Commentary states: The nature of Rushi (mineral-based tonic) is rigid and fierce, with its qi tending to flare upward. According to principle, it easily damages the warming organs. If fire turns blazing, it internally scorches the Spleen and Lung, resulting in severe heat. If excessive thirst leads to drinking too much water, the fluid flows into the intestines and stomach; when the Stomach receives water, vomiting occurs; when the Intestines receive water, they become cold. Although the Intestines are cold, the internal fire remains unextinguished. As water gradually flows downward forming puddles, dysentery ensues. With deficiency-cold of Stomach Qi, food and fluids fail to digest: if the pathology is in the Yang aspect, fever increases and appetite is lost; if in the Yin aspect, borborygmus and diarrhea occur.
