The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states that generally, when people travel through mountains and rivers and are unfamiliar with the local water and soil conditions, humans or livestock may ingest something poisonous by mistake. If they do not know the antidotes beforehand, they often perish, which is indeed an unjust and sudden death. However, great sages have long established methods to save lives. It is merely because people desire life and favor medicines yet neglect to learn these methods; when poisoning occurs suddenly, they resign themselves to fate.
It further states that Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, Licorice Root) can detoxify all medicines. This is truly as effective as hot water melting snow, akin to divine miracle. If one is poisoned by Wutou (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, Prepared Lateral Root of Aconite) or Badou (Semen Crotonis, Croton Seed), Gancao entering the stomach will stabilize the toxicity. If poisoned by Lilu (Radix Veratri Nigri, Black White Hellebore Root), recovery follows swallowing Congtang (Scallion Decoction). If poisoned by Yege (Radix Gelsemii, Gelsemium Root), drinking Tujiang (Earth Slurry) stops the poison immediately. Such verifications are as clear as seeing one's palm in the hand. The key is for everyone to know these methods. Yet people refuse to learn them, which is truly sigh-worthy. Some prescriptions claim that Douda Zhi (Soybean Juice) can detoxify all medicines. I tested it myself and found the effect vastly inferior to Gancao. Furthermore, adding other ingredients to create Gandou Tang (Sweet Soybean Decoction) yields even more miraculous results. For instance, someone who took Yuhu Wan (Jade Pot Pill) suffered incessant vomiting, which various medicines could not stop, but Lan Zhi (Isatis Leaf Juice) stopped it upon entry into the mouth. Such cases must be known; these are established rules that need no further testing. There are many regulations in detoxification prescriptions; if a few examples are not pointed out, learners cannot grasp them abruptly. My other prescription examples follow this pattern.
Another prescription for treating various food poisonings:
Drinking Huanglong Tang (Yellow Dragon Decoction) and Xijiao Zhi (Rhinoceros Horn Juice) cures almost all cases. Drinking Ma Niao (Horse Urine) is also beneficial.
Another prescription for treating food and drink poisonings:
Kushen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis, Sophora Root) (3 liang)
Cut the single ingredient, boil in 2.5 sheng of wine until reduced to 1 sheng, and take it all at once to achieve cure.
*Gujin Luyan* (Recorded Experiences of Past and Present) prescription for treating various food toxins:
Take Sanghuangxin (Polyporus Umbellatus, Polyporus from Mulberry Tree), break it into a piece, place it in a cauldron, add water covering the herb by three cun, boil until reduced to 2 dou, filter and clarify, then simmer gently over low fire until 5 sheng remain. Take on an empty stomach after overnight fasting, 3 ge per day. It will induce vomiting of accumulated masses (jia). If not cured, prepare again. Reduce dosage for frail individuals.
*Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) prescription for treating sudden severe drunkenness fearing intestinal rot:
Prepare hot water in a large container for soaking. Replace with fresh hot water when it cools. The alcohol dissipates naturally. This is also excellent for summer use. (Same as *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*).
Another prescription:
Squeeze out Maogen Zhi (Rhizoma Imperatae Juice, Cogongrass Rhizome Juice) and drink 2 sheng.
Another prescription for treating throat ulceration and tongue sores caused by continuous months of alcohol consumption:
Dama Zi (Fructus Cannabis, Hemp Seed) (1 sheng) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, Skullcap Root) (2 liang)
Pulverize the two ingredients, mix with honey to form pills, and hold them in the mouth to dissolve.
