The "Pig Stomach Boiling Stone Method" recorded in *Qianjin Yifang*: For those under forty years of age, take two *da liang* (large units of weight); for those aged forty-five to fifty, and up to sixty or above, add two *liang*, as a routine usage.
For those taking this medicine after the fourth month, because the nature of quartz is heavy, after taking it for two months, if the power of the stone manifests, it will connect with the autumn climate, causing the stone's power to sink into the viscera, benefiting the waist and kidneys, ultimately without the reason for developing [stone disease].
White Quartz (two *da liang*, ground into powder, heavily wrapped in a raw silk bag, mouth sewn shut) Powdered Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, sliced) Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, finely cut, each three *da liang*) Seven stalks of Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, finely cut) Chi Dou (Fermented Soybean, one *chao*) Jiao (Sichuan Pepper, forty-nine seeds, removing eyes and closed-mouth ones) Lamb meat (half *jin*, finely cut) One pig stomach (cleaned according to food preparation methods) Xin Jing Mi (Oryza Sativa Var. Glutinosa, one *ge*), mixed with the aforementioned medicines and the quartz bag, placed inside the pig stomach, tightly bound at the mouth to prevent any leakage of qi and water.
The above ten ingredients are boiled in two *dou* of water until reduced to eight *sheng*, then stopped. Remove the medicine and pig stomach, place on a plate to cool, then break open. If broken while hot, the juice may flow out. First remove the stone bag. Take the juice from boiling the pig stomach to make a soup/congee to consume. Take this three times a year. The White Quartz remains the same for each dose, while the other medicines are replaced. The dosage strictly follows the initial method. Each dose should be taken with an interval of one or two days. Do not eat wood ear mushrooms or bamboo shoots.
Another method: Feeding quartz to cows to obtain milk for consumption.
White Quartz (three *da jin*, select good quality, superior grade is also acceptable).
The above single ingredient is crushed, sifted, and finely ground over three days. After grinding, select a cow that is over ten years old and nursing a calf; it is best if the cow is quite thin. Weigh out one *da liang* of stone powder daily, mix it with chopped beans, and feed it to the cow. After seven days, milk can be obtained. Every morning, drink one *sheng* warm on an empty stomach. The remainder can be used to make congee. Eat freely with no restrictions. It is best to start taking it in early May, but if urgent, do not wait for the season. There will be no disease development. Use cow dung to fertilize the land. Plant vegetables as desired for the person consuming the milk to eat.
Another method: Soaking White Quartz and Ci Shi (Magnetite) in wine for consumption.
White Quartz (five *da liang*, superior quality from Zezhou) Ci Shi (Magnetite, five *liang, remove hair and impurities; ten *liang* of those that attract needles is also acceptable). Crush both substances separately. Wrap each in a double-layered thick silk bag.
Place the above two ingredients in one *dou* of good wine in a non-leaking vessel. Suspend the medicine bags to soak. After five or six days, drink three to two *zhan* (cups) daily. Maintain a slight alcohol sensation in the body. If wishing to add Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Sheng Di Huang, Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), etc., adjust according to the patient's cold/heat constitution and specific ailments, adding available herbs accordingly. Observe contraindications for added herbs; otherwise, there are no restrictions. After one year, hair and beard will turn black, and lower back pain and deafness will completely heal. After three or four days, gradually add one or two *sheng* of wine to keep the bottle full. Replace added herbal medicines when their efficacy is suspected to be exhausted. After three or four months, if the stone's power is suspected to have slightly weakened, remove, crush again, and re-bag. Discard after half a year, and prepare anew following the previous method.
Regarding foods to avoid after taking stone medicines, there are items that are forbidden, items that are permissible but unbeneficial, and items that are beneficial to humans and facilitate the action of stone medicines. Ten categories of medicinal vegetables are listed below.
Forbidden foods: Oils and fats (slippery to the intestines, causing loss of appetite; even if eaten, do not fry or roast) Yuan Yi (Canarium album resin, promotes sores and emits stone qi) Ji Cai (Shepherd's Purse, said to trigger stone qi or damage stone efficacy) Jie Zi (Mustard Seed) and Jie Cai (Mustard Greens, all promote drug heat) Man Qing Cai (Purslane, promotes qi and damages stone efficacy) Kui Cai (Mallow, slippery and obstructive, also forbidden). Generally, it is best not to eat forbidden foods.
If one wishes to eat them, they must be processed/refined, mixed with Cong Bai and Jiao. However, only Su (Perilla Leaf/Stem) is universally permissible. (It moistens the abdomen and helps circulate stone qi).
