(Ji Chuanlianzi, i.e., Fructus Toosendan)
Steamed thoroughly after being mixed with wine, then the peel is removed. For pills, the seeds are pounded and used, while the flesh is not; for decoctions, the flesh is used, but not the seeds. Bitter and cold in nature, slightly toxic; those produced in Sichuan are superior, while locally produced ones are smaller. When burned to retain its character (Cunxing), it can expel pus and water, treating chronic ulcerated sores.
Taking the white flesh, slicing it and baking it, clears Liver fire, descends Qi of the Large and Small Intestines, and disperses evil blood.
Taking the white flesh inside the peel, sweet and warm in nature, non-toxic, treats blood stasis and tonifies damaged areas.
Disperses stagnant blood, stops various pains, and generates flesh.
Mixed with wine, sun-dried, and ground, it kills parasites, eliminates foul odor and distension, resolves toxicity from dead animal meat, and treats meat accumulation.
Ground into powder, soaked in water, boiled, clarified, dried after removing water, and added to plasters, it resolves distension and kills parasites.
Also known as Ruxiancao (Milky Grass), sweet and neutral in nature, non-toxic. Texts record it treating breast abscesses and nodules, but in reality, it has no efficacy. Charred until crisp to retain its character, taken with hot wine, it treats epigastric pain.
Bitter and neutral in nature, non-toxic, generates flesh, stops pain, and resolves Wild Langdu (Radix Stellerae) and insect toxins.
Clears heat and drains fire, drains bone-steaming fever, benefits joints, treats chancre (Yangmei Jiedu), and Spirit Holy Pill uses this herb decocted in water for adjustment.
Soaked in water for half a month, boiled in a pot several times, then soaked in hot water for several days, the peel and core are scraped off, and it is boiled in sesame oil until all foam is gone, then boiled for one hundred rolls until black and crisp throughout. It is scooped out with an iron wire sieve, immediately mixed with fine powder of roasted earth base from the same day, mixed until the earth powder has an oily smell, sifted through a coarse sieve to remove oily earth, then mixed with red-roasted earth powder for a period, and sieved again to remove earth. This process is repeated three times until the oil is completely removed. Then, it is stir-fried with Semen Momordicae (Mubiezi) and fine earth in a pot, placed in a basin, mixed and applied overnight. The Mubiezi is taken out, the earth is removed, and it is ground into powder for medicinal use. It possesses the unique efficacy of Semen Momordicae without any harm. It can search out wind-dampness penetrating bones and joints, and dispel phlegm-toxins congealed outside the skin and membranes. The extracted oil is reserved for use when preparing plasters.
For every jin (approx. 500g) of the herb, four liang (approx. 125g) of Gancao (Licorice Root) are used. Decocted in water and soaked for three days, the darkened liquid is discarded. The herb is washed with river water, using clear water for daily washing and soaking, changing the water several times a day. After three days, the core is removed, and it is washed again, soaked for four or five days. A pinch is taken and placed in a white porcelain basin, left overnight. If the water in the basin shows no discoloration the next day, it is considered proper. It is then washed three or four more times, drained, wrapped in dough like a ball, and baked in chaff fire until the dough is yellow on all sides and the internal herb is thoroughly cooked. It is taken out, sun-dried, stir-fried in a pot until thoroughly cooked, and ground into powder. Its bitter-cold toxicity is cleared through processing; it becomes sweet rather than bitter, and warm rather than cold. It specifically dissolves hard, knotted phlegm masses and toxic nodules.
