Xu Renze treated vomiting disease with two types: one is accumulation of heat in the Stomach, causing retching and inability to eat; the other is accumulation of cold in the Stomach, also causing retching and inability to eat. These two conditions are opposite in nature and must be carefully distinguished. If the cause is injury from improper regulation of diet, sleep, and living habits leading to heat, and there is no history of cold diseases, the person is young and strong with full flesh, this is accumulation of heat in the Stomach causing such retching. If the regulation of diet, sleep, and living habits did not involve heat, and there is a history of cold diseases, the person is old and weak with emaciated flesh, this is accumulation of cold in the Stomach causing such retching. If it is accumulation of cold, and retching has persisted for a long time, urgent rescue is required; otherwise, it may easily develop into Fan Wei Bing (Rebellious Stomach Disease, a condition characterized by regurgitation of food and phlegm).
For vomiting and retching due to accumulation of heat in the Stomach with inability to eat, Sheng Lugen Wuwei Yin (Raw Reed Root Five-Ingredient Decoction) is suitable. The prescription is as follows:
Sheng Lugen (Cut, 1 sheng), Sheng Maimendong (1 sheng, remove heart), Qing Zhuru (Green Bamboo Shavings, 1 sheng), Shengjiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, 5 he), Fuling (Poria, 5 liang).
The above herbs are cut, boiled in 8 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng, strained, then Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, 6 large he) is added and mixed well. Divide into three doses. Take the next dose after an interval equivalent to the time it takes a person to walk ten li. Avoid vinegar and acidic foods.
Furthermore, although taking the decoction made from the previous five ingredients including Sheng Lugen is effective, if it fails to completely eradicate the root cause, Fuling Wuwei Wan (Poria Five-Ingredient Pill) is suitable. The prescription is as follows:
Fuling (Poria, 5 liang), Renshen (Ginseng, 3 liang), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 1 sheng, remove heart), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 6 liang, shredded), Qing Zhuru (Green Bamboo Shavings, 1 sheng).
The above herbs are crushed and sifted, mixed with honey to form pills, and taken down with a decoction of Lugen. Start with 15 pills, twice daily, gradually increasing to 30 pills. The pills should be the size of Sophora seeds. Avoid vinegar and acidic foods.
Another case involves vomiting and retching due to accumulation of cold in the Stomach with inability to eat. Banxia Erwei Wan (Pinellia Two-Ingredient Pill) is suitable. The prescription is as follows:
Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome, 1 sheng, processed), Xiaomai Mian (Wheat Flour, 1 sheng).
Crush Banxia into powder, mix with water and wheat flour to form pills the size of bullet seeds. Boil in water until the flour is cooked, indicating the medicine is ready. Swallow 4-5 pills initially, twice daily, gradually increasing to 14-15 pills. Cook and take immediately. If symptoms improve upon taking this, continuing to take it is also good. Avoid mutton and maltose sugar. (Same for emergency use).
Furthermore, regarding the previous Banxia Erwei Wan, although symptoms gradually diminish, the root cause remains. If one wishes to take more of the previous pill but fears that potentially toxic drugs should not be taken for a long time; or if one does not wish to take medicine but fears the disease will spread, Ren Shen Qiwu Wan (Ginseng Seven-Ingredient Pill) is suitable. The prescription is as follows:
Renshen (Ginseng, 5 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 5 liang), Shengjiang Xie (Fresh Ginger Shreds, 8 liang), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, 4 liang, stir-fried), Xixin (Asarum, 4 liang), Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel, 3 liang), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 2 liang).
The above herbs are crushed and sifted into powder, mixed with honey to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take down with water. Start with 10 pills, twice daily, gradually increasing to 20 pills. It is also acceptable to alternate with the previous Banxia Wan. Avoid peaches, plums, sparrow meat, raw green onions, and raw vegetables. (Wu Sheng's formula is the same, both appearing in Volume I).
