[Original Text to Process]
Today, while decocting the Ginger and Jujube Decoction (Jiang Zao Tang), the fire was slightly more intense than usual. After a short while, heat surged out, greatly differing from other days. The aluminum pot is slightly larger than a palm, perfectly suitable for decocting small doses. Usually, steam escapes mostly from the spout, allowing one to steam hands and face; today, however, no air came out of the spout, which puzzled me. Lifting the lid to look inside, I saw steam rising vigorously with bubbles churning; covering it again stopped the airflow. I then reduced the fire intensity, but the air still did not come out. I then blew into the spout, and only then did the air disperse as on normal days. Reflecting on this, the bubbles were surging and congested the pot's opening internally, preventing the air from exiting. Reducing the fire meant new bubbles did not form; blowing internally allowed ventilation, and only then could the heat dissipate externally. This is analogous to phlegm-heat in the lungs (Fei Zhong Tan Re). Not only does cold pathogen (Han Qi) cause blockage, but heat congestion (Re Yong) does as well; I now believe this. Thus, "penetrating heat and transforming qi" (Tou Re Zhuan Qi) is also a wonderful method. If applied appropriately, its effect is immediate like a drumstick striking a drum; however, it must not be used recklessly. All methods are similar to this.
Five: Discussing Nourishment
Explanation of the Way of Nourishing Life in Spring
Original Text from Neijing:
The three months of spring are called "Fa Chen" (Sprouting and Renewal). Heaven and earth generate together, and all things flourish. Sleep late and rise early, walk widely in the courtyard, let hair hang loose and body relax, to allow the will to grow. Promote growth and do not kill; give and do not take; reward and do not punish. This corresponds to the Qi of Spring, the way of nourishing life. To go against it injures the Liver, causing cold transformations in summer, and provides little for the nourishment of growth.
Vernacular Explanation:
Spring corresponds to Yin, Mao, and Chen months, i.e., the first, second, and third lunar months. This season is called "Fa Chen," marking the beginning of the year. "Fa Chen" refers to the trend of long-stored energy reaching outward. Heaven and earth and all things are thriving, presenting a scene full of vitality. At this time, humans correspond with the Qi of heaven and earth. One should gradually reduce sleep, sleeping late and rising early. Upon rising, walk proudly in the front yard, with hair disheveled and wearing loose clothes, to allow the spirit/will to reach outward and undertake tasks courageously. At this time, whether for oneself or others, wishes should be satisfied as much as possible, so that growth, craving, and giving can receive corresponding returns, making all desires fulfilled. This reflects the benevolent and life-giving nature of Spring Qi, belonging to the way of nourishing life. If one goes against it, the Liver is injured. In summer, fire cannot transform properly, causing internal cold in the Heart Qi, and resources for summer growth become insufficient.
Explanation of the Way of Nourishing Growth in Summer
Original Text from Neijing:
The three months of summer are called "Fan Xiu" (Flourishing and Beauty). Heaven and earth Qi intersect, and all things flower and bear fruit. Sleep late and rise early, do not dislike the sun; keep the will free from anger, allow essence and brilliance to become beautiful, allow Qi to vent, as if what one loves is outside. This corresponds to the Qi of Summer, the way of nourishing growth. To go against it injures the Heart, causing intermittent fevers/malaria in autumn, providing little for autumn gathering, and leading to severe illness at Winter Solstice.
Vernacular Explanation:
Summer corresponds to Si, Wu, and Wei months, i.e., the fourth, fifth, and sixth lunar months. This season is called "Fan Xiu." "Fan" means proliferation and lushness; "Xiu" means essence and Qi reaching outward.
At this time, Earth Qi rises to meet Heaven Qi, and all things flower and bear fruit. Humans correspond with Summer Qi. One should sleep late and rise early, accept sunlight as much as possible, and not overly crave shade. One should keep emotions smooth and avoid郁结 (stagnation) turning into anger. Like flowers blooming and fruits forming, allow vital Qi to reach outward. As if what one loves is outside, go out early and return late as much as possible.
