First, insert five needles into the hair tuft on the head. Place a vessel filled with water over it, cover with new cloth, and place a large-mouthed vessel horizontally on top. Then, solemnly call out to and gaze at the person; they will inevitably want to rise and run away. Do not listen to them. Instead, take some water and spray it on them once, blow air towards them while observing, repeat this three times until the water becomes warm. Wipe off the water, flick the forehead near the hairline with your finger, and ask if they wish to be cured. The person will inevitably refuse to answer. After flicking fourteen times (two sevens), they will answer. Then, use a needle to prick the empty space near the medial side of the philtrum (Renzhong, GV26) below the nose. Retain the needle. At the pulsating depression anterior to the root of both ears, retain the needle. Prick one cun above the nose along the midline entering the hairline, placing the needle horizontally. Prick straight up from the nose again. Stop when the patient regains consciousness.

Soon after, the "ghost" will state its name and beg to leave. Ask gently, then release the hands.
