Etiology: This condition arises from constitutional deficiency combined with the invasion of heat pathogens. The heat damages the blood, causing it to enter the intestines, thereby forming bloody dysentery (Xue Li). If the heat does not subside and the Stomach Qi remains deficient without recovering, prolonged bleeding in the stool will fail to heal, often transforming into vomiting, hiccuping, and dampness obstruction. (From Volume XVII)
Cui Shi's prescription for treating bloody dysentery persisting for decades.
Duan Shi (Calcined Iron Ore), 3 large sheng, stir-fried until yellow.
Take the above single herb, mix with one dou of water, stir, and allow to settle until clear. Take one sheng per dose, three doses to stop the bleeding. (From Volume III)
"Short Records" prescription for treating lower bleeding that has persisted for years without cure.
Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), half jin.
Pulverize the above single herb. Mix with the white of an egg to form cakes. Roast over a mild fire until yellowish-black. Pulverize again and sieve. Take one fang cun bi (a square-inch measure) per dose, three times daily. It is effective; for cases involving passage of clear blood, sallow complexion, and loss of luster which physicians cannot treat, all will recover. (Same as "Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang")
Wen Zhong's prescription for elderly patients aged seventy or eighty suffering from persistent accumulated dysentery and inability to eat.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), four fen; Lu Jiao (Deer Horn), remove skin, take the white part, pulverize, and stir-fry until yellow.
Pulverize and sieve the above two herbs to make a powder. In the morning, take one fang cun bi with rice broth, twice daily. (Both from Volume III)
Etiology: This results from the imbalance of cold and heat throughout the seasons, leading to the invasion of damp-toxic qi. Following the meridians and blood-qii flow, it gradually reaches the zang-fu organs. When the Large Intestine is deficient, toxic qi takes advantage of this weakness. The toxic qi, carrying heat, contends with the blood, resulting in bloody dysentery. As the toxic qi invades and damages the zang-fu, the condition resembles Gu Zhu (Gu poisoning/parasitic disease). The dysenteric stool contains blood mixed with pus, stasis, and black matter; some pieces resemble chicken liver, passing down mixed with blood. (From Volume XVII)
"Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang" prescription for treating lower bleeding caused by seasonal Gu Zhu toxicity.
Fan Shi (Alumen), roasted, two liang; Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger); Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root); Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), each two liang.
Pulverize and sieve the above four herbs to make a powder. Take one fang cun bi with wine, three times daily. If symptoms do not cease, continue administration.
Another prescription
Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma); Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), equal parts.
Pulverize the above two herbs. Form pills using honey, sized like wutong seeds. Take ten pills with warm water, four times daily. (Both from Volume II)