This is the law of correspondence between Summer Qi and the human body, the way of nourishing growth. Failing to conform to Summer's growth injures the Heart. In autumn, it manifests as alternating cold and heat diseases, providing less essence for autumn gathering, leading to severe internal deficiency illness in winter.
Explanation of the Way of Nourishing Gathering in Autumn
Original Text from Neijing:
The three months of autumn are called "Rong Ping" (Containment and Peace). Heaven Qi becomes urgent, Earth Qi becomes clear. Sleep early and rise early, rise with chickens; keep the will peaceful to ease Autumn's punishment, gather Spirit and Qi to make Autumn Qi level, do not let the will go outward to keep Lung Qi clear. This corresponds to the Qi of Autumn, the way of nourishing gathering. To go against it injures the Lungs, causing undigested food diarrhea in winter, and provides little for storage.
Vernacular Explanation:
Autumn corresponds to Shen, You, and Xu months, i.e., the seventh, eighth, and ninth lunar months. This season is called "Rong Ping." "Rong" is the virtue of Earth, representing bearing things with thick virtue; "Ping" is the momentum of Metal, representing a calm and harmonious mind. "Rong" implies ample tolerance; "Ping" implies the spirit is not restless.
In terms of Heaven and Earth Qi, this season is characterized by descent exceeding ascent, and gathering exceeding sprouting. Heaven Qi descends, Earth Qi gathers inward, appearing clear outside—this is what is meant by "clear autumn sky and crisp air."
Humans in this season should sleep early and rise early, synchronizing with chickens. Keep the Will of the Kidneys (Shen Zhi) peaceful and stable to moderate the肃杀 (severe/cutting) nature of Autumn Qi (following Water Qi generation). Let the Spirit/Qi of the Heart gather and hide internally to make Autumn Qi peaceful (following Fire Qi inheritance). Do not let the will show outwardly, to keep Lung Qi clear.
This is the law of correspondence between Autumn Qi and the human body, the way of nourishing gathering. Failing to conform to Autumn's gathering injures the Lungs. If Metal is injured, it cannot generate Water; Kidney Qi does not store, leading to undigested food diarrhea in winter where food passes undigested, making the essence provided for storage scarce.
Explanation of the Way of Nourishing Storage in Winter
Original Text from Neijing:
The three months of winter are called "Bi Cang" (Closing and Storing). Water freezes, earth cracks; do not disturb Yang. Sleep early and rise late, wait for sunlight. Let the will be like hiding or concealing, as if having private thoughts, as if already possessing what is desired. Remove cold and seek warmth, do not let skin sweat, causing Qi to be frequently lost. This corresponds to the Qi of Winter, the way of nourishing storage. To go against it injures the Kidneys, causing flaccidity and cold limbs in spring, and provides little for generation.
Vernacular Explanation:
Winter corresponds to Hai, Zi, and Chou months, i.e., the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth lunar months. This season is called "Bi Cang." "Bi" means gathering; it represents Yin Qi gathering inward and Yang not scattering outward. "Cang" means storing; it represents Yang Qi gathering inward and Yin Qi gathering outward. Yang Qi enters Yin, hiding internally. In the Hexagrams, this is Kan (Water), outer Yin and inner Yang, exactly the time when "hidden dragons do not act," nurturing essence and accumulating strength.
In this season, cold water freezes and the ground cracks, a scene of closed vitality. Humans must not disturb the storage of Yang Qi. Daily routine should involve sleeping early and rising late, waiting until the sun rises before getting up to move. Let one's will hide internally, like lurking or concealing, not showing outwardly, like a secret privacy not shown to others, like already obtaining what one wants so no longer seeking outside. Must pay attention to keeping warm, staying away from cold Qi, approaching warm Qi, not letting skin leak into wind-cold, causing already stored Yang Qi to scatter outward.
This is the way of nourishing storage corresponding to the Qi mechanism of the three winter months. If one cannot conform and goes against it, Kidney Yang Qi is damaged. In spring, cold water cannot generate Wood, tendons lose nourishment, becoming flaccid and relaxed, and the essence provided for generation is insufficient.
