Chapter: Eight Formulas for Wind-Water (Fengshui)
Category: Formulas
[Etiology]
Regarding the etiology of wind-water disease, it is caused by the deficiency of Kidney Qi and Spleen Qi. When the Kidneys are overworked, they become deficient; deficiency leads to sweating. If sweating occurs while exposed to wind, the wind pathogen enters internally and lodges in the Kidneys. The Spleen, being deficient, fails to control water metabolism, causing water to scatter and overflow into the skin. Furthermore, this condition involves an interaction with wind-dampness pathogens, hence it is termed "Wind-Water" (Fengshui). This disease causes bodily edema, resembling interior water retention diseases.
[Formula 2]
Shenshi's treatment for severe wind-water presenting with a floating pulse. A floating pulse indicates the pathology is at the exterior level. The patient may have sweating on the head, with no other exterior symptoms, but feels heaviness in the lower body. Thus, it is known that the area above the waist is relatively normal, while swelling and yin organ enlargement should occur below the waist, accompanied by difficulty in flexion and extension. Use Mugongji Decoction (Mufangji Tang).
Ingredients: Fresh Ginger (3 liang), Jujube (12 pieces, split), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu, 4 liang), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Mu Fang Ji, 4 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 2 liang, honey-fried), Astragali Radix (Huang Qi, 5 liang).
Cut the six ingredients. Decoct in 6 sheng of water until 2 sheng remains. Divide into three doses. For patients with wheezing, add Ephedrae Herba (Ma Huang); for those with heavy body sensation and stomach disharmony, add Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shao Yao); for those with qi rushing upward, add Cinnamomi Cortex (Gui Xin); for those with chronic cold in the lower jiao, add Asari Radix (Xi Xin). After taking Mufangji Huangqi Decoction, when the therapeutic effect manifests, one should feel as if insects are crawling under the skin, and the lower waist will feel cold as ice. After taking the decoction, sit on a quilt, and wrap another quilt around the waist to warm the lower body, inducing sweat. Recovery occurs upon sweating. Avoid consuming Algae (Haizao), Chinese Cabbage (Song Cai), Peaches, Plums, and Sparrow Meat. (This formula originally comes from Zhang Zhongjing's *Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases*).
[Formula 3]
Another formula treats wind-water qi, characterized by generalized edema and fullness, shortness of breath approaching suffocation. Use Soybean Decoction (Dadou Tang).
Ingredients: Soybean (Dadou, 1 sheng), Apricot Seed (Xing Ren, 1 sheng, remove tips and skins, stir-fry), Astragali Radix (Huang Qi, 2 liang), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng, 3 liang), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu, 5 liang), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Mu Fang Ji, 4 liang), Poria (Fu Ling, 4 liang), Ephedrae Herba (Ma Huang, 4 liang, remove joints), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 4 liang, honey-fried), Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang, 6 liang), Clear Wine (Qing Jiu, 1 sheng).
Cut the eleven ingredients. Decoct in 3 dou of water. First, boil the soybeans to obtain 1 dou of liquid, discard the dregs, then add the wine and remaining herbs. Decoct until 7 sheng remains. Divide into seven doses. Consume all within one day and night. The patient should experience bowel movement and very profuse urination. This is highly effective. Avoid strong vinegar; other dietary restrictions are the same as before.
[Formula 4]
Another formula treats sudden water retention, wind-water edema, or water toxicity from sores, resulting in generalized edema. Use Xiangru Shu Pill (Xiangru Zhu Wan).
Ingredients: Dry Moslae Herba (Gan Xiang Ru, 1 jin), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu, 7 liang).
Pulverize the Bai Zhu and sieve it. Boil the Gan Xiang Ru thickly to extract the juice. Mix the juice with the Bai Zhu powder to form pills. Take ten pills with warm water, four to five times a day. This effectively promotes urination. Using Xiang Ru flowers and leaves in summer is also beneficial. Avoid Green Fish; other restrictions are the same as before.
[Cui Shi's Formula]
Cui Shi's formula for wind-water edema where toxic qi spreads throughout the body.
Ingredients: Broussonetiae Cortex (Chu Bai Pi, 3 liang), Mulberry Root Bark (Sang Gen Bai Pi, 5 liang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Ju Pi, 1 liang), Perillae Folium (Zi Su, 4 liang), Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang, 4 liang), Soybean (Dadou, 3 sheng).
Cut the six ingredients. Decoct in 9 sheng of water until 1 sheng remains. Strain to remove dregs. Divide into four warm doses. Three courses of treatment are optimal. Avoid salty foods and vinegar for 100 days. (From Volume 6).
[Gujin Luyan's Formula]
Gujin Luyan treats wind-water with aversion to wind, generalized edema, floating pulse, no thirst, desire for spontaneous sweating, but without high fever. Use Yebi Decoction (Yuebi Tang).
Ingredients: Ephedrae Herba (Ma Huang, 6 liang, remove joints), Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang, 3 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 2 liang, honey-fried), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao, 0.5 jin, crushed), Jujube (Da Zao, 15 pieces, split).
Cut the five ingredients. Decoct in 6 sheng of water. First, boil Ma Huang until it boils again, skim off the foam, then add the other herbs. Decoct until 3 sheng remains. Divide into three doses. For aversion to wind, add one prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix (Fu Zi). For wind-water, add 4 liang of Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu). Administer as above. For cough and lung distension, add 5 he of Pinelliae Tuber (Ban Xia, washed). Start with 5 he per dose and increase gradually. Avoid Pork and Mutton; other restrictions are the same as before. (This formula originates from Zhang Zhongjing's *Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases*, which states that Interior Water is treated by Yuebi Jia Zhu Tang).
[Formula 6]
Another formula treats wind-water edema, mass accumulation (Zheng Xi), and alcohol-induced masses (Jiu Xi).
Ingredients: Phytolaccae Radix (Shang Lu Gen, 1 jin, thinly sliced).
Soak the single ingredient in 2 dou of pure wine for three nights. Take 1 sheng. It should induce bowel movement. If the effect is insufficient, increase the dose starting from half a sheng. Take three times a day until finished, then prepare a new batch. Reduce the dose for those who cannot tolerate alcohol. Avoid Dog Meat.
[Formula 7]
Another Gan Sui Pill treats wind-water and jaundice in humans, where the body swells like a sack, eyes and face are swollen shut, and the genitals swell like a bowl, resembling a frost melon.
Ingredients: Kansui Radix (Gan Sui, 2 liang, processed), Lepidii Fructus (Ting Li Zi, 2 liang, processed), Apricot Seed (Xing Ren, 50 pieces, processed), Crotonis Fructus (Ba Dou, 40 pieces, remove heart, skin, and process).
Pulverize the four ingredients. Mix with honey to form pills the size of soybeans. Take three pills per dose with water. Vomiting should occur. If there is no reaction, the dose can be increased to five pills. Avoid Wild Boar Meat and Reed Shoots.
[Formula 8]
Another Mahuang Tang treats wind-water, where the body and face are completely swollen, the lower back and hips pull and ache, and appetite is lost.
Ingredients: Ephedrae Herba (Ma Huang, 5 liang, remove joints), Cinnamomi Cortex (Gui Xin, 4 liang), Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang, 3 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 2 liang, honey-fried), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fu Zi, 2 pieces, prepared).
Cut the five ingredients. Decoct in 1 dou of water. First, boil Ma Huang until reduced by 2 sheng, then add the other herbs. Decoct until 3 sheng remains. Take 1 sheng per dose, three times a day. Dietary restrictions are the same as before.