Dong Gua (Winter Melon) and Long Kui (Solanum nigrum) (These two strongly suppress stone qi; excessive consumption is bad). Man Jing (Turnip/Radish) (Can be eaten in small amounts only when made into yellow pickles with meat congee, must be mixed with pepper and scallions). Kui Cai (Mallow) (Do not eat on an empty stomach as it causes dryness and astringency in the abdomen/stomach; take three to five leaves and eat with meat in one meal).
Zhang Wenzhong discusses the essentials of taking stone medicines, stating one must violate normal human habits. There are Five Disadvantages (Wu Guai), Seven Urgencies (Qi Ji), Eight Don'ts (Ba Bu Ke), plus discussions on unexpected reactions and twenty-three additional points.
Five Disadvantages (Wu Guai):
1. Wearing heavy clothes leads to more cold is the first disadvantage (Ordinary people feel warm in cold clothes; those taking stones should wear light clothes. Heavy clothes cause more cold. As the Classics say, extreme heat generates cold. Hence, the first disadvantage.)
2. Hunger generates foul odor is the second disadvantage (Ordinary people produce undigested food odor when digestion fails. Those taking stones who endure hunger lose food intake, generating undigested food odor, different from ordinary people. Hence, the second disadvantage.)
3. Extreme fatigue requires self-exertion is the third disadvantage (Ordinary people need rest when extremely fatigued. Those taking stones who sit or lie down too long become fatigued; they must exert themselves to disperse the stone qi, achieving comfort. Hence, the third disadvantage.)
4. Warmth causes diarrhea is the fourth disadvantage (Ordinary people get diarrhea from cold and recover with warmth. Those taking stones get diarrhea with warmth and improve with cold. Hence, the fourth disadvantage.)
5. Desire for cold food/drink is the fifth disadvantage (Ordinary people harmonize internal organs with warm food. Those taking stones require cold food/drink for stability. Hence, the fifth disadvantage. *Qianjin Yifang* calls this "Six Reversals," mentioning swelling/sores/washing water as reversals, similar here, but only five are named "Five Disadvantages.")
Seven Urgencies (Qi Ji):
1. Bathing without delay is the first urgency (If feeling body warmth/pain, joint stiffness, slight fever, or mental confusion, must bathe. If initially cold, use cold water then raw/cooked warm water. If initially hot, use warm water then cold water. After bathing, pour two to three *sheng* of cold water over the head. Hence, the first urgency.)
2. Eating without starvation is the second urgency (Eat when needed, do not endure hunger. Hence, the second urgency.)
3. Wine must be pure, clear, and warm is the third urgency (Drink regardless of season, amount according to desire, preferably warm. Hence, the third urgency.)
4. Removing clothes when warm is the fourth urgency
5. Food must be extremely cold is the fifth urgency
6. Sleeping on a thin mat is the sixth urgency
7. Food quantity should not be a concern (eat much) is the seventh urgency
Eight Don'ts (Ba Bu Ke):
1. Seeking fire in winter cold is the first don't
2. Desiring hot food/drink is the second don't
3. Doubting oneself during rashes is the third don't (When taking stones, always monitor and regulate. If feeling slight discomfort, rest according to rules, do not harbor doubts.)
4. Fearing wind and dampness is the fourth don't (If feeling head wind-heat, stuffiness, or irritability, use a pillow and wash hands/face with water. This is better than ordinary wind-damp treatments.)
5. Not wanting to walk when extremely fatigued is the fifth don't (If sitting/lying too long causes fatigue, must walk and exert oneself.)
6. Fearing large food quantities is the sixth don't
7. Desiring thick/luxurious bedding is the seventh don't
8. Following desires blindly is the eighth don't (Do not follow desires blindly; achieve the optimal regulation of stone nature and recuperation.)
Whenever stone medicine activates, bathing is suitable; bathing resolves it. If not cured after bathing, other therapies may be used. If bathing does not cure, follow the subsequent instructions to take decoctions such as Cong Bai (Scallion) and Ma Huang (Ephedra). See the new appendix of "Portable Emergency Medicines."
Zi Xue (Purple Snow) Jin Shi Ling (Identity unknown) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) Wei Rui (Polygonatum Odorati Rhizoma) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) Gou Bai Fen (Dog White Excrement) Mang Xiao (Mirabilite) Po Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, double dose) Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) Xiang Chi (Fermented Soybean) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu - note: modern substitutes usually used) Hu Dou (Faba Bean) Lu Feng Fang (Vespa Nest) Bai Ya Tong (White Duck Droppings) Da Mai Nu (Hordei Fructus Germinatus)
The above medicines are all essential for treating "Ru Shi" (Stone Disease from mineral ingestion). Zhongsi now selects them with famous physicians for portable emergency use.
Methods of Cold Food Diet: Taking these requires understanding regulations. Understanding regulations cures disease; losing regulations causes disease. Foolish people should not force it; forcing it leads to bodily harm. Wise people carefully analyze the methods.
