[Background Information]
Book: *Waitai Miyao* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies)
Author: Wang Tao
Dynasty: Tang Dynasty, Tianbao 11th Year
Chapter: Ten Formulas for Gu Poison Hematemesis
Category: Formula
[English Translation]
Etiology: "Gu" is created by gathering various snakes and insects into a vessel, allowing them to devour each other until only one remains; this survivor is called "Gu." It harms humans by consuming their internal organs. The symptoms include severe pain in the heart region, as if being bitten by an object, or a bluish-yellow discoloration of the face and eyes, with unpredictable variations in pathology. If it first injures the area above the diaphragm, it causes hematemesis (vomiting blood); if not treated immediately, death ensues when the internal organs are completely consumed. (From Volume 25)
*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet) treats Gu poison where hematemesis or lower bleeding resembles rotten liver tissue.
*Qian Gen* (Radix Rubiae Millefolii), *He Gen* (Rhizoma Nelumbinis) (each 3 liang).
The above two herbs are cut into pieces, boiled in 4 sheng of water to reduce to 2 sheng. Strain and take all at once for immediate recovery. One will also come to know the name of the master who created the Gu. (Identical to *Qianjin Jianzhong*, *Cui Shi Wen*, *Wenzhong Beijifang*, *Gujin Luyuan*).
Another formula:
*Badou* (Seed Crotonis Tiglii, 1 seed, remove heart and skin, stir-fry), *Chi* (Folium Sojae Preparatum, 3 grains), *Fudi Mo* (Soot from the bottom of the cauldron, 1 fangcun bi).
The above three ingredients are pounded together and divided into three pills. Take one pill with warm water. Within a short time, the Gu poison should be expelled. If not expelled, take another pill. (Identical to *Duanju Fang*, *Bixiao Ji*, *Jiyan Fang*, *Wenzhong Beijifang*, *Fanwang Fang*, all from Volume 3).
Fan Wang's formula for treating Gu poison with hematemesis:
*Maifan* (Triticum aestivum flour, 2 sheng), stir-fried. Take with water until fully consumed. This should expel the Gu.
Another formula:
*Ku Hu* (Lagenaria siceraria var. bitter, 1 fruit). Boil in 2 sheng of water to obtain 1 sheng. Divide and take. This should cause vomiting up of the Gu, appearing like tadpoles of frogs/toads. If *Ku Hu* is toxic, use cautiously according to circumstances. (Identical to *Zhouhou Fang*, *Qianjin Fang*, *Duanju Fang*, *Wenzhong Beijifang*, *Gujin Luyuan*; *Qianjin Fang* notes *Ku Hu* 1 fen treats lower bleeding).
Another formula:
Fresh *Jiegeng* (Radix Platycodonis) is pounded to extract juice. Take 2-3 sheng, three times a day. *Niuxi* (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae) root is also acceptable. (All from Volume 14).
Wenzhong's formula for treating Gu poison with hematemesis:
*Lingyang Pi* (Cornu Saigae Tataricae, square piece 3 cun; aged drum skin is also good), *Kushen* (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis), *He Gen* (Rhizoma Nelumbinis, 3 liang), *Huanglian* (Rhizoma Coptidis, 2 liang), *Danggui* (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 2 liang).
The above five herbs are cut into pieces, boiled in 7 sheng of water to obtain 2 sheng. Divide into three doses. (*Beijifang* and *Jiyan Fang* share this formula but include *Ku Hu*).
Another formula:
Take the heartwood of mulberry wood, chop it to amount to 1 hu. Place in a cauldron and cover with water, ensuring the water level is 3 cun above the wood. Boil to obtain 2 dou. Clarify and take the clear liquid. Further simmer over low heat to reduce to 5 sheng. Fast overnight. In the morning, take 5 he. This will cause vomiting up of the Gu poison. (Identical to *Cui Shi Fang*, *Jiyan Fang*, *Gujin Luyuan*).
Another formula:
*Xionghuang* (Realgar, pulverized), *Fuyue Xia Huangtu* (Yellow earth from under the cauldron during the new moon), *Ta'an* (Liver of a wild dog/rabbit? Context implies animal part, roasted, size of a date), *Banmao* (Mylabris, 14 seeds, remove feet and wings, stir-fry).
The above four ingredients are pounded into powder. Take with whey/cheese liquid, divided into 3-4 doses. This will cause vomiting up of toads/frogs. (Identical to *Duanju Fang*; *Gujin Luyuan* adds *Dahuang* (Radix Rhei Palmati) size of a date, or vomiting up of toads, snakes, etc., otherwise same as Fan Wang's formula).
Cui Shi's formula for treating Gu poison with hematemesis:
*Xionghuang* (Realgar, pulverized), *Dansha* (Cinnabar, pulverized), *Lilu* (Radix Veratri Nigrī, roasted, each 1 liang).
The above three ingredients are pounded and sifted into a powder. In the morning, take 1 dao gui with *Jinghua Shui* (first drawn well water). This should expel the Gu poison. Avoid raw blood products and civet cat meat. (Identical to *Zhouhou Fang*, *Jiyan Fang*). Regarding Gu... [Text fragmentary].
*Duanju Fang* treats Gu poison causing heart pain and hematemesis nearing death:
Salt 1 sheng, pure vinegar (Ku Jiu) 1 sheng. Boil together until dissolved and mixed. Take once to immediately vomit up the Gu poison. Proven effective through prior use. (Identical to *Zhouhou Fang*, *Wenzhong Beijifang*, *Beijifang*, *Gujin Luyuan*, from Volume 4).
