It is stated that chest bi (Chest Obstruction) and shortness of breath are caused by the weakness of the zang-fu organs, disharmony of yin and yang, and the invasion and accumulation of wind-cold pathogenic factors in the chest. If the pulse is excessive or deficient, presenting a "superficially weak and deep-taut" (Yang Wei, Yin Xian) pattern, it leads to chest bi accompanied by pain. This occurs due to extreme deficiency. A superficially weak pulse indicates chest bi, while a deep-taut pulse indicates abdominal pain. Furthermore, the Lung governs Qi; when Lung Qi is deficient, one experiences shortness of breath. In an ordinary person without chills or fever, if there is shortness of breath with insufficient respiratory capacity, it indicates a constitution of excess. Excess implies abundant Qi; abundance leads to rebellious Qi flow; rebellion causes obstruction; thus, shortness of breath also results. Any pulse appearing deep, slow, small, or tight is indicative of chest bi and shortness of breath.
