Formula for treating various toxic wind-pathogens invading the body, causing lockjaw, coma with loss of consciousness, as well as severe bodily pain and restlessness, and sudden swelling of the face, eyes, hands, and feet.
Rhino Horn (Xijiao), Concha Meretricis (Beizi), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao) (each 1 liang).
The above four herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a coarse powder. Add water 2.5 sheng, place one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure of powder) of the mixture, boil to obtain 1 sheng of liquid, filter out the dregs, and administer 0.5 sheng. If the medicine is toxic, increase the dosage according to judgment. For swelling, mix with egg white and apply externally, three times daily. The dosage for the elderly and children should be adjusted appropriately; it is highly effective. It can also be prepared in larger quantities for future use.
Formula for treating cold-hernia causing severe colicky pain in the abdomen, where rogue wind enters the abdomen and attacks the five zang-organs, leading to stiffness and inability to turn over, crying out during attacks, sometimes causing retraction of the genitals and cold extremities.
Aconitum Carmichaelii Debx. Root (Wutou) (15 pieces; *Jin Gui Yao Lue* uses 5 pieces), Jujube (Dazao) (10 pieces), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (2 liang), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao) (4 liang), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin) (6 liang), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Laojiang) (1 jin).
The above six herbs are chopped. Boil the five herbs (excluding Wutou) in 7 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng, then filter out the dregs. Separately, take Wutou, remove the skin, break it into four pieces, and decoct with 2 sheng of honey over low heat until reduced by 0.5-0.6 sheng. Pour this honey-decoction into the previous herbal decoction, boil for two or three boils, then filter out the dregs. Administer 0.5 sheng, three times daily between meals. Those with strong constitutions may take 1.5 sheng. The treatment is considered effective when the patient exhibits a state resembling intoxication; if not effective, increase the dosage.
Formula for treating abdominal cramping and urgency caused by invasion of rogue wind:
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang) (4 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (1 chi length), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), Spatholobi Caulis (Guijianyu, also known as Weimao) (each the size of an egg).
The above four herbs are chopped. Decoct in 2 sheng of flowing water from the east until reduced to 1 sheng, and take in one dose.
Discussion: When Li-jie-feng (Joint-wandering Wind) remains in the body for a long time without treatment, it causes dislocation and deformity of the bone joints, evolving into epilepsy. This must be understood. Since ancient times, regardless of status, many have suffered from this, which is the toxic harm of wind. Although decoctions are used for treatment, they are not as effective as Pine Resin Paste (Songgao) or Pine Joint Wine (Songjiejiu). For those traveling who cannot afford to prepare these urgently, taking various decoctions is still better than no treatment. However, applying moxibustion (3-7 burns) to the painful area is optimal.
Formula for treating swelling of the limbs and joints that feel loose like dislocation, with pitting edema upon pressure, dizziness, shortness of breath, and a feeling of stifling oppression and nausea.
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin) (each 4 liang), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (each 3 liang), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) (each 5 liang).
The above ten herbs are chopped. Decoct in 1 dou of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into four doses: three times during the day and once at night. (*Gu Jin Lu Yan* omits Banxia, Xingren, and Chuanxiong, using Fuzi 2 pieces instead.)
