It is discussed that when the throat is swollen and painful, and voice cannot be produced, it is due to wind pathogen and heat pathogen stagnating and lodging in the meridians of the Spleen and Lung. The evil heat follows the meridians upward and congregates in the throat, causing blood vessels to be obstructed and blocked, thus leading to swelling and pain in the throat; in severe cases, the airway becomes blocked, resulting in loss of voice.
For treating throat swelling and pain, inability to speak, sudden onset of wind-toxin invading the throat, accompanied by a stiff tongue, pain in the head, face, and body, throat obstruction, and impending suffocation, use the Chenxiang Tang (Agarwood Decoction):
Chenxiang (Agarwood) [Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum] (crushed), Muxiang (Vladimiria Root) [Aucklandiae Radix], Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome) [Belamcandae Rhizoma], Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) [Saposhnikoviae Radix] (bristles removed), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) [Cimicifugae Rhizoma], Gancao (Licorice Root) [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] (roasted), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) [Angelicae Sinensis Radix] (sliced and dried), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) [Scutellariae Radix] (black heart removed).
Xunluxiang (Frankincense) [Boswelliae Resina], Huoxiangye (Patchouli Leaf) [Pogostemonis Folium], Jitixiang (Cloves) [Caryophylli Flos] (each 1 liang), Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root) [Angelicae Pubescentis Radix] (rhizome removed, 3 liang), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem) [Ephedrae Herba] (roots and joints removed, decocted first with foam skimmed off, then dried, 3 fen), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) [Rhei Radix et Rhizoma] (crushed, used raw, 2 liang).
The above fourteen ingredients are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi, decocted in one zhan of water until reduced to six-tenths. Strain and take warm after meals, three times daily.
For treating the sensation of obstruction in the throat as if by a foreign body, and inability to produce voice or breath, use the Zhupi Tang (Bamboo Bark Decoction):
Zhupi (Bamboo Bark) [Phyllostachys Nigrae Culmis], Gancao (Licorice Root) [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] (roasted, each 1 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Root) [Panacis Ginseng Radix], Chifuling (Red Poria) [Poria cum Ligno Rubrum], Mahuang (Ephedra Stem) [Ephedrae Herba] (roots and joints removed, decocted first with foam skimmed off, then dried), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) [Cinnamomi Ramulus] (bark removed), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit) [Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus], Mutong (Akebia Stem) [Akebiae Caulis] (crushed, each 3 fen).
The above eight ingredients are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi, decocted in one zhan of water with half a fen of sliced fresh ginger added. Reduce to six-tenths, strain, let cool to warm, take at any time, three times daily.

The above single ingredient is coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi, decocted in one zhan of water until reduced to six-tenths. Strain and take warm, at any time, three times daily.
