Diabetes mellitus is a disorder of visceral metabolic function. As is well known, sugar (glucose) serves as the energy source for the human body, and its taste is sweet. From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the metabolism of sugar is related to the Spleen and Stomach (Zang-Fu organs responsible for digestion and transformation). This is because the Spleen and Stomach belong to the Earth element, and the flavor associated with Earth is sweet. The Stomach governs the reception of food, while the Spleen governs transportation and transformation. Through the pivoting action of Middle Qi (the vital energy of the middle jiao), clear Yang ascends and turbid Yin descends, allowing the internal environment of the body to renew itself by eliminating the old and promoting the new. Therefore, TCM theory considers the Spleen and Stomach to be the "Postnatal Foundation" (the basis of acquired constitution), whereas the "Prenatal Foundation" lies in the Kidney.
Furthermore, the Spleen governs the control of blood within the vessels. Since the Spleen Meridian connects with the Heart Meridian, the Spleen also plays a role in regulating the circulation of blood to some extent. (It is correct to say that the power of the Heart alone is insufficient to drive blood circulation; actually, the primary driving force originates in the Kidney, transmission occurs through the Liver and Spleen, distribution is managed by the Heart, and regulation is handled by the Lungs. The mechanism of blood circulation is interconnected with all five Zang organs.) The power of the Spleen derives partly from the ascending force of the Liver and Kidney, and partly from the energy transformed from dietary intake. The main function of the Spleen is to convert sugars from food into energy and transport them into the blood, becoming the body's motive force. This is analogous to burning coal into fire, evaporating water into steam, and converting steam into mechanical power—a principle similar to that of Western steam engines. Currently, due to dysfunction in the Spleen's transformative capacity, sugar cannot be normally converted into energy but instead remains in the blood, becoming a burden. Consequently, blood tests will show elevated blood glucose levels, leading to what Western medicine calls diabetes mellitus.
Originally, the Spleen governs the ascent of clear Qi, transmitting the primal motive force from the Liver and Kidney to the Heart. However, due to insufficient ascending power, it fails to push the refined essences from food upward to transform into energy. Instead, nutrients sink downward into the Kidneys and are excreted via urine. At this point, urine tests will show elevated urine sugar, making the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus accurate. However, limited by theoretical constraints, Western medicine cannot understand the root cause preventing the normal conversion of sugar into energy (analogous to water failing to vaporize into steam), and thus cannot cure the disease fundamentally. Fortunately, they discovered insulin. Insulin is naturally produced during the Spleen's process of transforming and transporting refined essences; it is the material manifestation of Spleen function. The only method Western medicine uses to treat diabetes is injecting synthetic insulin into the human body. Insulin can lower blood glucose and alleviate symptoms in the short term. However, it cannot cure the disease fundamentally because insulin cannot be self-generated, requiring continuous injection. Long-term injection not only causes the complete loss of normal Spleen function but also damages Liver and Kidney functions, ultimately leading to complications such as gangrene of the extremities, renal failure, and blindness—severe adverse outcomes that remain incurable. Thus, when Western medicine states that diabetes is a lifelong, terminal disease, this is indeed true within their framework.
As mentioned earlier, the root cause of this disease lies in the destruction of the Spleen's function of ascending clear Qi. The reason for the failure of Spleen Qi to ascend lies further in the failure of Kidney Yang to ascend (analogous to an internal combustion engine having a fire too small to ignite the coal). Yang Qi governs ascending (because heat is light and rises), while Yin Qi governs descending (because cold is heavy and sinks); this is an obvious principle. The failure of Kidney Qi to ascend is often due to Kidney Yang being injured by cold pathogens. This is logically sound and observable in clinical signs. By integrating the four diagnostic methods (inspection, auscultation/olfaction, inquiry, and palpation), clues will naturally emerge. Therefore, I state that early-stage diabetes, which has not yet affected the Middle Jiao, can be cured using Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill from the Golden Cabinet). This is because Shen Qi Wan is an excellent formula for warming and tonifying Kidney Yang (akin to stoking the fire in the furnace).
As for the severe conditions seen in mid-to-late stages, these result from the accumulation of prolonged medication errors and have damaged the fundamental roots. However, if medications are administered correctly and according to proper principles, restoration is possible, though it requires at least three to six months. If recovery is not achieved within a year, complete restoration becomes difficult.
Under the influence of famous physicians like Shi Jinmo, contemporary TCM practitioners generally adopt the treatment principle of "nourishing Yin and descending Fire" for diabetes. This further injures the already compromised Spleen Yang and Kidney Yang, akin to adding frost to snow or compounding illness upon illness. How can such an approach cure the disease? Consequently, for these incompetent practitioners, diabetes becomes a terminal disease, damaging the reputation of TCM and objectively harming patients even today. Alas! The disasters caused by human cognitive confusion are formidable!
