[Er Xian San (Two Sages Powder)] At the onset of the disease, take ten *jin* (approx. 5 kg) of *Artemisia argyi* (Ai Ye, 艾叶), crush it, and stir-fry it in a copper spoon. (Do not stop stirring; use chopsticks to constantly move and turn it.) Pour in half a small cup of salt brine (thick brine from a tofu shop that has not been diluted with water), stir-fry until dry, then remove and grind into powder. Take with one cup of hot *Baijiu* (Chinese liquor). Wait for rumbling in the abdomen, or for Qi to descend, or for clear fluid to be vomited up; the illness will then be cured.
This formula must be prepared and taken immediately; if left overnight, it loses efficacy. Seeing chickens, dogs, or women after taking the medicine also renders it ineffective. After taking the medicine, tea and fresh meat must be avoided for three days. After recovery, take a dose of light salt water soup on the 1st and 16th day of each lunar month to prevent recurrence permanently. When I was born, my mother, the Tai Furen (Honorable Lady), suffered from this condition which persisted for a long time despite seeking various medical prescriptions without success. I therefore made a vow: if I could find a formula that worked effectively and prevented recurrence, I would publish it to the public to alleviate suffering. Recently, while serving in Yunxian, I obtained this formula from Xu Jin in Dinghai. One dose cured her, and she never relapsed. It is truly a divine art. I dare not keep it secret. I have had it printed and circulated to benefit more people.
*Xiang Fu* (Cyperi Rhizoma, 香附, 1 liang, stir-fried with vinegar), *Chandu Yujin* (Dermolepis yujin from Toad, 蟾肚郁金, 1 liang, stir-fried), *Yuanhusuo* (Corydalis Rhizoma, 元胡索, 1 liang, stir-fried with wine), *Guang Muxiang* (Aucklandiae Radix, 广木香, 2 qian). Grind all into fine powder. Take with good wine; boiling water is also acceptable.
Red dates (7 pieces, pitted and mashed), *Ju Pi* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 橘皮, 3 qian), *Sheng Jiang* (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 生姜, 3 qian). Decoct and take.
Half a cup of Chinese chive juice (*Jiu Cai Zhi*, 韭菜汁). Take it, and the pain will cease immediately. This formula can be used for conditions above the chest.
*Liáng Jiāng* (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma, 良姜, soaked in wine and sun-dried three times), *Xiang Fu* (Cyperi Rhizoma, 香附, soaked in vinegar and sun-dried three times). Grind both into powder. If caused by cold, use 2 qian of *Liang Jiang* and 1 qian of *Xiang Fu*. If caused by anger, use 2 qian of *Xiang Fu* and 1 qian of *Liang Jiang*, add one small spoonful of ginger juice, and mix with rice gruel for administration.
Treats cold accumulation in the Spleen, characterized by chest fullness immediately after every meal, resistant to all other medicines. Also specifically effective for all types of Phlegm-Qi stagnation.
True *Ju Pi* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 橘皮, 1 jin, from citrus/mandarin oranges, do not remove the albedo/mesocarp), *Gan Cao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草, 4 liang), Salt crystals (4 liang). Add five bowls of water, simmer slowly until the two medicinal ingredients are dry, bake until dry, and grind into powder. Take 2-3 qian per dose, mixed with plain boiled water.
According to *Fang Shuo Bo Zhai Bian*, Yi Fang's uncle, Mo Qiangzhong, contracted this illness while serving as the magistrate of Fengcheng. Accidentally, his family prepared a *Ju Pi San* (Orange Peel Powder), so he tried it and found it suitable, thus taking it continuously for several days. One day, he suddenly felt something drop down, became greatly alarmed, stared wide-eyed, sweated profusely like rain, and shortly thereafter experienced abdominal pain, passing several hard masses like iron pellets, which smelled foul. From then on, his chest felt clear and open, and the illness was instantly cured. This was due to cold accumulation in the Spleen.
