The patient's pulse is rapid, with no fever but slight irritability, a silent demeanor desiring to lie down, sweating. Within three or four days of onset, the eyes turn red like those of a turtledove; after seven or eight days, the corners of the eyes turn yellow-black. If the patient can eat, it indicates that pus has formed. The prescription for treating this condition: Soak San Sheng (three *sheng*, approx. 0.6 L) of Xiaochidou (Red Bean), allow sufficient sprouts to grow, then dry them. Add Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) at Liang San (three *liang*, approx. 45 g), grind into powder. Take Fang Cun Bi (a square-inch measure, approx. 3-5 g) with Jiangshui (fermented grain water), three times daily, until cured.
The manifestation of this disease should not be treated with purgation or moxibustion. When fire pathogen becomes an evil, blood scatters within the vessels. Injury to the vessels may be tolerable, but injury to the Zang organs is severe. The Jing-Well and Ying-Spring points become more swollen, exuding yellow fluid; the He-Sea points suffer external ulceration, flesh rots into abscesses/pus. This is called "Fire Ju" (Fire Carbuncle), caused by medical error. Rapid pulse contraindicates moxibustion. Fire pathogen causes irritability; due to deficiency chasing excess, blood moves in the vessels. Although fire qi is subtle, its internal attack is powerful, scorching bones and injuring sinews, making blood difficult to restore. Treatment should focus on Xie Xin Tang (Drain the Epigastrium Decoction). Xie Xin Tang also treats persistent dysentery, abdominal hardness with vomiting, and borborygmus. Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome, half *sheng*), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) (each three *liang*), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) (one *liang*), Gancao (Licorice Root) (three *liang*), Dazao (Jujube Fruit) (twelve pieces). The above seven herbs are coarsely crushed, boiled in one *dou* (approx. 2 L) of water to yield six *sheng*, taken as one *sheng* per dose, three times daily.
(Three Treatises, Five Syndromes) Thirty-four Prescriptions, Acupuncture Charts. The treatise states: There are five types of jaundice: Huanghan (Yellow Sweat), Huangdan (Jaundice), Gu Dan (Grain Jaundice), Jiu Dan (Wine Jaundice), and Nv Lao Dan (Female Labor Jaundice). Huanghan presents with slight swelling of the body and limbs, chest fullness, no thirst, and sweat resembling yellow cypress juice. It is largely caused by entering water immediately after profuse sweating. Huangdan presents with complete yellowing of the body and face, like an orange peel. It results from sudden heat followed by a cold bath, trapping heat in the stomach, or consumption of raw cucumbers causing miasma. If it transforms into Hei Dan (Black Jaundice), mortality is high. Gu Dan presents with dizziness after eating, palpitations, red spots, yellow-black discoloration, caused by drunkenness exposed to wind and cold. Nv Lao Dan presents with yellowing of body and eyes, fever and aversion to cold, lower abdominal fullness and urgency, difficult urination, caused by excessive labor and heat during sexual intercourse followed by immediate immersion in water. These should be treated according to the subsequent prescriptions. Huanghan disease presents with body swelling, fever, sweating without thirst, resembling Feng Shui (Wind Water edema). Sweat stains clothes yellow like cypress juice, and the pulse is deep. How is it contracted? This disease is contracted when one enters water for bathing while sweating, allowing water to enter through the sweat pores.