Further Discussion on Modern Nourishment Suitability for Using Fire
The key to nourishing life is emptiness and stillness for preservation. Indeed. But modern people cannot quiet down, so they must constantly replenish动力 (drive/power). This is inevitable in an industrial society, nothing can be done about it. Drive is Fire. Generating fire is Energy. Thus industry values energy most, and human life is the same.
Treating modern people is not treating True Persons of antiquity. True persons of antiquity followed Yin and Yang, combined with techniques and numbers, avoided evil winds externally, and guarded spirit internally. They had no strange diseases, were not burdened externally, why would they need the power of herbs and stones!
Nourishing life without using fire (meaning preservation/storage) is guarding stillness. The guard of the still is merely to keep this spark of life burning continuously, absolutely not extinguishing the fire. If fire extinguishes, the person dies; this is an unchanging principle since ancient times.
People today move much and rest little, often dissipating rather than storing inwardly, often leading to invasion of Yin pathogens. If one does not replenish energy to continue the spark of life, how can the fire of life burn continuously? Therefore, those in modern times who wish to nourish life and eliminate disease must pay repeated attention to the character "Fire".
Burning oil to extend daylight, oil exhausted and lamp withered. This is not the way to use fire.
Adding oil to continue the flame, slight brightness unceasing. This is the way to use fire.
Yang transforms into Qi, Yin forms shape. Yang generates, Yin grows; Yang kills, Yin stores. The Classics say: For those with insufficient shape, warm them with Qi; for the weary, warm them. Thus, nourishing Yin is nourishing Yang; cultivating Water is precisely storing Fire. If fire extinguishes, vitality ceases; if Yin is excessive, Yang transformation stagnates. Transformation and generation fail, shape and spirit are both damaged, Yin and Yang both perish, Water and Fire separate. What talk of vital Qi remains!
Simple Diet and Routine Disease Adjustment Methods
Morning
After waking, rub hands until hot, cover eyes with them to make them hot, then get up.
1. Ginger, Jujube, and Brown Sugar Water (Must use):
Ginger slices: 4 pieces
Large red dates: 3 pieces (split open)
Brown sugar: 1 spoonful
Use an aluminum pot with one and a half bowls of water to boil ginger and dates until one bowl remains. When boiling, use the medicinal vapor to steam face and hands, and inhale it. After decocting, eat the ginger first, then the dates, then dissolve the brown sugar in water, mix well, and drink. Take at 7 AM. Breakfast should avoid milk and fried foods. This drink can replace breakfast; if replacing breakfast, use five dates.
Noon
2. Angelica and Longan Drink (For those with insufficient spirit/poor sleep):
Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root): 7 grams
Longan Aril: 2 pieces (shelled)
Steep in boiling water, one cup. Take half an hour before lunch (11 AM).
Afternoon
3. Cinnamon and Goji Berry Drink (For those with sore back/weakness):
Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark): 1 gram
Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry): 6 grams
Steep in boiling water, one cup. Take half an hour before dinner (5 PM). Dinner should avoid greasy and acidic foods.
Evening
4. One fresh Hawthorn (seed removed), or one candied hawthorn stick.
Chew thoroughly, swallow when the mouth feels sour. Take before bed.
Stand facing South and back to North before sleep. Plug both ears with index fingers until airtight. Breathe evenly and finely 60 times. Then rub hands until hot and cover lower back to make it hot. Then go to bed to sleep.
Daily
5. Five Seeds Tea Substitute:
Xing Ren (Apricot Seed): 4 grams
Tao Ren (Peach Seed): 3 grams
Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed): 5 grams
Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphus Seed): 2 grams
Yi Zhi Ren (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit): 1 gram
Steep in boiling water. Drink this water when thirsty during the day. Best to take one cup at 9 AM and one cup at 3 PM.
Notes
Try to get sunlight exposure for over half an hour daily. Combine work and rest, do not overdo it.
Prohibit irregular diet, irregular routine, sexual exhaustion damaging essence, and other chronic self-harming behaviors.
