The *Guangji Fang* treats infantile convulsive epilepsy in children who are emaciated and too weak to tolerate standard treatments, utilizing a decoction formula for the "mother-and-son five epilepsies."
*Gouteng* (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, 2 fen) *Zhimu* (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), *Ziqin* (Scutellariae Radix) (each 4 fen); *Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, processed with honey), *Shengma* (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), *Shashen* (Adenophorae Radix) (each 3 fen); *Hanshuishi* (Natrii Sulfas, 6 fen).
*Zachan* (Tettigidae Periostracum, one piece, wings removed, processed by dry roasting); *Qianglang* (Staphylinus, three pieces, processed by dry roasting).
Crush and sieve the above nine ingredients. Mix well with fine honey and thin rice water. Place in a copper bowl and simmer over boiling water, stirring constantly without stopping, until it reaches the consistency of maltose syrup. Set aside a small portion separately.
The *Duanju* cites the *Xuanzhong Ji*, stating: There is a female bird under heaven named Guhuo, also known as Diaoxing Gui. It likes to fly and cry during rainy nights, lingering in villages, transforming into...
Qianjin Fang considers epilepsy an evil disease of infants. Some may become critically ill due to delayed medical attention. However, since the pathogenic qi originates internally, there must be prior signs; one should carefully examine them...
Also, (dryness of the nose and mouth, and difficulty in urination and defecation are signs of epilepsy); also, (blurred vision, upward gaze, and preference for sunlight are signs of epilepsy); also, (prominent blue collaterals behind the ear at the Wanggu point, restlessness while lying down are signs of epilepsy; if the pulse is blue and large, prick to let blood out); also, (hair standing on end, crying, dark complexion but unchanged skin color are signs of epilepsy); also, (appearance of blueness around the nose and mouth with slight fright are signs of epilepsy); also, (qi sinking downward and irrational anger are signs of epilepsy); also, (fever and difficult urination are signs of epilepsy); also, (persistent vomiting and diarrhea, intermittent cold limbs and pain are signs of epilepsy); also, (fever and frequent staring straight ahead are signs of epilepsy); also, (closed eyelids, blueness around the nose and mouth with slight fright are signs of epilepsy); also, (difficulty in suckling is a sign of epilepsy); also, (fever and frequent sweating on the head are signs of epilepsy); also, (sudden enlargement and darkening of the pupils compared to normal are signs of epilepsy); also, (fever, vomiting, and wheezing are signs of epilepsy); also, (frequent yawning and upward gaze are signs of epilepsy); also, (restless sleep, fright, and trembling/shaking of hands and feet are signs of epilepsy); also, (fever and unfocused gaze are signs of epilepsy); also, (smiling in sleep and shaking of hands and feet are signs of epilepsy); also, (playing with the tongue and shaking the head are signs of epilepsy).
The above twenty signs all represent the initial stage of epilepsy. Upon observing these signs, moxibustion should be applied to the corresponding Yang meridians. Apply heavy-handed moxibustion to induce sudden crying in the child, and for cases where the foot pulse ceases, administer the decoction according to the formula. Also, (staring straight, moving pupils, abdominal distension, borborygmus, bloody stool, fever, trismus preventing suckling, opisthotonos, stiff spine, sweating).
Also, for infantile frightful crying with limb twitching during sleep, before the completion of the "bianzheng" (physiological transformation period), moxibustion and acupuncture must strictly be avoided. Disturbing the hundred vessels may still lead to epilepsy caused by fright. Only in cases of Yin epilepsy with trismus can moxibustion and acupuncture be used. Generally, when treating epilepsy with moxibustion, one must first ensure the child has evacuated bowels to empty the interior, then apply moxibustion while the body is in a deficient state. If moxibustion is applied while excess pathogens remain un-evacuated, it will cause Qi stagnation blocking both upper and lower orifices, leading to death.
Epilepsy occurring at dawn is located in the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian; at dusk, in the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian; at noon, in the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian; at midnight, in the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian; at nightfall, in the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian; at morning, in the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian.
Regarding the timing of epilepsy onset and its location, observe whether it occurs early or late, and apply moxibustion to the corresponding meridian points.
For the five Zang organ epilepsies and the six animal-type epilepsies, whether located in the four limbs or inside the abdomen, carefully examine the signs and apply moxibustion according to the disease location. Even mild cases will surely recover; however, missing the key principles will cause harm.
Liver epilepsy manifests as a greenish complexion, eyes rolling back, and shaking of hands and feet. (Apply moxibustion to the Foot Yangming and Foot Taiyin meridians, 3 moxa cones each).
Heart epilepsy manifests as a red complexion, heat sensation below the heart, shortness of breath with weak and rapid respiration. (Apply moxibustion to the depression at the second rib end below the heart, which is Juque [CV14]; also apply moxibustion to the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian and Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian, 3 moxa cones each).
Spleen epilepsy manifests as a yellow complexion, abdominal distension, and diarrhea/dysentery. (Apply moxibustion to the epigastrium, 3 moxa cones; 2 moxa cones on each side of the epigastrium; 2 moxa cones each on the Foot Yangming and Foot Taiyin meridians).
Lung epilepsy manifests as a pale face and eyes, and foaming at the mouth. (Apply moxibustion to Ganshu [BL18], 2 moxa cones; also apply moxibustion to the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian, 2 moxa cones).
Kidney epilepsy manifests as a black complexion, eyes staring straight without movement, resembling a corpse. (Apply moxibustion 2 cun below the heart, 3 moxa cones; also apply moxibustion to the arterial pulse below the elbow, 2 moxa cones each).
Diaphragm epilepsy manifests as eyes rolling back and inability to lift the four limbs. (Apply moxibustion to Fengfu [GV16]; also apply moxibustion to the vertex, Renzhong [GV26], and Chengjiang [CV24] on the lower lip, with the number of cones determined by age).
Intestinal epilepsy manifests with no body movement. (Apply moxibustion to both Chengshan [BL57]; also apply moxibustion to Yongquan [KI1] on the sole of the foot, Laogong [PC8] on both hands, and Wanggu [GB12] behind both ears, with the number of cones determined by age; also apply moxibustion to the umbilicus, up to 50 cones).
