Source of Disease: The branch vessel of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian enters the teeth. Teeth are the termination of bones and are nourished by marrow. If wind-cold pathogenic factors lodge in the meridians and damage the bone marrow, cold qi entering will cause pain. For such conditions, decoctions, moxibustion/warming therapy (Tangxi), acupuncture, and stone needles have separate specific prescriptions. Tonifying, nourishing, and guiding exercises are attached below. The Guiding Method in the Health Preservation Formulas states: "Often towards one's destiny day..." (The original text has omissions here).
Guangji Fang (Extensive Useful Prescriptions) for treating toothache and complete loss of teeth. Shidan Fumigation/Topical Application Formula.
Take Shidan (Chalcocite/Copper Sulfate), grind it into powder, mix with human breast milk, and apply it to the painful tooth or insert it into the dental cavity. Apply two to three times daily. After the pain subsides, new teeth will grow; after one hundred days, they will return to normal. Once the teeth have grown, rinse thoroughly with fresh cool water each time.
Jiyan Fang (Collected Effective Prescriptions) for treating toothache.
Burn Ji Shi Bai (White excrement of chickens) into ash and powder. Wrap it in cotton cloth, place it on the painful tooth, and bite down on it. The disease will heal.
Another Prescription
Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Xixin (Asarum Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Fanshi (Alumen, calcined until juice is exhausted), Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Lilu (Veratrum Root), Mangcao (Daphne Genkwa Flower).
These seven medicinal materials are taken in equal parts, pounded and sifted into powder. Wrap a quantity the size of a pellet in cotton cloth, soak in wine, and apply warm compresses to the affected area. Hold in the mouth without swallowing the juice. (Same as Qianjin Fang).
Another Prescription
Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root), Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Bibai (Piper Longum Fruit) [each 2 liang], Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) [1 liang].
Cut these six medicinal materials, add five sheng of water, boil to obtain three sheng, remove the dregs. Gargle gently for a long time, spit out, and repeat.
Another Prescription
Hold Ma Bai Niao (White urine of horses) in the mouth, gargling according to the left or right side. It will heal within three to five swallows. (Same as Zhang Wenzhong's Beijiji Fang, both from Volume 6).
Zhang Wenzhong's prescription for treating toothache.
Burn Niuxi Gen (Achyranthes Bidentata Root) into powder, wrap in cotton cloth, place on the painful tooth, and hold in the mouth.
Another Prescription
Shujiao (Zanthoxyllum Bungeanum Pericarpium), Fanshi (Alumen) [each 1 liang].
Add one sheng of water to these two medicinal materials, decoct to obtain six he, remove the dregs. Hold in the mouth, gargle, and spit out; do not swallow.
Beiji Fang (Emergency Essentials) for treating toothache.
Husi Zi (Coriandrum Sativum Fruit) five sheng. It should be Coriandrum Sativum Fruit. Add five sheng of water, boil to obtain one sheng, hold in the mouth, and spit out. (Note: According to Bencao, Husi is also called Su, kills parasitic dampness, and seals ding swellings. This treatment for toothache is similar but likely not Husizi.)
Another Prescription
Ma Yeye (Unknown substance, possibly referring to a plant part or secretion) the size of a grain of rice. Wrap in cotton cloth and insert into the painful cavity to cut off the root of the disease. (General Note: Ma Yeye is unidentified).
Gujin Lu Yan Fang (Ancient and Modern Verified Prescriptions) for treating toothache.
Take the fine white bark of Yangliu (Salix Alba Twig/Bark), roll it to the thickness of a finger, hold and chew it, allowing the juice to soak the roots of the painful teeth. After several applications, it will heal.
Another Prescription
Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root) [3 liang], Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) [2 liang], Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) [2 liang], Bibai (Piper Longum Fruit) [2 liang], Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root) [2 liang], Gancao (Glycyrrhiza Uralensis Root) [2 liang], Xixin (Asarum Root) [2 liang], Jitexiang (Eugenia Caryophyllata Bud/Cardamom Seed - note: historically Jitexiang often referred to Clove or Cardamom, here likely Clove based on context] [1 liang].
Cut these eight medicinal materials, add five sheng of water, boil to obtain three sheng, remove the dregs. Hold in the mouth until healed. (Qianjin Fang does not contain Gancao).