Adjustment period is one month; can be maintained year-round.
Appendix
Futai Five-Element Vegetable Soup:
(Family portion) Carrots: 2 liang, Potatoes: 5 liang, Tofu: 4 liang, Shiitake Mushrooms (replace with Kelp next day, alternate two kinds): 1 liang, Chinese Cabbage Green Leaves: 3 liang
(One person portion) Carrot: 1 root, Potato (one large or two small), Tofu: 1/4 block, Shiitake Mushrooms (or Kelp, four palm-sized slices): 6 pieces, Chinese Cabbage Green Leaves: 3 leaves

Eat one bowl of vegetables and drink one bowl of soup at dinner. Whole family eats together. Do not eat staple food.
Instructions
All above methods can be used simultaneously or chosen individually. If time is truly inconvenient, it is recommended to try using formulas 1 and 5 along with the Five-Element Vegetable Soup for nourishment.
2005 Luck and Disaster Epidemic (Lung Disease) Prediction
Yi You Year, Shao Shang Metal Transport. You itself belongs to Metal, and is also Dry Metal Qi, known as Tai Yi Tian Fu.
First half of the year, Yang Ming Dry Metal governs Heaven, supplementing the weakness of the transport. Second half of the year, Shao Yin Ruler Fire governs Earth, so Fire Qi comes to oppress.
First Qi: Host Qi Jue Yin Wind Wood, Guest Qi Tai Yin Damp Earth. Wood oppresses Earth, Metal loses source of transformation.
Second Qi: Host Qi Shao Yin Ruler Fire, Guest Qi Shao Yang Minister Fire. Two Fires combine brightness, already meaning attack on Central Transport.
Third Qi: Host Qi Shao Yang Minister Fire, Guest Qi Yang Ming Dry Metal. Host wins Guest. Fortunately, it is still under the management of Dry Metal governing Heaven, known as Minor Reverse.
Fourth Qi: Host Qi Tai Yin Damp Earth, Guest Qi Tai Yang Cold Water. Again Host wins Guest, Reverse. Earth and Water clash, Fire power slightly declines.
Fifth Qi (Sept 21 - Nov 21): Host Qi Yang Ming Dry Metal, Guest Qi Jue Yin Wind Wood. Host wins Guest, Major Reverse. Must be Wood's son, Ruler Fire governing Earth, coming to restore. Known as "Evil Qi transformation degree" and "Disaster in Palace Seven." Palace Seven is due West. In affairs, industrial objects; in humans, Lungs. Image of Fire overcoming Metal. At that time, fear Western "SARS" reigniting, unable to save itself. Medicines and foods should be salty and cold items; formulas should be sought in the Yang Ming chapter.
Sixth Qi: Host Qi Tai Yang Cold Water, Guest Qi Shao Yin Ruler Fire. Guest Qi again won by Host Qi. Water saves Metal, Son saves Mother. Known as "Heat transformation and Cold transformation victory and restoration are the same." At that time, Fire Qi calms, Metal Qi recovers. Furthermore, next year Tai Yu comes first to govern Heaven to resolve the siege, can have no worries.
Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth Qi are all Host winning Guest, known as Reverse. Reverse generates change. Tai Yi Tian Fu is Noble Person. Classics say: Those among Noble People, their illness is sudden death. Sudden death, is it related to Yang Ming Urgent Purge Syndrome?
Principle: Metal Transport is insufficient, so Fire Qi comes to oppress. Disaster in West, disease in Lungs, Stomach, Large Intestine. There must be restoration after victory, decline after prosperity, ultimately Water Qi comes to restore.
Must-Read for Nourishing Illness and Taking Medicine
When illness comes, there is slow and fast, light and heavy. Fast and heavy sometimes originates from light, one dose can cure; light and slow sometimes originates from heavy, hard to recover in three months. Root and branch differ, deficiency and excess vary, do not be confused by superficial phenomena.
