Fresh Ginger (60 g, pounded into a paste) Niu Pi Jiao (Cowhide Gelatin, 60 g)
Melt the gelatin, add the ginger paste, stir evenly, and boil into an ointment for use.
First, wash the area clean with Saponaria officinalis water, and wipe dry the oily dirt from the spine and lower back. Then, take a large piece of fresh ginger and rub it all over the area. Next, cut a large piece of fine cloth according to the width and length of the back, spread the ointment on it, and apply it as a plaster. Then, rub palms together until hot, and massage all over the back; it is beneficial if heat is felt throughout. After one or two days without recurrence, the condition will be cured. This syndrome is mostly caused by internal injury from cold raw tea and food, combined with external invasion of cold qi, affecting the Taiyang Bladder Channel. The cold-water pathogen condenses with phlegm-fluids in the Taiyin Lung Channel, forming a stubborn accumulation. This ointment uses a heavy dose of fresh ginger to disperse the entrenched cold, hence the rapid cure. However, ginger contains fibrous strands; if not pounded into a paste, the dregs will float high, the medicinal potency will be weak, and the therapeutic effect will be negligible. The gelatin is used for its adhesive property to prevent detachment. This formula is simple and frequently effective.
Xiong Huang (Realgar) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, each 30 g) Bai Fan (Alum, 60 g)
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. For each use, take 30 g, mix with five sheng (approx. 5 liters) of boiling water, and wash the affected area for a prolonged period. Then, wash again with warm water until it cools down; recovery occurs when sweating ensues.

Treats heart and abdominal small intestine pain, small intestine hernia, blood and qi pain, and all postpartum pains where other medicines are ineffective. This medicine can promote circulation and stop pain; its efficacy is beyond description.
Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterus Dung, equal parts) Pu Huang (Typha Pollen, equal parts)
Grind into powder. Mix evenly with wine or vinegar and boil into an ointment. Add one zhong (approx. 200 ml) of water, decoct until reduced to 70%, and take warm. Alternatively, make pills using vinegar paste. Taking with child's urine and wine is also acceptable.
Boil cotton seeds in water and pour into a jar. Sit with the scrotum at the mouth of the jar. Wait until the water cools. One or two applications will dissipate the cold qi and result in recovery.
