The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian originates below the little toe, slants towards the center of the foot (Yongquan, KI1), emerges below Ran Gu (KI2), follows the posterior aspect of the medial malleolus, branches into the heel, ascends along the posterior-medial aspect of the lower leg, emerges at the posterior-medial border of the thigh, penetrates the spine, and connects with the Kidney (Shen), linking to the Bladder (Pangguang). Its straight branch ascends from the Kidney, passes through the Liver (Gan) and diaphragm, enters the Lung (Fei), follows the throat, and flanks the root of the tongue. Its branch emerges from the Lung, connects with the Heart (Xin), and pours into the chest. When this meridian is affected, symptoms include hunger without desire to eat, a dark complexion like earth, coughing up blood, panting with audible sounds, restlessness (sitting but wanting to rise), blurred vision as if unable to see, a sensation of the heart hanging empty, a condition resembling hunger but not true hunger. Qi deficiency leads to fearfulness, with the mind trembling as if someone were about to capture it; this is called "Bone Jue" (Gu Jue). This meridian governs diseases generated by the Kidney: heat in the mouth and dryness of the tongue, swelling and obstruction in the throat, upward rushing of Qi, dryness and pain in the pharynx, vexation and heart pain, jaundice, intestinal dysentery (Chang Pi), pain along the spine, buttocks, and posterior-medial border of the thigh, wasting-contraction syndromes (Wei Ju), lethargy, heat and pain in the soles of the feet. In excess conditions, the Qi Kou pulse is twice as large as the Ying Kou pulse; in deficiency conditions, the Qi Kou pulse is smaller than the Ying Kou pulse.
The collateral branch of the Foot-Shaoyin Meridian is named Da Zhong (KI4). It is located behind the ankle, winding around the heel, and branches off to connect with the Taiyang Meridian. Another branch travels along the main meridian upwards to the lower pericardium, externally penetrating the waist and spine. Diseases of this collateral involve Qi rebellion causing oppression and fullness; excess conditions present with urinary retention (Bi Long); deficiency conditions present with lower back pain. Treatment involves selecting the point where the collateral branches off.
The sinews of the Foot-Shaoyin Meridian originate below the little toe, running together with the sinews of the Taiyin Meridian, slanting to the lower aspect of the medial malleolus, binding at the calcaneus, combining with the sinews of the Taiyang Meridian to ascend and bind below the medial condyle of the tibia, running together with the Taiyin sinews upwards along the medial thigh, binding at the genitalia, running inside the spine, flanking the paraspinal muscles, ascending to the nape, binding at the occiput, and combining with the sinews of the Foot-Taiyang Meridian. Pathological manifestations include spasms in the sole of the foot, and pain and spasms at all points of passage and binding. Diseases here primarily manifest as epilepsy (Xian Yuan) and tetany (Jing). If the pathology is on the exterior, flexion is impaired; if on the interior, extension is impaired. Thus, Yang pathologies cause hyperextension of the waist preventing flexion, while Yin pathologies prevent extension. Treatment utilizes burning needle (Fan Zhen) and rapid puncture (Jie Ci), determined by efficacy and using painful points as acupoints. For internal pathologies, apply moxibustion warming (Wen), guidance exercises (Dao Yin), and herbal medicine. Frequent severe attacks are fatal and incurable, termed "Zhongqiu Bi" (Mid-Autumn Obstruction).
When pathogenic factors invade the collaterals of the Foot-Shaoyin Meridian, sudden heart pain, acute abdominal distension, and fullness in the chest and hypochondrium occur. If there is no accumulation, bleed the area anterior to Ran Gu (KI2); recovery occurs within the time it takes to eat a meal. If not cured, treat the left side with right-side points and vice versa. For newly onset diseases, five treatments suffice.
When pathogenic factors invade the collaterals of the Foot-Shaoyin Meridian, sore throat prevents swallowing food, unprovoked irritability occurs, and Qi rushes upward to the贲 (Ben). Puncture the central vessels of the sole three times on each side, totaling six punctures, for immediate relief. Treat left with right, right with left. For swollen throat preventing swallowing and inability to expectorate saliva, bleed the area anterior to Ran Gu (KI2) for immediate relief, using cross-puncture methods.
Kidney disease manifests as abdominal distension, leg edema, wheezing and cough, heavy body, night sweats, and aversion to wind. Deficiency presents with chest pain, lower abdominal pain, cold extremities (Qing Jue), and low mood. Treatment involves selecting blood vessels from the Shaoyin and Taiyang meridians.
Kidney Heat Disease begins with lower back pain and soreness, bitter thirst with frequent drinking, and fever. When heat struggles with healthy Qi, neck pain and stiffness occur, accompanied by chills and soreness, hot soles, and reluctance to speak. Qi rebellion causes dizziness and vertigo. Symptoms worsen on Wu and Ji days, and profuse sweating occurs on Ren and Gui days. Qi rebellion leading to death occurs on Wu and Ji days. Treatment involves needling the Foot-Shaoyin and Foot-Taiyang meridians. In kidney heat disease, the chin first turns red. Generally, heat diseases begin with heaviness, bone pain, deafness, and a desire to close the eyes; needle the Foot-Shaoyin. For severe cases, use the fifty-nine-point needling method.

Regarding the Foot-Shaoyin Meridian generally, it often has less blood and more Qi. Needling should aim to release Qi and avoid blood. The meridian runs from foot to abdomen. Assess reversality/compliance and apply following/following techniques. Tonify deficiency, drain excess, hasten heat, retain cold, moxa sinking/depressed conditions, and select points on the meridian itself for balanced conditions. This is the method for treating the Foot-Shaoyin Meridian.
