Discussion states: Lao Er (deafness due to overstrain) is caused by deficiency and exhaustion of Kidney Qi. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian is the gathering point of numerous vessels, and its Qi connects to the ears. If Kidney Qi is weak, causing depletion of these gathered vessels, how can the area connected by Qi remain clear in hearing without becoming deaf? Old theories suggest that this condition worsens with fatigue; therefore, treatment should involve moderating desires and being cautious in daily life to avoid damaging the Kidneys.

For treating Kidney-deficiency Lao Er, Neibu Wan (Internal Tonifying Pill):
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Dihuang, baked), Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fuzi, roasted until cracked, peel and umbilicus removed), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, remove coarse bark), Cistancheae Herba (Rou Cong Rong, soaked in wine overnight, sliced and baked), Cervi Cornus Pantotrichum (Lurong, remove hair, soak in wine overnight, roast with su), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu, each 1 liang), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao, 1.5 liang), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, remove seedlings, 3 qian), Picrorhizae Rhizoma (Huhuanglian, 1 qian), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, remove heart, 0.5 liang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, remove seedlings and leaves, 0.5 liang), Poria (Baifuling, remove black skin, 1 qian), Gypsum Fibrosum (Zhongru, select goose-tube variety, 2 liang, boil in Licorice Decoction for three days, then grind for three days).
The above thirteen ingredients, excluding those to be ground separately, are processed into fine powder, mixed evenly, and made into pills the size of Sophora seeds using refined honey. Take 20 pills orally with warm wine on an empty stomach.

For treating Lao Er with purulent discharge from the ear, possessing Kidney-tonifying effects, Cishi Tang (Magnetite Decoction):
Magnetitum (Cishi, 2 liang, quenched in vinegar seven times), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu, washed and stir-fried), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu, soaked in rice water overnight, chopped and baked), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiong), Viticis Fructus (Mojingzi), Poria cum Radix Xylom (Fushen, remove woody core), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao, remove pulp, stir-bran fry until yellow), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, roasted and chopped), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, soak in hot water, remove white pith and bake), Lycii Cortex (Digupi, remove soil), Asparagi Radix (Tiangmendong, remove heart, each 1 liang).
The above twelve ingredients are coarsely crushed and sieved. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi, boiled with 1.5 sheng of water, half a fen of chopped fresh ginger, and 2 he of bamboo sap. Decoct until reduced to 0.7 parts, strain, and take warm. Administer three times daily.

For treating chronic Lao Er with tinnitus, Rou Cong Rong Wan (Cistanche Pill):
Cistancheae Herba (Rou Cong Rong, soaked in wine overnight, sliced and baked), Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fuzi, roasted until cracked, peel and umbilicus removed), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, roasted until cracked), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu, washed and lightly stir-fried), Morindae Officinalis Radix (Bajitian, remove heart), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, remove coarse bark), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi, soaked in wine overnight, pounded separately), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Dihuang, baked), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu, remove roots), Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi, lightly stir-fried), Poria (Baifuling, remove black skin), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, moisten with wine, slice and bake), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, remove seedlings and leaves), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, roasted and chopped, total 3 liang), Ovis Ren (Yangshen, one pair, thinly sliced, remove fascia, roast dry).
The above twenty-three ingredients, except Tusizi, are ground into fine powder. Add the powdered Tusizi, sift repeatedly, and make into pills the size of Sophora seeds using refined honey. Take 20 pills after meals with warm wine, gradually increasing to 30 pills, three times daily.

For treating chronic Lao Er with purulent discharge, possessing Kidney-tonifying effects, Shihu Wan (Dendrobium Pill):
Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu, remove roots), Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fuzi, roasted until cracked, peel and umbilicus removed), Cistancheae Herba (Rou Cong Rong, soaked in wine overnight, sliced and baked), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu, washed and lightly stir-fried), Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi, soaked in wine overnight, pounded separately), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, remove coarse bark), Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie), Crotonis Fructus (Badou, remove peel, heart, and membrane, stir-fry until yellow, pound into paste, wrap in paper and press to remove oil), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, slice and bake), Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi, stir-fry), Poria (Baifuling, remove black skin), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, roasted), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu, soaked in rice water overnight, chopped and baked), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Dihuang, baked), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, remove seedlings and leaves), Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, remove heart), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, finely chopped, each 1 liang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, remove forked tips, 3 qian).
The above nineteen ingredients, except Tusizi, are ground into fine powder. Add the powdered Tusizi, sift repeatedly, and make into pills the size of Sophora seeds using refined honey. Take 15 pills orally with warm wine, three times daily.

For treating Lao Er with empty tinnitus and ear blockage, Bamazi Wan (Castor Bean Pill):
Ricini Semen (Bamazi, remove shell and pound), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, soak in hot water, remove peel and tip, double-kernel ones stir-fry until yellow), Persicae Semen (Taoren, soak in hot water, remove peel and tip, double-kernel ones stir-fry until yellow), Magnetitum (Cishi, quenched in vinegar seven times), Tetrapanacis Medulla (Mutong, chopped), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu, each 1 liang), Crotonis Fructus (Badou, remove peel, stir-fry until yellow, 1 qian), Natrii Chloridum (Yan, pounded, 3 qian), Cera Flava (La, 3 liang), Rosin (Songzhi, pounded), Frankincense (Ruxiang, pounded, each 2.5 liang), Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fuzi, roasted until cracked, peel and umbilicus removed, 0.5 liang).
The above twelve ingredients: first pound Changpu, Cishi, Fuzi, and Mutong into fine powder. Then pound the other medicines separately into a paste, mix with the previous powder, and pound for thousands of strokes. Make into pills the size of jujube pits. Wrap in cotton and insert into the ear, changing once daily.

For treating chronic Lao Er with ear blockage, Changpu San (Acorus Powder):
Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu), Corni Fructus (Shanzhuyu, washed and lightly stir-fried), Trichosanthis Radix (Tugua Gen), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, soaked in wine overnight and baked), Ampelopsis Radix (Bailian, each 0.5 liang), Magnetitum (Cishi, quenched in vinegar seven times, 1 liang).
The above seven ingredients are made into a fine powder. Each dose is 1 qianbi, wrapped in cotton and inserted into the ear, changing once daily.

For treating chronic Lao Er with ear blockage, Liuhuang San (Sulfur Powder):
Realgar (Shiliuhuang), Orpiment (Ci Huang, each 1 qian).
The above two ingredients are ground into fine powder. Each dose is 1 qianbi, wrapped in cotton and inserted into the ear. After several days, hearing of human speech will return.

For treating Lao Er with ear drops, Tongzi Xiaonbian (Child's Urine):
The above single ingredient. Take a small amount and instill into the ear.
