According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases), when Yin and Yang energies are cut off from each other, pathogenic factors invade the collaterals of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Toxic heat steams upward and attacks the throat and pharynx, causing pain or the formation of sores. (From Volume IX)
*Shen Shi Fang* (The Deep Master's Formulas) treats epidemic toxic diseases characterized by persistent diarrhea and sore throat. The Huanglian Matong Decoction (Coptis and Horse Dung Juice Decoction) formula is as follows:
Adzuki Beans (1 sheng) Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 1 liang, remove hairs) Matong Juice (juice extracted from horse dung, 3 sheng) Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 1 liang)
Take the above four ingredients, decoct them in Matong Juice until one sheng remains, and take it all at once. If not cured, prepare and administer again; it will be effective. Avoid pork and cold water. (From Volume XIV)
*Gu Jin Lu Yan* (Recorded Experiences from Ancient and Modern Times) Qingmuxiang Decoction (Aucklandia Decoction) treats sudden onset of sore throat with swelling during spring and summer, accompanied by dysentery.
Aucklandiae Radix (Qingmuxiang, 2 liang) Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 1 liang, remove hairs) Pulsatillae Radix (Baitouweng, 2 liang)
Cut the above three ingredients, add five sheng of water, and decoct until one and a half sheng remains. Divide into three warm doses. For children, administer one he per dose. Avoid pork and cold water. (From Volume III)
*Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states that epistaxis due to epidemic pathogens results from the accumulation of heat in the five zang organs. The Heart governs blood; when pathogenic heat invades the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and lodges in the collaterals of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, epistaxis occurs. "Nu" refers to bleeding from the nose. (From Volume IX)
*Shen Shi Fang* provides a formula for treating epidemic toxic disease where epistaxis is caused by heat toxicity, with blood loss amounting to several sheng.
Such cases may resolve spontaneously without treatment, causing no other distress. Alternatively, take high-quality pine-soot ink, grind it, and mix with egg white to form pills the size of sophora seeds. Swallow ten pills with water. There are no dietary restrictions.
Another formula, Huangtu Tang (Yellow Earth Decoction), treats epistaxis caused by the accumulation of heat in the five zang organs, or hematemesis.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, roasted) Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao) Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) (each 3 liang) Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 1 liang) Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdihuang, 1 jin) Fudi Tu (Ash from the bottom of the cooking pot, equivalent to the size of an egg, wrapped in silk) Bambusae Caulis Internodium (Qingzhupi, 5 liang)
Cut the above nine ingredients, add thirteen dou and three sheng of water. First decoct the bamboo skin until the volume reduces by three sheng, then strain out the dregs. Add the remaining herbs and decoct until three sheng remain. Divide into four doses. Avoid seaweed, Chinese cabbage, and raw green onions.
Another prescription:
Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 4 liang)
Cut this single ingredient, add five sheng of water, and decoct until two sheng remain. Divide into three doses. This formula also treats metrorrhagia (continuous vaginal bleeding) in women.
Another prescription for treating pulse floating and large, dryness in the nasal cavity, which inevitably leads to epistaxis:
Moxibustion on the vessels in the middle of both arms can stop the bleeding. To locate the acupoint on the arm vessel: use your nose to sniff the arm; the point where the tip of your nose touches is the acupoint. Apply this method to both arms. (From Volume XIV)
