Etiology: The ear is the gathering point of numerous meridians and the organ through which Kidney Qi communicates. The Foot-Shaoyin Meridian is the meridian of the Kidney. If labor and fatigue damage the Blood and Qi, Heat pathogens may enter the meridian by taking advantage of this deficiency. The pathogenic factors follow the Blood and Qi to reach the ear; when Heat gathers, it generates pus and fluid, hence it is termed "ear [suppuration]" (referring to suppurative diseases of the ear). (From Volume 29)
*Guangji Fang* treats itching in the ears with continuous discharge of pus using *Changpu Gao* (Acorus Paste):
*Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma* (1 liang), *Polygalae Radix* (Yelangdu), *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata* (Pao), *Magnetitum* (burned), *Alumen* (boiled until liquid evaporates, each 1 liang).
The above five herbs are pounded and sifted, then mixed with sheep medulla (sheep tail fat) to form a paste. Take an amount the size of a jujube pit, insert into the ear, and continue until cured.
Another formula for treating discharge of pus and blood from the ear:
Take grease from the axle hub, wrap it in cotton, and insert into the ear until cured. (Same as *Zhouhou Fang*; *Qianjin Fang* also has methods for insects entering the ear.)
Another formula for treating ear diseases:
*Coptidis Rhizoma*, *Os Draconis*, *Ampelopsis Radix*, *Kaolinitum*, *Sepiae Endoconcha* (equal parts).
The above five herbs are pounded into powder, wrapped in cotton, and inserted into the ear. Before applying medication each time, wipe clean with a cotton-wrapped stick, then apply the medicine.
*Zhouhou Fang* treats ear diseases characterized by pain in the ear and discharge of pus and blood:
Collect soot from the bottom of a cauldron, blow it deep into the ear canal, changing it three times a day. Each time, remove the old soot with a comb-like tool before applying new medication, continuing until cured. (*Qianjin Fang* suggests using ash from the stove hearth applied thinly to the ear.)
Another formula:
Powder of *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata*, mixed with juice of Allium fistulosum (scallion juice), instilled into the ear until cured. Using scallion juice alone is also good. Lie on one side to allow the liquid to enter the ear. (From Middle Volume)
Another formula:
Cooked peach kernels, thoroughly pounded, wrapped in old crimson silk, and inserted into the ear. Change three times a day until cured. (Same as *Qianjin Fang*)
Another formula:
*Coptidis Rhizoma* and *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata* (Pao, equal parts).
The above two herbs are pounded into powder. Blow a small amount gently into the ear. Before each application, first wipe away any foul matter, then blow in the powder.
Another formula:
Soot powder from the bottom of a cauldron, mixed with suinum adipatum (pig fat), wrapped in cotton, and inserted into the ear. Twice daily.
*Jiyan Fang* treats discharge of pus and water from the ears using a powder:
*Alumen*, *Sepiae Endoconcha*, *Coptidis Rhizoma*, *Os Draconis*.
The above four herbs are pounded into powder. Take an amount the size of a jujube pit, wrap in cotton, and insert into the ear. Twice daily.
*Qianjin Fang* treats discharge of pus from the ear:
*Vitriolum Flavum* (Yellow Alum), *Sepiae Endoconcha*, *Coptidis Rhizoma*, *Kaolinitum* (each 1 liang).
The above four herbs are pounded into powder, wrapped in cotton to the size of a jujube pit, and inserted into the ear. Continue until cured. Twice daily. (*Yifang* uses *Os Draconis* instead of *Kaolinitum*, from Volume 6).
