Medical Questions from the Radio Station
To Mr. Lu Shie, esteemed teacher: I respectfully write to inform you that I have been engaged in engraving work for a long time, and my constitution is somewhat weak and frail. Sitting at work all day, since last August, I have often suffered from lower back soreness when sitting, and my urine is often yellowish. However, when standing or walking, I feel no pain or soreness at all. I do not know if this is due to Kidney Deficiency (deficiency of Kidney essence) or harm caused by prolonged sitting. I have heard that you lecture on basic medical knowledge every day on the radio station, possessing rich experience. Therefore, I specially take the pen to ask for your advice. Could you please bestow a prescription upon me, or advise how it should be treated? I hope you will show me the way. If I can recover from this illness, it will all be thanks to your grace. Later, I will repay you with my life. I respectfully make this request and wish you peace in your endeavors. Xu XX
Your ailment is caused by prolonged sitting at work and lack of movement in the waist area; it has nothing to do with Kidney Deficiency (Kidney Essence Deficiency). I present a small prescription below; please take seven doses, and it should be effective. Soybean Sprout (Da Dou Juan) 3 qian, Angelica Pubescens Root (Duhuo) 1.5 qian, two cups of clear water, decocted until one cup remains, remove the dregs and take orally, once a day, for a total of seven days.
To Mr. Shie, esteemed teacher: I often listen to you contribute public knowledge of National Medicine on the radio, and I am very grateful and admire you. I have suffered from Asthma (Wheezing) for over twenty years. Every time the solar terms change, the disease occurs, feeling slightly strenuous. When it flares up, there are slight symptoms of Chills and Fever (aversion to cold and fever), headache, and thin phlegm. I do not know what method can treat it. According to your vision, can it be cured completely? I earnestly request a good method, and I am extremely grateful and confused. Please accept my spring greetings. Gu XX
The ailments affecting your body are merely Wheezing (Asthma/Wheezing) and Phlegm (Phlegm-Retention). There are treatment methods and good prescriptions. Although it may not necessarily cure the root cause, it can certainly reduce some suffering. As for the Chills and Fever (Averson to Cold and Fever) and Headache, these are due to Acute Seasonal Invasion (Invasion by seasonal pathogens). You must consult a local practitioner of National Medicine for diagnosis and treatment; a fixed prescription cannot be predetermined. The prescriptions for treating Wheezing and Phlegm are contained in "New Talk on National Medicine... Public Medical Common Sense," which you can check, copy, and take according to instructions; it will naturally be effective. "New Talk on National Medicine" is published by Xiaojing Shanfang on Sima Road.
Lu Shie's Reply to Mr. Wu Feiyu regarding the Question on the Contraceptive Prescription: The original prescription states to take five doses before and after menstruation. By "before menstruation," does it mean counting backwards five days from the expected date of Tian Gui (Menstruation)? Should one take one dose daily? By "after menstruation," does it mean starting from the day the Tian Gui is completely clean, taking one dose daily?
Answer: "Before menstruation" refers to anticipating the period before the menstrual blood is about to flow; whether in the first, second, or third ten-day period, one can calculate backwards. "After menstruation" starts counting from the first day after menstruation ends. Question: For this prescription, should each dose be decocted twice, or only the first decoction be taken?
Answer: It is up to you whether to use the first or second decoction.
Question: Can it be taken as usual during the breastfeeding period if menstruation still occurs?
Answer: Yes, it can be taken as usual.
Question: In normal people, even if menstruation does not occur during the breastfeeding period, pregnancy can still happen. Can this prescription prevent such pregnancy? If one wishes to take this prescription under the described circumstances to avoid pregnancy, how should the terms "before menstruation" and "after menstruation" be calculated?
Answer: Take ten doses each month. After taking them for three months, it will naturally be effective.
The rationale of this prescription is very clever, yet you keep asking incessantly. Are you an outsider to National Medicine? Those who are experts would understand at a glance and would certainly not ask.
