Among the aforementioned one hundred and ninety-seven types, there are mutual restrictions and guiding relationships; the rest have none, so they are not recorded in full.
Someone asked: "Ancients used minimal amounts of medicine, with light dosages, yet cured many diseases; observing your prescriptions, they are not without complexity and heaviness, and dosages are large, yet the cure rate does not match the ancients. Why?" The answer was: "In ancient times, the days were long, medicines remained in the soil for extended periods, nurturing themselves naturally, resulting in authentic and potent flavors. The people had few desires and possessed balanced constitution, contracting mild illnesses that were easy to treat. Today, the era is short, medicinal potency is light and deficient, people are cunning and deceitful, contracting severe illnesses that are difficult to treat. For mild illnesses, less medication is required; for severe illnesses, more medication is needed. This is merely one aspect of medicine, what is there to wonder at? Furthermore, ancient physicians harvested the herbs themselves, drying them in shade or sun according to proper methods, and selected medicines based on their geographical origin. Thus, ten out of ten cases were cured. Modern physicians only know pulse diagnosis and prescription writing, neglecting the timing of herb collection. They are unaware of the origin, soil conditions, freshness, age, and tonifying/purgative properties of the herbs. Therefore, treating ten cases and curing fewer than five is truly due to this. Those who prescribe must pay close attention and repeatedly deliberate on the medications to ensure efficacy. Blindly imitating the ancients will only lead to self-deception. Future students must study these points carefully."
For all Shi Ying (Fluorite), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), Xiong Huang (Realgar), Liu Huang (Sulfur), etc., they must be bright, clear, fresh in color, and pure in texture to be considered good. Otherwise, they cause dryness of the body, fever, dry mouth, and death.
For all herbal and mineral drugs, the land of origin must be solid, and the flavor and qi must be strong; otherwise, the disease will not be cured.
For Ye Lang Du (Stellerae Radix), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus), aged ones are preferred; for the rest, only fine and fresh ones are required.