On the Similarity Between Western Medical Theory and Zeno's Paradoxes in the Treatment of Diabetes and Hypertension
The proposal that modern medical cognition resembles Zeno's paradoxes is based on the fact that modern medical theory largely confuses the distinction between motion and stillness, leading to a series of methodological errors. This results in numerous irreversible side effects during treatment, causing undue harm and suffering to patients. This likely relates to the mechanistic epistemology of the human body derived from anatomical studies of corpses in modern medicine.
Below, taking diabetes and hypertension—conditions most perplexing to Western medicine—as examples, I will illustrate the essential reasons why Western medical treatment fails to truly resolve these issues:
Western medical theory posits that the primary contradiction in diabetes manifests as elevated blood glucose, leading to clinical hypoglycemic therapy. In reality, this so-called "blood sugar lowering" treatment ignores from the outset that blood glucose levels are inherently dynamic. The body constantly consumes glucose, and the transition from high to low levels is a natural law. The so-called elevation of blood glucose does not mean there is an absolute increase in glucose itself, but rather that the process of converting glucose into energy and bodily motive force is delayed. It is the inability of the body's thermal energy to timely convert glucose into power. Correct treatment should assist the body in converting glucose into motive force, i.e., "transforming sugar," rather than clearing the seemingly increased static glucose through so-called hypoglycemic therapy. Since the source of motive force is already insufficient, reducing energy supply further inevitably leads to increased heaviness, weakness, and exhaustion in diabetic patients, eventually causing complications and gradual loss of organ function.
Applying the same logic to hypertension, elevated blood pressure is originally caused by poor circulation of Qi and Blood and local blockage, resulting in increased pressure. This is similar to congestion caused by narrow channels unable to disperse crowds promptly. The correct treatment method should be to help Qi and Blood restore normal circulation mechanisms and remove obstacles hindering flow. However, Western medicine adopts vasodilation and reduction of blood volume, methods entirely unrelated to the pathology. This is no longer merely treating symptoms while ignoring the root cause. Setting aside the renal damage caused by diuretics (reducing blood volume), long-term vasodilation creates a false appearance of temporarily lowered blood pressure. In reality, it fails to restore normal circulation, instead continuously destroying vascular elasticity and weakening contractility. Ultimately, under persistent high pressure, vessels rupture, causing modern medical tragedies where "vessels die before the person" (such as cerebral hemorrhage).
In understanding these two diseases, Western medical theory ignores the objective dynamic factors causing abnormalities in blood glucose and blood pressure, instead adopting symptomatic treatment aimed solely at restoring static indicators. This is equivalent to forcibly propping up a bedridden patient to stand, attempting to prove health through standing—it is a self-deceptive absurdity. If support is removed, the unsupported patient will inevitably collapse due to weakness. Such treatment does not truly relieve suffering nor eliminate the disease etiology; it merely attempts to create a static reference (like standing) to falsely demonstrate the absence of disease. Its essence is deception, deceiving both the patient and oneself.
This is the similarity between modern medical epistemology/methodology and Zeno's paradoxes.
Western Medicine Cannot Yet Be Considered True Medicine
Some claim that TCM believes it has "no obligation to accept testing by mainstream science." I ask: since chemical methods have been developed, do humans feel ashamed to remain as beings of natural attributes? Is it considered unscientific? Do they feel it necessary to undergo re-processing via chemical methods? What reason do these people have to despise natural methods so much?
Others claim TCM believes it has "no obligation to express itself in ways understandable to the general public." I ask: Are the explanations used in modern physics understandable to the general public? If the public cannot understand them, does modern physics lose its right to exist?
Scientific expression methods are inherently incomprehensible to the masses. Can you claim molecular formulas are understood by everyone? On what grounds do you assume your comprehension represents the general public's level of understanding?
Others claim TCM's system "cannot be pushed forward from the start." If it cannot progress, how is it that TCM methods continue to treat diseases unsolved by modern medicine today? Is your basis for this statement mere assumption? Is this your scientific spirit?
Yes, many TCM theories require revision and subversion, such as Liu Hejian's "Theory of Heat and Fire Pathogenesis" and Zhu Danxi's "Theory of Excess Yang and Deficient Yin." But these are internal matters of TCM; outsiders have no right to interfere. Can we accept a blacksmith guiding a carpenter's technical improvements based on his own trade knowledge?
Although science continues to develop, nature remains nature. All natural products continue to exist in their original forms. Despite destruction by science, they persist tenaciously in their own ways. Humans are products of nature, not chemical syntheses. Chemical intervention in natural objects proceeds by destroying nature, and the same applies to humans.
Therefore, drugs synthesized by Western medicine using chemical methods inevitably have side effects on the human body. To this day, Western medicine continually discovers that many of its drugs are fatally harmful. Many hematology patients are innocent victims of this. Does this not indicate that Western medicine entered a dangerous quagmire from its inception?