Explanation of the Contraceptive Prescription
After I wrote "New Talk on National Medicine," which was published by Xiaojing Shanfang on Sima Road, Shanghai, less than four months passed, and the initial print run of six thousand copies was sold out. Popular songs being sung by many, the response across the country was beyond my expectations. "New Talk" published two prescriptions: one for Contraception (Birth Control) and one for Smoking Cessation. Among the scholars, there were particularly many questions regarding the Contraceptive Prescription. Letters for discussion came several times a day. I could not answer enough nor reply enough, which was quite distressing. This prescription was also reprinted in Taiwan's "East-West Medical Journal." Mr. Sun, Mr. Zhang, and Mr. Li from the Tianjin Chinese-Western Integrated Medical Society also expressed doubt and wrote for an explanation. Therefore, I published the letters and answers in the newspaper, and what I told Mr. Sun, Mr. Zhang, and Mr. Li, I tell the readers of "New Talk on National Medicine." From now on, even if you ask, I will not reply. [I earnestly hope] you will forgive me. The original letter from Mr. Sun, Mr. Zhang, and Mr. Li is as follows:
To Mr. Lu Shie, great Daoist master: I have long admired your name and know that you are highly regarded in the Southern Chinese medical circle. Due to geographical barriers, I regret not having had the opportunity to hear your teachings. I recently read in issue 79 of Taiwan's "East-West Medical Journal" your introduction of an effective Song Dynasty prescription for stopping pregnancy and its rescue prescription. You praised its exquisite organization and ingenious design, stating it must be effective. I secretly think this prescription contains only six ingredients, which seem ordinary and unremarkable. How can it have such miraculous effects? Moreover, four ingredients are the same in both prescriptions. The contraceptive prescription uses Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai) and Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), while the rescue prescription replaces them with Astragalus Root (Huangqi) and Cinnamon Twig (Rougui), resulting in vastly different functions. Our knowledge is shallow, and we cannot deeply penetrate its profound usage. We specially write to inquire, respectfully requesting you to explain the intent behind the two prescriptions in detail, either directly by letter or published in the newspaper. Not only will we resolve our doubts and open our minds, but it will also be gladly heard by colleagues in the medical field. Sincerely awaiting your peace.
Sun X, Zhang XX, Li XX bow together.
Reply: This prescription has no deep meaning; it merely relies on a "clever" aspect. Consider the six ingredients; if you remove Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu) and Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai), what are the remaining four ingredients? Once you know Chuanxiong, Angelica Sinensis, Rehmannia, and Peony, you should study what decoction Chuanxiong, Angelica, Rehmannia, and Peony constitute. Once you know Siwu Decoction (Four Substances Decoction), you should study what effects Siwu Decoction has and what diseases it treats. Knowing that Siwu Decoction regulates menstruation and specifically treats menstrual disorders in women, you should then study where menstrual blood comes from. Researching this point reveals that Siwu Decoction specifically aids conception. Whether conception occurs or not depends entirely on the Blood Chamber (Uterus). Now, with Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu) and Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai) following Siwu Decoction to enter the Blood Chamber, they can exert their efficacy, thereby destroying the vitality of the Blood Chamber. Once vitality is destroyed, how can conception occur again? Astragalus Root (Huangqi) and Cinnamon Twig (Rougui) are opposite in nature to Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu) and Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai). Cinnamon Twig warms the Blood Chamber, and Astragalus Root stimulates vital energy, naturally bringing life from death. Your argument says it is ordinary and unremarkable, yet asks why it has such miraculous effects. I say precisely because it is ordinary, it requires long-term use; precisely because it is unremarkable, it is called a clever prescription. If one exclusively uses harsh blood-breaking drugs, it is crude and unreasonable, leading to numerous drawbacks, and does not deserve to be called exquisite. Lu Shie respectfully replies.
Medical Consultant Encyclopedia
Recently, publications produced by various shops generally have no value worth looking at. Is it that ancient and modern people are not comparable? It is likely due to hasty compilation and lack of careful selection, causing this drawback. However, the newly published "Medical Consultant Encyclopedia" by World Book Bureau, reviewed by me, is quite practical. It can be considered a leader in the publishing world. I specially introduce two general discussions as follows:
Instructions for Decocting Medicine: The method of decocting medicine is extremely important. If decocted correctly, the disease condition is easily cured; if not, neither benefit is seen, but harm appears instead. This method cannot be ignored. Generally, medicines for Exogenous Diseases (diseases caused by external pathogens) are mostly aromatic and penetrating, and should not be decocted for too long. Over-decoction causes the aroma to dissipate and the nature to change, often losing its efficacy. Medicines for Endogenous Injuries (internal damage) are mostly tonifying. They should be decocted for a long time; under-decoction means the medicinal power does not emerge, and efficacy is not seen. Decocting medicines for Exogenous Diseases should use high heat. Decocting medicines for Endogenous Injuries should use low heat.
Inula Flower (Xuanfuhua) and Loquat Leaf (Pipaye) should be wrapped during decoction. If not wrapped, they often cause choking because the hairs enter the lungs. Pills, powders, and pastes should also be wrapped during decoction, so the soup is clear and not turbid, making it easier to swallow.
