ju Pi, Congbai, Haizhe, and Zhuli. Immediate effect; three doses brought recovery.
Madam Suo Shengxian suffered from malaria progressing to epigastric fullness, vomiting, hiccup, cold nose, spontaneous sweating, anorexia, insomnia, and intermittent pulse. Doctors feared for her life. Mengying diagnosed it as phlegm pathology. He used the formula for Sister Suo Rongting, removing Congbai, Haizhe, and Zhuli, adding Xiebai, Louren, and Zhuru. It proved effective.
Xu Zhiqing started in late autumn. Mengqing had cleared his latent summerheat, nearing recovery. His aunt, knowing medicine, forced a dose of Xiao Chai Hu Tang, worsening the condition. Mengqing prescribed Wen Dan Tang minus Gancao, plus Sheng Shigao, Huang Qin, Zhimu, Tianhuafen, and Lufu, stabilizing the patient.
Relapse occurred due to premature exertion. Mengying was in mourning. Dr. Zhao Dilou used clearing/resolving methods, leading to recovery.
In late winter, moving house caused exhaustion, and intermittent malaria recurred. Facial edema, ankle swelling, asthma, cough, and irritability appeared. People thought it was severe deficiency. Mengying palpated: left wiry, forceful, and rapid; right slippery, large, and irregular. Tongue: yellow and greasy. Thirst and polyuria. This was excess heat-phlegm in Stomach/Lungs and hyperactive wind-yang in Liver/Gallbladder. Fear of deficiency and indiscriminate tonification would not cure. He prescribed Xiyangshen, Zhimu, Tianhuafen, Zhuru, Geke, Shihu, Pipaye, Qinghao, Qinjiao, Baiwei, Jinyinhua, and Haizhe. Four doses induced vomiting of gelatinous phlegm, curing all symptoms.
Sun Chulou, son of Commander Sun Ou Zhen, came from Zhenjiang to Zhejiang, staying at Shi Beiya's home. En route, he developed chills and fever like malaria, hypochondriac pain, cough with phlegm. Beiya saw his dark complexion and emaciation and was worried. A doctor diagnosed "Autumn Malaria" and gave dispersing herbs. Beiya doubted their efficacy and invited Mengying. Mengying said, "It is yin deficiency. Do not treat it as malaria." He prescribed Weijing Tang plus Beishashen, Shudi, Sangye, Danpi, Haishi, Xuanfu, Beimu, and Pipaye. Beiya was shocked by the use of Shudi. Mengying said, "You fear the medicine won't handle the disease; I fear the disease can't handle the medicine. This method clears the lungs, moistens dryness, nourishes kidneys, and clears liver. The disease will settle." Chulou sighed, "Skillful hands! Deeply fitting the condition. In Suzhou, dispersing herbs made me uncomfortable. Host, do not doubt; I will take Dr. Wang's medicine." He recovered in a few days and left for Yue'ou after ten days.