Thousands of years have passed. Although human food varieties have changed slightly, humans still eat with their mouths, and digestive/excretory methods have not essentially changed with the advent of chemistry. Only the types of human diseases have increased due to chemical destruction. Judging solely by the human body, has chemistry brought more welfare or disaster?
Admittedly, Western medicine excels in detailed observations in human anatomy, which is commendable. However, it lacks understanding of Qi and vessel circulation mechanisms that lack anatomical significance, a point that cannot be ignored. Objectively speaking, Western medicine has strengths in surgical problems requiring operation, but for internal medicine, due to fundamental defects in etiological epistemology, practice remains blind.
Since Western medicine cannot fundamentally recognize the causes of human illness (often seeing only the results of disease rather than causes), in a sense, Western medicine cannot yet be considered true medicine. It is at best a composite discipline combining anatomy, chemistry, biology, bacteriology, etc. Only under the guidance of TCM theory, which possesses a complete and true understanding of life sciences, can Western medical practice gain relatively clear direction and achieve true medical significance.
Regarding Individual Cases
Humans first exist as individuals, except in cases of conjoined twins. This determines that human diseases also exist individually; even epidemic infectious diseases manifest differently in individual patients. Therefore, specific treatments for individual diseases are invariably case-based. Just as eating, one must eat for oneself; one person cannot eat for another.
Statistical analysis of individual cases belongs to statistics, unrelated to specific treatment, and cannot change the nature of treating individual cases. Statistics itself is not treatment, but one cannot claim that treatment without statistics is not treatment.
As for so-called drug experimental treatments conducted on groups with uniform medication regardless of specific conditions after strict statistical validation, their essence is merely experimentation, not treatment.
Modern medicine continues to use patients as test subjects for drug experiments to this day. This is undoubtedly the sorrow of modern medicine and, more tragically, the tragedy of countless innocent patients!
Two Types of Fever Reduction
Fever is like a battle between Righteous Qi (Zheng Qi) and Evil Qi (Xie Qi). If Righteous Qi wins, the fever naturally subsides, like the liberation on August 15th. If Evil Qi wins, the fever also subsides, like the September 18th Incident. "Fever reduction" that releases Evil and attacks Righteous Qi is akin to the traitorous act of ceding territory and paying indemnities, fundamentally different from the peace achieved through victory in the War of Resistance. Can the peace of Manchukuo be compared to the peace after the founding of the nation? Have you not seen continuous coughing and wheezing after anti-inflammatory fever reduction, even progressing to severe internal organ disease? The gunfire stops, but the nation perishes! Another type of fever sees temperature rise with continued anti-inflammatories, persisting long-term. This indicates Evil Qi has been driven by attacking medicines into the Three Yin Meridians or penetrated the marrow, with Primordial Yang escaping outward and failing to return. The so-called unknown etiology of Western hematological diseases is actually created by their long-term use of anti-inflammatory drugs. They pride themselves on reducing fever, unaware that their so-called fever reduction is mostly an act of assisting tyrants to suppress resistance! The most barbaric fever reduction is cooling with ice packs, after which patients often die. This is like the Nanjing Massacre; the biting cold will be eternal pain implanted in the souls of the dead!
Understanding Double-Blind Trials
Failure to recognize facts only indicates limitations in cognition, not that facts fail to conform to cognition. Common sense in TCM appears incredible to Western medicine, reflecting the limitations and shortsightedness of Western cognitive methods. Facts must be used to correct limited, erroneous cognition, not limited cognition to deny facts. This is a simple principle; failing to grasp it indicates a deviation in logical connection.
The word "blind" in double-blind drug trials is apt. Indeed, Western clinical practice is, as they describe it, blind experimentation. This unavoidable limitation stems from inherent defects in their theory. With correct theoretical guidance, treatment would be practice, not experiment. Just as eating is done to avoid hunger, not to test whether one gets hungry after eating, experience and common sense do not require experimental proof.
Method and Purpose
Science is a method; methods serve purposes. Methods that fail to achieve purposes are ineffective. The standard for measuring a method's value is its effectiveness (i.e., results), not conformity to methodological standards. Scientific methods lacking problem-solving efficacy hold no value. Science is only valuable for problems it can solve. All methods are equal; science holds no privilege before problems. Science cannot solve all problems; this fact does not change due to the subjective fantasies of science superstitious believers. Privileges granted by superstition are only effective for the superstitious believer's faith, not for solving problems. The fact that TCM can solve disease problems under its own methodology and epistemology demonstrates TCM's efficacy and proves the value of its epistemology and methodology. Subjective fantasies detached from reality cannot participate in such discussions, determined by their subjective stance, despite their efforts to appear engaged in text.