Amomum Fruit (Sharen) and Cardamom Seed (Kouren) must be added later; over-decoction loses their efficacy.
Oryza Sativa Var. Glutinosa Root (Nuodaogen) must be cleaned of mud; otherwise, it is difficult to swallow.
Instructions for Taking Medicine: The method of administration is extremely important. Taking medicine correctly can achieve twice the result with half the effort. Generally, for diseases in the upper part, medicine should be taken after meals. The medicine stays above the food, preventing it from going down and dispersing its power, so diseases of the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner) heal themselves. For diseases in the lower part, medicine should be taken before meals. Eating immediately after taking medicine keeps the medicine below the food, directing its power downward, so efficacy is seen.
For conditions of False Heat and True Cold, hot medicine should be taken cool. For False Cold and True Heat, cool medicine should be taken hot.
Medicine for Hematemesis (Vomiting Blood) should be taken cool.
Tonifying medicines should be taken as paste/syrup.
Chronic diseases should be treated with pills and powders.
All these are effective methods for taking medicine. Please pay attention.
Smoking Cessation
Since the strict enforcement of smoking bans, addicts have been trembling in fear. However, smoking cessation medicines on the market that are perfectly safe, beneficial without any drawbacks, are rare. The prescription I previously disclosed in "Zuan Bao" showed considerable effect. Many wrote to thank me after seeing results. Later, requests to copy this prescription came several times a day. Thus, I published the prescription in "New Talk on National Medicine" published by Xiaojing Shanfang on Sima Road, Shanghai. Whenever someone asked for the prescription, I instructed them to buy "New Talk" to read themselves, saving some trouble. However, although this prescription is good, it is still cumbersome, which is inconvenient for those living away from home. I specially re-studied this prescription to create a new Smoking Cessation Prescription, which is effective and convenient, and will be disclosed in this publication tomorrow.
New Smoking Cessation Prescription
This prescription is extremely effective, perfectly safe, beneficial without any drawbacks.
High-quality black tea leaves 2 liang, salt 2 liang, clear water 3 large bowls. Decoct over low heat until one bowl of medicinal juice remains. Filter out the dregs, store in a covered bowl. Wait until completely cool, then add 1 liang of opium paste, stirring well.
Whenever an craving occurs, flush one spoonful of medicinal juice with boiling water. Place another bowl of cold boiled water nearby. After taking, add one spoonful of cold boiled water to the medicinal juice. That is, for every spoonful of medicinal juice removed, add one spoonful of cold boiled water. The water content of the juice remains unchanged, but the medicinal strength thins daily. It can be quit in about one month. During hot weather, the medicinal juice should be stewed over water daily.
The rationale of this prescription: Tobacco is the remainder of fire; fire flares upward, and upward flare tastes bitter. Salt is formed from water; water moistens downward, and downward moisture tastes salty. Using salt to control tobacco toxicity. Opium can travel through the Twelve Meridians. No meridian is not entered, no collateral is not traversed. Tea leaves can also travel through the Twelve Meridians. No meridian is not entered, no collateral is not traversed. Where salt cannot reach or penetrate, tea leaves guide it, leaving no place untouched. Opium paste is the soul of the medicine. Used as a counter-agent, taking similarity to attract and same qi to harmonize. The reason for using opium paste instead of ash is that ash is a turbid product; any residue left in the intestines and stomach breeds drawbacks. Paste is purely a clear product, transforming into qi and moving, with absolutely no drawbacks. Gradually reducing, unknowingly, allowing old addiction and accumulated filth to be completely removed, possessing the virtue of subtle influence, opening the path to reform and self-renewal. I privately believe there is no smoking cessation prescription more stable and safe than this. Addicts, why not rise and come?
Discovery of Shocking Hot Epidemic in Jiangxi
Nanchang in Jiangxi recently discovered a shocking Hot Epidemic (Acute Warm Pathogen Epidemic). Those affected are mostly children around three years old, and over thirty have died successively. Doctors are at a loss. Mr. Shi Jimin of the First Security Team of the Provincial Capital Public Security Bureau in Jiangxi could not bear to sit idly by and mailed a letter seeking treatment. I admire his enthusiasm. Respecting Mr. Shi's wishes, I specially publish the incoming letter and outgoing prescription below.
