(One Treatise, Four Prescriptions)
The treatise states: The pulse at the Cun Kou (Cun position of the radial artery) is rapid, the patient suffers from coughing, and turbid saliva and froth are discharged from the mouth. Why is this? The Master says: This is a case of Fei Wei (Lung Withered Disease). How is it contracted? The Master says: Heat pathogen in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), due to coughing, leads to Lung Withered Disease; or it results from excessive sweating, or from vomiting, or from Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst disease) causing frequent urination, or from constipation where harsh purgatives were used repeatedly, severely depleting Body Fluids (Jin Ye), thus resulting in Lung Withered Disease. Furthermore, if the Cun Kou pulse is faint or absent, yet diaphoresis (sweating-inducing treatment) is applied, the Yang pulse shows signs of exhaustion while the Yin pulse is not choppy, the Qi mechanism of the Three Jiao (Triple Burner) lingers and hesitates, entering but unable to exit; the Yin pulse is not choppy, the body feels cold, yet internally there is irritability, with excessive salivation, dry lips, and difficult urination; this is also Lung Withered Disease. This is caused by damage to Body Fluids, resulting in stools as thin as rotten melons and discharges resembling pig brain, solely due to improper sweating therapy. In this condition, the patient desires to cough but cannot, expelling dry froth; after a long time, urination becomes difficult, and the pulse is level and weak. In Lung Withered Disease, if the patient expectorates froth without coughing, they will not feel thirsty and must inevitably suffer from enuresis or frequent urination. The reason for this is that deficiency in the Upper Jiao fails to control the Lower Jiao. This belongs to Cold in the Lung, which必然ly causes dizziness. The Master says: In Lung Withered Disease with coughing and expectoration of froth, if the throat is dry and the patient desires to drink water, the condition will heal spontaneously. Breathing with an open mouth indicates shortness of breath (Duan Qi).
A prescription to warm the Zang organs and treat Lung Withered Disease, characterized by excessive saliva and froth, frequent urination, cold in the Lung, inevitable dizziness, absence of thirst (if thirsty, it belongs to Xiao Ke/Wasting-Thirst syndrome), absence of cough, and inability of the Upper Deficiency to control the Lower regarding urination.
Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, Licorice Root) - 4 liang
Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum, Dried Ginger) - 2 liang
