The etiology stems from wind-dampness toxic qi invading the Kidney Meridian. The Kidney governs water metabolism; now obstructed by pathogenic factors, the Kidney Qi fails to circulate and unblock water fluids, preventing them from descending to the Small Intestine. This causes water qi to stagnate and overflow into the Zang-Fu organs, infiltrating the skin, resulting in swelling and distension. (From Volume 13)
Wen Shen Tang (Warm the Kidney Decoction) from *Qian Jin Yi Fang* treats edema of the lower back, spine, knees, and feet accompanied by immobility.
Poria (Fu Ling), Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang), Alisma (Ze Xie) (each 2 liang); Cinnamon Twig (Gui Xin) (3 liang).
Cut the above four herbs. Boil in 6 sheng of water until reduced to 2 sheng. Divide into three doses. Avoid vinegar products and raw green onions. This formula also treats early-stage Hong Jiao Jiao (Podagra/Gouty Arthritis) starting from the foot and extending to the knee and shin, with bone pain.
One sheng of urine from a black ox per dose, taken twice daily. Discontinue when swelling subsides. For emaciated patients, mix two parts urine with one part cow's milk, boil until the milk coagulates, then consume.
Another prescription:
One fresh pig liver, finely chopped. Consume completely mixed with mild minced garlic. If not finished, divide into two meals. (Both from Volume 16)
Cui Shi's Formula for Generalized Edema in Hong Jiao Jiao.
Soybean (Da Dou) (2 large sheng, boiled in 1 dou of water to yield 5 sheng, discard beans); Mulberry Root Bark (Sang Bai Pi) (one handful, cut); Areca Nut (Bing Lang) (14 pieces, crushed); Poria (Fu Ling) (2 liang, cut).
Combine the first three items in the soybean decoction and soak overnight. Boil to obtain 2 sheng of liquid, strain, add 2 he of wine, and mix with the medicine. Take appropriate amounts based on condition. Avoid vinegar. (Same as emergency treatment)

Place the herbs in the bean decoction and boil to obtain 6 sheng. Take 1 sheng per dose, twice daily. Finish within three days.
Another prescription:
Black Soybean (Wu Dou) (5 sheng); Mulberry Root Bark (Sang Bai Pi) (cut 4 sheng, these two boiled in 2 dou of water to yield 1.5 dou, discard dregs); Hemp Seed Kernel (Da Ma Zi Ren) (1 sheng, roasted); Tangerine Peel (Ju Pi) (2 liang); Cimicifuga (Sheng Ma) (2 liang); Apricot Kernel (Xing Ren) (2 liang); Polyporus (Zhu Ling) (2 liang); Salvia Miltiorrhiza (Dan Shen) (3 liang); Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang) (2 liang, cut).

Dietary management is crucial; be cautious with cold, sour, slippery, five-spice, alcoholic, and noodle foods, as well as sticky and fatty foods. After four or five days, resume normal diet. Ancient texts state that Hong Jiao Jiao presents with swelling but no stifling sensation. Diuretic therapy induces thirst; even without diuretics, thirst may occur. A suitable diuretic formula is recommended.
Roast hemp seeds until fragrant, grind with water to obtain one large sheng of juice. Separately, boil one large sheng of Adzuki Bean (Chi Xiao Dou) in three large sheng of water to obtain one sheng of juice. Mix the hemp seed juice into the bean juice and boil for three to five boils. Drink when thirsty, temperature as preferred. It provides comfort.