Letter from Shi XX
To Mr. Lu Shie, great master: Respectfully writing to inform you that I have always read the "National Medicine Weekly" attached to Shanghai's "News Night Report." Its content is rich, elucidating the mysteries of medicine and pharmacology, and carefully studying the roots of diseases. It benefits the citizens and helps the masses, needing no praise. Checking recent months in Nanchang and surrounding streets, markets, and villages, a type of incurable disease has occurred. Medicine fails, and doctors consider it a terminal illness. I list the approximate symptoms below: 1. Patients are all children under three years old.
2. Rough symptoms: Initially, mild fever, mental restlessness, thirst, diarrhea with red urine, rapid and slightly surging pulse. Then, high fever, convulsions, wild waving of hands and feet, scratching mouth and tearing chest, roaring day and night in unrest, preferring to drink tea soup, appearance like normal people, tongue edges red with yellow coating in the center. Stool is greenish-yellow, like egg flower foam, urine is clear-white and slightly long, body and head arch backward like a bow (opisthotonos), slight phlegm rattle in the throat, intense heat in the head, warm limbs, rumbling sound in the abdomen with bloating, occasional vomiting, sick children often scratch towards their mouths with hands. The final symptoms become increasingly severe: dry heaving in the throat, stool yellow and thick. Frequent urination, body and voice weaker than before, breathing faint, thus dying young. Statistics show up to thirty deaths from this disease so far. But those currently ill are also numerous. Observing prescriptions from various doctors, initially clearing and releasing the exterior failed. Then, suppressing Liver, supporting Spleen, clearing Heart, and calming fright prescriptions were used, but all became worse with treatment. Some used prescriptions for Slow Convulsion or "Fu You Bian" upper prescriptions, all ineffective. Based on symptoms, the above treatments seem appropriate, yet none worked. I am not a doctor and do not understand medical principles, so I dare not discuss theories or prescriptions. Driven by public security responsibility, I must pay attention. I have always admired your profound medical skills, like a reincarnation of Qin Yueren and Hua Tuo. For this kind of pediatric disease, you can surely bring back health with skilled hands. Not daring to offend, I write to request your guidance and hope you explain what syndrome and disease this is, what prescriptions to apply, and step-by-step treatment. Only then will it be effective. If granted instruction, I will be extremely grateful and hope it is published in "National Medicine Weekly" for the public. Furthermore, I have great interest in medicine. I compile every week's "National Medicine Weekly" into volumes, but suffer from lack of teacher guidance. What methods can be thought of, or what easy-to-enter medical books should I buy to read myself? I pray for your instruction. Respectfully awaiting your peace.
Shi XX Lu Shie's Reply Letter
This is a Hot Epidemic Syndrome. Entire households and villages, thousands with the same disease, thousands with the same symptoms, like conscripted labor. Ancient name is Yi (Epidemic). Since the disease arises from accumulated heat, it is named Hot Epidemic. Summarizing the manifestations, the initial illness is merely a combination of Yangming Meridian and Fu Organ diseases. Body heat, mental restlessness, thirst, surging pulse are indeed Yangming Meridian symptoms. Diarrhea and red urine are indeed Yangming Fu Organ symptoms. For both Meridian and Fu Organ diseases, treatment should start from the Meridian. Once the Meridian disease resolves, the Fu Organ disease heals without attack. Failure to treat properly leads to internal sinking of the disease, becoming a dual transmission of Yangming and Jueyin, which becomes difficult to treat. Because the stomach opening and Mo Yuan (Membrane Source) are adjacent to the San Jiao (Triple Burner), transmission to Jueyin is very easy. High fever, thirst, head heat, warm limbs, abdominal distension, yellow tongue coating, greenish-yellow stool, none are not Yangming manifestations. Convulsions, wild waving of hands and feet, scratching mouth and tearing chest, preference for drinking, red tongue edges, opisthotonos, clear and long urine, vomiting, day and night unrest, none are not Jueyin manifestations. The method should be simultaneous clearing of Qi and Blood. Upon transmission to the Three Yin, the patient suffers exhaustion of both Yin and Yang. Even with divine medicine, rescue is difficult. Decreased heat and low voice are signs of Yang exhaustion; dry heaving is a sign of Yin exhaustion. Frequent urination indicates Yang failing to control Yin. Faint breathing indicates Qi and Yin are exhausted. Not only can it not be saved, it is too late to save. Such is my opinion. Whether appropriate, I still hope for guidance from fellow practitioners within the seas.
