[Four Short Prescriptions]
Prescription 1: Decree Sweating Baiwei Powder (Baiwei San), a formula for treating Cold Damage (Shanghan) that has not resolved after two days.
Baiwei (Radix Cynanchi Atrati, 2 liang) Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 7 fen, nodes removed) Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, skin and tips removed, stir-fried) Beimu (Flos Fritillariae Cirrhosae, each 3 fen).
The above four herbs are pounded into powder. Take one cun bi (a square-inch measure) with wine. Cover thickly and lie down; recovery occurs upon sweating. (Identical records in *Gujin Luyan* and *Qianjin Fang*).
Prescription 2: Chicken Egg Soup (Jizi Tang), a formula for treating persistent headache and muscle heat (Rou Re) two to three days after sweating therapy.
Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 1 liang, nodes removed) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 1 fen, honey-fried).
The above two herbs are cut. Add 2 sheng of water, add egg white (Albumen Ovi Galli) to immerse in the water, mix evenly, then add the herbs and stir again to ensure uniformity. Boil over fire without stirring until reduced to 1 sheng. Drink at a suitable warm temperature in one dose. Cover to induce sweating and apply talcum powder afterwards. This method is effective. Avoid consuming Algae (Haizao) and Songcai (Brassica vegetables). (Identical records in *Gujin Luyan* and *Beiji Qianjin*, Zhang Wenzhong used this for epidemic febrile diseases).
Prescription 3: Gegen Tang, a formula for treating Cold Damage (Shanghan) persisting for three to four days with unresolved body heat toxicity.
Gegen (Radix Puerariae Lobatae, 8 liang) Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 3 liang) Longdan (Radix Gentianae, half liang) Daqing (Folium Isatidis, half liang) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, half liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, half liang) Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, nodes removed, 2 liang).
The above twelve herbs are cut. Add 1 dou of water. First decoct Gegen and Mahuang to obtain 8 sheng, skim off the foam, then add the remaining herbs and decoct to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses: twice during the day and once at night. Avoid consuming Algae (Haizao), Songcai (Brassica vegetables), and raw Scallion (Congbai). (Same name as Gegen Longdan Tang in *Qianjin Fang*).
Prescription 4: For treating Cold Damage (Shanghan) lasting six or seven days, where the patient has undergone severe purgation, resulting in deep and slow pulse at the Cun position, cold limbs (Jue Ni), absent pulse at the lower positions, painful and obstructed throat, spitting of pus and blood, and unceasing diarrhea. Use Mahuang Shengma Tang.
Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 2.5 liang, nodes removed) Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, 3 fen) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 5 fen) Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, 3 fen) Weirui (Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati, sometimes recorded as Changpu/Acorus Tatarinowii) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 3 fen) Ling (Poria, 1 liang) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1 liang).
The above fourteen herbs are cut. Add 1 dou of water. First decoct Mahuang to reduce by 2 sheng, skim off the foam, then add all other herbs and decoct to obtain 3 sheng. Strain the dregs. Take warm, divided into three doses. The interval between doses should be approximately the time it takes to cook 3 dou of rice. Finish within this timeframe; recovery occurs upon sweating. Avoid consuming Algae (Haizao), Songcai (Brassica vegetables), raw Scallion (Congbai), vinegar, plums, peaches, and sparrow meat. (All from Volume 6. This is a prescription from Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun*. Note that *Qianjin Fang* records Mahuang, Zhimu, Weirui, and Huangqin as 3 liang each, and the remaining ten herbs as 2 liang each, which is the difference. Users should refer to *Shanghan Lun* as the standard).