Illnesses come from outside or generate inside. Outside comes from interference of Six Qi. Inside is mostly disturbed by Seven Emotions. Also caused by irregular diet, irregular routine, ignorant reckless actions, self-destruction. Responsibility lies with oneself. Only the one who tied the bell can untie it. Gain and loss depend entirely on oneself, cannot entrust to doctors.
Whether external contraction or internal injury, medication is merely to quell chaos, like using troops. Once chaos is pacified, construction is needed. Cannot maintain military rule long-term, otherwise resources inevitably deplete.
Laozi says: Weapons are instruments of ill omen, used only when necessary, tranquility is best. Qibo says: Tranquility and emptiness, True Qi follows, Spirit guards internally, how can illness arise? Therefore, medication should stop when appropriate. Treatment is not more than 30%, 70% lies in nourishment. Cannot attack too heavily. Exhausting military force, killing too heavily, inevitably damages vital Qi. Governing country and treating disease share this taboo, must be cautious!
Therefore, premise of treating disease requires patient self-nourishment first, otherwise medicine is hard to be effective, even if effective, hard to last. Key to nourishment is below: Three Less One More, patient decides for self:
Speaking much leads to exhaustion quickly, nurture Qi with silence (Speak less); Long looking damages Blood, nurture Blood with closing eyes (Look less); Much thinking confuses Spirit, nurture Spirit with stillness (Think less); Reckless action damages Essence, nurture Essence with sleep (Sleep more). Especially avoid sexual exhaustion, masturbation, lustful thoughts, etc., behaviors that damage Essence and Qi.
Simultaneously, diet has moderation. Avoid raw, cold, greasy, scallion, garlic, leek, salt, etc., substances that drain Minister Fire and break stored Essence. Each meal should not be too full. Routine has constancy, sleep cannot be lacking.
If one can follow above, taking medicine will surely be effective. Following this to nourish, can achieve longevity. Otherwise, even if medicine is ineffective, or effective briefly, it is not that medicine has no merit, responsibility lies in patient refusing to cooperate. Such medication wastes resources, helps nothing, vainly consumes doctor's spirit, and damages patient's energy, what benefit is there! Patient should think thrice before taking, do not be muddled and rash, deceive oneself and others, desire benefit but suffer loss, try to be clever but fail, result contrary to wish. Beware! Beware!
Written to Those Who Do Not Store Essence in Winter
Spring steps are near.
Classics say: If one does not store essence in Winter, one will definitely contract Warm disease in Spring.
This time this year is Sixth Qi, Host Qi Tai Yang Cold Water, Guest Qi Jue Yin Wind Wood. Wood Qi drains Water, Kidney Essence loses storage. Wind Wood comes first, image of Jue Yin non-compliance. Jue Yin non-compliance, then Minister Fire must move recklessly.
Those not storing essence easily manifest obvious image of Water not nourishing Wood currently, such as creating trouble out of nothing, speaking much and easily angered, provoking trouble, contradicting and cursing, etc. Males also easily show early prostatitis symptoms: frequent urination, lower abdominal distension/pain, sexual desire moving, but often failing halfway. "To go against it injures Kidney, Spring causes flaccidity and cold limbs" shows early signs.
Person must have Left Guan Chi pulse large and wiry, or rapid feeling, Cun pulse instead does not rise. Right Chi floats wiry and thin, slightly tight, deep pressing is empty. Right Guan floating press wiry, deep press tight, has exterior rejection momentum, Cun pulse instead sinks firm and slippery.
Minister Fire not in position, Ruler Fire not bright. Pivot mechanism does not turn, opening and closing unfavorable. Righteous Qi floats and scatters, Evil Qi runs rampant. If not decided early, fear difficult to escape disaster of Palace Seven.
Advice: Mend the fold after sheep is lost, evening is not too late. Sleep early rise late, wait for sunlight. Sleep alone far from bedroom, ponder disputes less. Spirit guards internally, do not be arrogant.
Formula: Gui Fu Di Huang Wan (Cinnamon and Aconite Rehmannia Pill) plus Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang (Peony and Licorice Decoction). (If chest pain and dry cough, add Sheng Mai San).
