Commentary states: The onset of cold and heat symptoms caused by "Rushi" (mineral-based tonics, often containing toxic substances such as arsenic and mercury) is due to the accumulation of the hot nature of minerals within the body, combined with immoderate sexual activity, leading to a lack of harmony between Yin and Qi. Generally, Yang diseases manifest as fever, while Yin diseases manifest as chills. If there is an excess of heat, Yang becomes predominant; if there is an excess of cold, Yin becomes predominant. Alternating chills and fever indicate a struggle between Ying (Nutritive Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi), and a mutual overcoming of Yin and Yang, resembling the symptoms seen in Shanghan (Cold Damage) and various types of Nue (Malaria).
Formula for Maidong Wan (Ophiopogon Pill) to treat various Rushi attacks presenting with dry mouth, intermittent chills and fever, and symptoms resembling possession by spirits:
Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed, roasted, 5 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, chopped and stir-fried), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus), Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex, chopped), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, black center removed), Xijiao (Rhino Ceratostigma, shaved), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Daqing (Isatidis Folium or Indigo Naturalis, each 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, 3 fen).
The above twelve ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder, mixed with refined honey, pounded until uniform and cooked, then formed into pills the size of sophora seeds. Take fifteen pills after each meal, washed down with honey water, gradually increasing to twenty pills.
Formula for Xijiao Wan (Hornicorn Pill) to treat Rushi attacks presenting with dry mouth, chills and fever, and symptoms resembling spirit illness:
Xijiao xie (Rhino Ceratostigma shavings), Wujia pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex, chopped), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, black center removed, each 1 liang), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, chopped and slightly stir-fried), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, each 1.5 liang), Daqing (Isatidis Folium or Indigo Naturalis), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, each 3 fen), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed and roasted).
The above nine ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder, mixed with refined honey, and formed into pills the size of sophora seeds. Take fifteen pills after meals, washed down with honey water, gradually increasing to twenty pills. Take one dose each in the morning, at noon, and after sunset.
Formula for Qianhu Tang (Peucedani Decoction) to treat Rushi attacks resembling Shanghan, with chills and fever similar to Nue (Malaria):
Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, rhizome head removed), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, black center removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried and chopped), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, each 2 liang), Muli (Ostreae Concha, calcined), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, each 3 liang).
The above six ingredients are coarsely crushed and sifted. For each dose, take four qianbi (approx. 4-6 grams), add one dan and a half of water, one large piece of fresh ginger (Shengjiang, Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and two dates (Dazao, Jujubae Fructus) split open. Decoct until reduced to eight parts, strain, and take warm.
Formula for Huatuo Shaoyao Tang (Huatuo's Peony Decoction) to treat Rushi toxicity persisting for twenty to thirty years, causing chills and fever, trembling as if chilled, appetite loss or lack thereof. If caused by Zhi Yanshi (Purple Quartz) leading to fever, it results in heat oppression, drowsiness, preference for lying down, and weakness upon rising. These arise from Fu organ Qi generation, unknown to Zang organs; the mineral heat is dry and causes trembling, while mineral realgar (Shiliuhuang) causes heat stagnation. In extreme heat, the body may even rupture.
Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Skin, black skin removed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Lanshi (Indigo Naturalis or Baphicacanthi Cuspidis Folium et Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, black center removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried and reddened, each 1 liang), Ji (Shepherd's Purse, 2 liang), Manjingzi (Vitex Fruit, 1 sheng).
Except for Manjingzi, the above eight ingredients are crushed into coarse powder. For each dose, take five qianbi, use four dan of water. First decoct one he of Manjingzi until reduced to three dan, then strain. Add the coarse powder, decoct until reduced to one dan and a half, strain, and divide into three warm doses. Take one dose each in the morning, at noon, and after sunset.
Treatment for Rushi attacks causing trembling and aversion to cold, or fever resembling Wen Nue (Warm Malaria), caused by improper diet, fasting, or lack of bathing:
Immediately consume cold food and wash the body several times with cold water; this will lead to recovery.
Treatment for Rushi attacks complicated by seasonal epidemic pathogens, where cold and heat are unbalanced, triggering Rushi symptoms. These are caused by cold and heat. The presentation resembles Nue (Malaria); if untreated for long, it damages life. Even with herbal decoctions, cure is difficult. It is advisable to bathe in a mixture of raw and cooked water (temperature-regulated bath).
Prepare half a basin of warm water; if too hot, add cold water to adjust. Sit in the bathwater. After a moment, all joints will relax, and the qi of cold and heat will exit through the pores, transforming into sweating. If there is heat oppression in the heart, drink a small amount of hot water to settle it. Remain out of the bath for a long time, cover with blankets, and sleep; recovery will be sudden and complete. For severe cases, two or three sessions are sufficient.
