(Discussion: One section; Principles: Seven items; Prescriptions: Eighteen formulas)
Discussion states: Generally, in spring, one should take Xiao Xuming Tang (Small Continuation of Life Decoction) for five doses, and various tonifying powders for one dose each. In summer when it is very hot, one should take Shenli Tang (Kidney Drip Decoction) for three doses. In autumn, one should take pills such as Huangjing Wan (Polygonatum Pill).
People believe that Gouwen (Gelsemium elegans), a poisonous plant, can cause death, but do not believe that Huangjing (Polygonatum sibiricum) has the benefit of prolonging life. They only understand that Wugu (Five Grains) cures hunger, but do not know that Baiyao (Hundred Medicines) saves lives. They only understand how to discharge and reproduce, but cannot close and consolidate to nourish themselves. Therefore, there are Fangs (formulas) for Fu'er (taking medicinal substances for health preservation).
It is said: If one wishes to practice Fu Shi (dietary therapy and drug ingestion), one must seek what is suitable according to one's nature and physiology, examine whether cold and warm conditions are appropriate, and cannot simply follow what works for others. From youth to adulthood, the human body becomes accustomed to Wugu (Five Grains); it is impossible to completely abandon them overnight. Taking drugs for benefit is slow and subtle, showing no immediate effect of satiating hunger. However, if continued for years without cessation, the marrow will eventually become filled, and the intake of Wugu (Five Grains) will naturally cease. Nowadays, many people hope for effects within a day or morning, seeking immediate results. Before the Zang-Fu organs (Zang-Fu Organs) are filled, they abruptly stop eating grains. As Gu Qi (Grain Qi) begins to be eliminated, the medicine has not yet taken effect, yet they engage in sexual intercourse with women. Their form and spirit remain indistinguishable from ordinary worldly people. Causing harm in this way, is it not strange? The general principles of Fu Er all have a sequence. Those who do not know the method not only suffer damage in their interactions but ultimately fail to achieve the desired effect. Therefore, the major principle of Fu Er must first eliminate San Chong (Three Worms/Parasites). Once San Chong (Three Worms/Parasites) are removed, then take Cao Yao (Herbal medicines). When the efficacy of herbal medicines is well-established, then take Mu Yao (Woody plant medicines). After obtaining the efficacy of woody medicines, then take Shi Yao (Mineral medicines). Following this sequence and adapting to the properties of the medicines, everything will be stable, and one can extend longevity.
San Dou of Sheng Dihuang Zhi (Fresh Juice of Rehmanniae Radix) is decocted over a stove fire facing east using reeds until it boils three times. Er Sheng of Qing Qi (Clear Lacquer) is added, stirred with a spoon made of Jingshu (Broussonetia papyrifera twigs). The position is moved one chi daily. San Liang of Zhen Dan (Real Cinnabar/Lead Powder) is added, then moved one chi again. San Sheng of Gua Zi Mo (Powder of Benincasa hispida seeds/Winter Melon Seeds) is added, then moved one chi again. San Liang of Da Huang Mo (Powder of Rheum palmatum root and rhizome) is added. Decoct over mild heat, ensuring it does not burn. When ready to form pills, make them the size of Wu Zi (Catalpa seeds). Take one pill before meals, three times a day. Turbid blood will discharge from the nose. After thirty days, all worms will be discharged. After fifty days, hundred diseases will heal, and the complexion will become lustrous.
Another formula: Qing Qi (Clear Lacquer, Er Sheng), Da Huang (Rheum palmatum root and rhizome, Liu Liang), Wu Jing Zi (Brassica rapa seeds, San Sheng, powdered), Jiu (Wine, Yi Sheng Ban).
The above four ingredients are decocted together over mild heat until they can be formed into pills, sized like Wu Zi (Catalpa seeds). Take three pills before meals. After ten days, turbid blood will discharge from the nose. After thirty days, the worms will rot and be discharged. After fifty days, the body will become lustrous. Within one year, walking speed will be like a galloping horse, and the four limbs will feel stable and comfortable. Only after this may one take Cao Yao (Herbal medicines).
