Whenever Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu, 白术) is combined with Stalactitum (Zhongru, 钟乳石), or when Stalactitum (Zhongru, 钟乳石) is combined with Fructus Trichosanthis (Gualou, 栝蒌), the treatment primarily affects the Lung Meridian (Lung Channel), with Qi ascending to the head and chest. If Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) agitates Zhongru (Stalactite), it causes chest fullness and shortness of breath. If Zhongru (Stalactite) agitates Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), it results in headache and eye pain. Furthermore, although Concha Meretricis (Haige, 海蛤) is not strictly contraindicated with Zhongru (Stalactite), Haige (Concha Meretricis) can agitate Zhongru (Stalactite). When Zhongru (Stalactite) is agitated, it leads to eye pain and shortness of breath. Sometimes, Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) agitating Zhongru (Stalactite) directly causes severe headache and chest fullness. However, the adverse interactions between Zhongru (Stalactite) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) are limited to these manifestations. Although the resulting symptoms differ, the treatment method remains the same. At the onset of the drug reaction, there must be a cause. When one first feels an abnormality in the body that corresponds to the aforementioned conditions, this prescription should be taken immediately.
Scallion White (Bai Cong, 葱白) (8 liang)
Fermented Soybean (Chi, 豆豉) (2 sheng)
Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) (3 liang)
Ginseng Root (Renshen, 人参) (3 liang; *Wai Tai Mi Yao* uses Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸) 1 sheng.)
Take the above four ingredients. First, boil Bai Cong (Scallion White) in 15 dou of water to make a decoction. Strain and retain 8 sheng of the liquid. Add the remaining herbs and boil until 3 sheng remain. Divide into three doses. Immediately after taking the medicine, have someone massage and shake the patient's body. The patient should chew something in their mouth, then lie supine, cover themselves with warm clothing, and induce sweating. After sweating, remove the clothing and drink the decoction. Once the heat subsides, the body will feel cold; consume only washed rice and dried meat jerky. If this prescription does not resolve the condition, administer Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) again.
Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) (3 liang)
Cinnamon Twig Heart (Guixin, 桂心) (2 liang)
Fermented Soybean (Chi, 豆豉) (2 sheng)
Scallion White (Bai Cong, 葱白) (8 liang)
Take the above four ingredients together as described above. If the condition resolves but residual pathogenic heat remains in the Lungs, administer Guixin Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
Cinnamon Twig Heart (Guixin,
Ophiopogon Tuber (Maimendong, 麦门冬) (3 liang each)
Ginseng Root (Renshen, 人参)
Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) (2 liang each)
Fermented Soybean (Chi, 豆豉) (2 sheng)
Scallion White (Bai Cong, 葱白) (8 liang)
Take the above six ingredients together as described previously. (Note: This prescription differs slightly in dosage from the Maimendong Tang used for subsequent cases involving skin eruptions.)
Sulfur (Huangqi, 硫黄) interacts with Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng, 防风) and also with Asarum Root (Xixin, 细辛). Its treatment primarily targets the Spleen and Kidneys, with Qi descending to the waist and legs. If Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) agitates Huangqi (Sulfur), it causes irritability, fever, leg pain, lower back pain, erratic mood swings, or uncontrollable diarrhea. Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) and Xixin (Asarum Root) can agitate Huangqi (Sulfur), whereas Huangqi (Sulfur) cannot agitate them. Take this prescription at the first sign of the drug reaction.
Eucommia Bark (Duzhong, 杜仲) (3 liang)
Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi,
Licorice Root (Gancao,
Apricot Kernel / Plum Seed Kernel (Liheren, 李核仁) (2 liang each)
Prepared Fermented Soybean (Xiangchi, 香豉) (2 sheng)
Gardenia Seed (Zhiziren, 栀子仁) (14 seeds)
Take the above six ingredients together as described above. If the condition does not resolve, administer Damainu Tang (Barley Sprout Decoction).