First Prescription: Fresh Bamboo Leaf 4 qian, Raw Gypsum 8 qian, Gan Zhong Huang (Yellow Earth from inside cow dung) 0.8 fen, Raw Anemarrhena Rhizome 3 qian, Trichosanthes Root 4 qian, Fresh Bamboo Sap 4 qian.
Second Prescription: Raw Rhubarb 3 qian, Raw Coptis Chinensis Rhizome 5 qian. Soak the above two ingredients; do not decoct. Scutellaria Root 3 qian, Anemarrhena Rhizome 4 qian, Trichosanthes Root 6 qian, Forsythia Fruit 3 qian, Fresh Rehmannia Root 1 liang (ground and mixed), Rhinoceros Horn Tip 0.5 fen (ground and mixed), Antelope Horn Tip 0.5 fen (ground and mixed), Fresh Bamboo Leaf 4 qian, Fresh Bamboo Sap 4 qian, Gan Zhong Huang 0.8 fen.
Regarding the effects after taking the above two prescriptions, please inform me. Regarding books for beginners in National Medicine, "Medical South Needle" published by World Book Bureau in Shanghai is most suitable. Reference books include the latest "Medical Consultant Encyclopedia" from World Book Bureau, and "New Talk on National Medicine" from Xiaojing Shanfang, both readable.

Opening Remarks for "Medical Forest"
"Zuan Bao" newly opens "Medical Forest," harboring three greatest hopes: 1. Hope for compatriots' understanding of National Medicine. 2. Hope for the world's understanding of our National Medicine. 3. Hope for doctors' understanding of the true face of National Medicine.
Chinese Medicine has five thousand years of history and five thousand years of experience. Yan Emperor, Yellow Emperor, and Yi Yin invented drug properties, decoctions, massage, Daoyin (guiding and pulling), acupuncture, and bian stone techniques in front. Bian Que, Cang Gong, Zhang Zhongjing, Hua Tuo, Wang Shuhe, Tao Hongjing, Wang Tao, and Sun Simiao continued the tradition behind. The Four Great Masters of Jin and Yuan, and famous masters of Ming and Qing, inherited the past and opened the future, adapting to times. Few people die young, clans multiply, population grows. Ranking first in the world, this is all the merit of medicine. Compatriots must recognize this.
Medical arts in various countries of the world change with each passing day. However, their drawback lies in relying entirely on precise instruments, blinding the wisdom of eyes and ears. Regarding the most crucial Twelve Meridians of hands and feet, Twelve Zang-Fu organs, distinction of Ying and Wei Qi and Blood, Jing-River-Shu-He acupoints, they fail to recognize them. Seeing clearly for ten thousand miles, they cannot see their own eyelashes. Busy and hurried, it is merely like holding a child to look for a child. Now, neighboring Japan already knows to study Han Medicine. I hope the world's medical forest rises quickly to catch up and recognize our National Medicine. ... Recently, doctors have changed their minds upon seeing something new, liking to learn fashionable trends. Unafraid to echo others, inevitably mixing things up. The disaster here, big ones harm the entire academic field, small ones affect personal reputation. All stem from not recognizing the true face of National Medicine. I hope doctors open their wise eyes, clear obstacles, and recognize the true face of our National Medicine.
The opening remarks are over, please see the main text below.
On Chinese and Western Medicine
Someone asked me: Since opening ports, contact with Europe and America has increased daily. New diseases occur, changing monthly and yearly. Yet our national medical art remains the old methods passed down for five thousand years. Using outdated medical art to treat newly born strange diseases is like relying on bows, swords, and cavalry to resist airplanes and artillery. How can it succeed?
I said: Human tissue organization is the same in ancient and modern times. Ancients had five senses and four limbs; moderns also only have five senses and four limbs. I have never heard that modern humans have increased to six senses, seven senses, five limbs, or six limbs. Ancients had Five Zang and Six Fu organs; moderns also only have Five Zang and Six Fu. I have never heard that modern humans have increased to six Zang, seven Zang, seven Fu, or eight Fu. Since human tissue organization is the same in ancient and modern times, although diseases come anew, our Chinese medicine only needs to clearly recognize the Six Meridians and San Jiao, distinguish Ying and Wei Qi and Blood, examine whether Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Dryness, or Fire belongs to which pathogen, and determine whether Exterior, Interior, Deficiency, or Excess belongs to which category. If diagnosis and viewing are accurate, naturally there will be absolutely no errors. Bows, swords, cavalry, airplanes, and artillery are all external objects, completely unlike internal tissue organization. Using this analogy, it can be said to be inappropriate comparison.
