Discourse states: Zhu Qi (疰气, a type of chronic abdominal disease characterized by tightness and pain) refers to the condition where the abdomen around the navel becomes tight, hard, and painful on both left and right sides, extending horizontally like an arm. Its tension is likened to the tightness of a bowstring. Hence it is called Zhu Qi. This is generally caused by improper regulation of cold and heat, excessive sexual activity, leading to deficiency and exhaustion of True Yang (Zhen Yang, the fundamental yang energy). Internal generation of yin-cold causes water-fluids entering the stomach to fail in digestion and transformation. These fluids flow into the hypochondriac region. If not removed over time, they become a stubborn disease. When exposed to yin-cold or consuming cold foods, pain occurs. Prolonged illness leads to inability to eat and emaciation.
Formula for treating acute pain of Zhu Qi with gradual yellowing and emaciation: Dahuang Tang (Rhubarb Decoction)
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, chopped and stir-fried) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, two liang each) Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, coarse bark removed) Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-roasted, skirt removed, one and a half liang each) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-roasted) Helile (Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus, lightly roasted, pit removed)
The above seven herbs are coarsely crushed and sieved. Each dose consists of three qianbi (approx. 9g), boiled in one sheng (approx. 200ml) of water until reduced to six parts. Strain the dregs, add Yuxiao (Natrii Sulfas, approx. 1-2g), mix well, and take warm. Take on an empty stomach and in the evening. Efficacy is indicated by the discharge of rotting flesh and blood.
Formula for treating Zhu Qi with sour regurgitation, acid heartburn, and sensation of obstruction in the chest and diaphragm: Qianniuzi Wan (Pharbitidis Semen Pill)
Qianniuzi (Pharbitidis Semen, raw, pounded, sifted into powder, slow-cooked with one sheng of Shengjiang juice until thick like maltose, take two liang) Naosha (Sal Nitratis, slow-cooked in water until frost forms, one liang) Taoren (Pruni Semen, blanched, skin and tip removed, double-kernel fried yellow, separately ground, one and a half liang) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, cracked and processed, umbilical skin removed) Binglang (Arecae Semen, roasted and chopped) Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed) Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, three liang each)
