Commentary states: Whenever accumulated Qi resides under the right hypochondrium and swells to the size of a cup, it is an accumulation in the Lung. The Qi rushes upward, obstructing respiration, named Xiben (Lung Accumulation). This originates from Heart disease transmitting to the Lung; the Lung should transmit to the Liver, but the Liver is prosperous in Spring and rejects the pathogen. The pathogen rebounds to the Lung, thus knotting into an accumulation. If prolonged without resolution, it causes chills and fever, panting, coughing, and Lung obstruction. The reason is that the Lung governs Qi and connects externally with skin and hair. Now, Lung Qi stagnates and accumulates, hence the diseases of chills, fever, panting, coughing, and Lung obstruction.
For treating Lung accumulation Xiben with abdominal distension, cough, and purulent bloody sputum, use Sangbaipi Tang (Mulberry Root Bark Decoction):
Sanggenbaidi (Mulberry Root Bark) (chopped), 1.5 liang; Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (heart removed, roasted), 1.5 liang; Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) (rough bark removed); Gancao (Licorice Root) (roasted, chopped), each 0.5 liang; Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel) (soaked in water, white pith removed, roasted).
The above six herbs are coarsely crushed and sifted. Each dose consists of 3 qianbi (approx. 9g), boiled in one sheng (approx. 200ml) of water with half a slice of smashed Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Decoct until reduced to 7/10, strain, and take warm. Take once on an empty stomach and once before evening meal.
For treating Lung accumulation Xiben with upward rushing Qi, chest fullness, and reverse coughing, use Zhishi Tang (Immature Bitter Orange Decoction):
Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) (pulp removed, bran-roasted); Muxiang (Costus Root); Binglang (Areca Seed) (chopped); Gancao (Licorice Root) (roasted, chopped); Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit) (soaked in water, roasted dry); Tinglizi (Descurainia Seed) (chopped); Dingxiang (Clove Bud), each 3 fen.
The above eight herbs are crushed, sieved into powder, mixed with dates paste, and formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Each dose is 20 pills, gradually increased to 30 pills, taken with decoction of fried beans. Take once on an empty stomach, at noon, midnight, and before sleep.
Commentary states: Whenever accumulated Qi arises in the lower abdomen and reaches up to the epigastrium, resembling a piglet, moving up or down irregularly, it is an accumulation in the Kidney, where Kidney Water overacts on the Heart. The manifestation is Qi rushing like a piglet, named Benteng (Roving Pig). This originates from Spleen disease transmitting to the Kidney; the Kidney should transmit to the Heart, but the Heart is prosperous in Summer and rejects the pathogen. The pathogenic Qi remains in the Kidney, knotting into an accumulation. If prolonged without resolution, it causes panting, reverse Qi, bone萎 (atrophy), and shortness of breath. The reason is that the Kidney governs the Qi of bone marrow. If Qi stagnates and accumulates, failing to nourish the bone marrow, it transforms into bone atrophy disease.
For treating Benteng Qi rushing to the Heart causing chest oppression, use Binglang San (Areca Seed Powder):
Binglang (Areca Seed) (chopped); Helile (Chebulic Myrobalan) (roasted, core removed), each 2 liang; Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit) (aged, washed in water, roasted dry), 1.5 liang; Qianniuzi (Pharbitis Seed) (lightly roasted), 3 liang.
The above four herbs are crushed, sieved into powder. Each dose is 1 qianbi (approx. 3g), taken with half a zhan (approx. 100ml) of urine from a young boy on an empty stomach. Effect is seen within three doses. It can also be used for Yin-Yang Erdu Shanghan (Yin-Yang Two Poisons Cold Damage) and Hongxiangjiao (Hong Kong Foot/Gout).
